Join Hazel Butterfield for Get Booked LIVE SHOW, a vibrant celebration of books, authors, and the literary community. In this episode, Hazel dives deep into three compelling reads that showcase the diversity of contemporary fiction. She explores the family secrets and hidden truths in Deborah Stone’s What’s Left Unsaid, a multi-perspective novel that will keep you guessing until the very end. The intricate storytelling had Hazel hooked from page one, with moments that send shivers down your spine as the narrative pieces together in unexpected ways.
Next, Hazel discusses Louise Burfit-Donns’ The Missing Activist, a gripping political thriller with insider knowledge that feels disturbingly plausible. This novel tackles bullying, political intrigue, and the disappearance of a young Tory activist who dares to speak up. Louise’s nuanced portrayal of complex characters, including radicalized individuals and recruiters, brings depth and compassion to a murky world of political corruption. Hazel enthusiastically recommends both books as perfect contrasts to each other, and teases upcoming discussions about David Walliams’ latest releases, Lindsay Porter’s Whirlpools: Yoga and the Balance of Life, Michelle Obama’s Becoming, and Amanda Robson’s latest Times Bestseller.

Hi, I'm Hazel and this is Get Booked for Women's Radio Station. Throughout my shows we will talk about what I've read, what I'm reading, new releases, chat to authors, publishers, and book enthusiasts, all of you. If you like a book, get involved, get in touch. And I hope you enjoy hearing about the latest books I've read and loved. It's great to support those starting out in the publishing world, and What's Left Unsaid, The Missing Activist, and Whirlpool's Yoga and the Meaning of Life are great examples of incredible talent emerging into the literary world. Get involved and lose yourself in great books. They're just a few of the books we're going to be discussing today, and let's get stuck straight into this because there's so much I want to talk to you about. And first up today, we have What's Left Unsaid by Deborah Stone. Um, this book is just fantastic and it looks incredible. Go and check it out on my Instagram page, @getbookedwrs. Basically, when Sasha's son accidentally hears a disturbing slip of the tongue from his dementia-ridden grandmother, he embarks on a fact-finding mission through the guise of stating he wants to create a family video diary, as you do. It's kind of a memento for later years. This is the way he positions it. And the whole family uncover more than the lies they thought they had hidden in the cupboard, and kicking up a whole bunch of trouble and forcing some issues to come to the fore, such is the case in families, as I'm sure you know. We can't and often don't always know the truth or extent of someone's circumstances, nor do we see and experience the same life events similarly. We are entitled to our privacy, our secrets, but what is left unsaid can cause heartache and confusion. How many of you can agree? Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practise to deceive. I absolutely love that phrase and it is so apt for this book, What's Left Unsaid. I was hooked very quickly and I do like the different perspective format when telling a story, especially when you're going back in time when perspectives were governed by a different time and different struggles. You can find out more on my blog. Get yourself on Amazon or on Deborah's website, whatsleftunsaid.co.uk. There's so much information on there about the author, about how she came about this book, and it's hot. The cover's just brilliant. It's one of those ones you kind of want to stick on your coffee table. Very, very Instagrammable. Today I am just getting tongue-tied left, right, and center. Just wait until I move on to Lindsay Porter's book a little bit later. Yes, so that's my first review, What's Left The Unsaid. It is brilliant. It's one of those books where you really don't know what's going to happen, and there's a part in it when I just— my blood went cold. I was like, I think I know what's going to happen. And it just made you think, wow, this is all coming together in such a way. She's just— she wrote it brilliantly. I was absolutely thrilled by it. Go and get your teeth sunk into that one. And remember, you can send in your 1-minute book review clips. Record it clearly on your phone, on your— or on your iPad, and send it to us at presenters@womensradiostation.com. Or maybe, maybe you're just a huge book fan and you want to come in and just chat to me about books. I'm always up for chatting about books. As you can tell, I have my own book show. Right, next up, there is The Missing Activist Louise Burfit-Donns. I did actually get the chance to meet her recently. She's an incredible lady. I was hugely excited about getting stuck into this novel. I don't actually remember the last political thriller I read, but there's something quite intriguing about Louise being an ex-Tory candidate with a bit of an inside scoop on the topic and the topics that she covered. So right now, bullying and ISIS brides and just basically, I mean, politics, seriously, you could write a book a day and you'd still run out of topics. So basically, The Missing Activist is, it's about a Tory activist in the primary stages of his career. A little bit wet behind the ears, and he files a complaint regarding bad behaviour in the party, predominantly bullying, but, you know, behaviour where you just kind of go, "That's not okay," and he thought, being a very young, a young person within the party, he thought, "Oh, I want to rectify this. I want the best for this party." Oh dear, how wrong was he? Being a loyal supporter, he thought he was acting in the party's his best interests, and if only others saw it in the same way. He suddenly and mysteriously disappears after making his complaint official. A private investigator, Karen Anderson, is tasked, tasked with finding him, or at least finding out what happened to him and what on earth is quite disturbing. It is not just about the bullying, it is about who is involved and who wants to get involved and who's trying to cover up what lies and what they will do to cover up those lies. Who'd have thought that politics had a murky side, eh? Huh? Well, all of us, all of us really, but it's great to have such a detailed perspective and a bit of inside knowledge and protocol info, which is what Louise Beaufort-Dunn gives to us. She did actually do a bit of a library session in Chiswick recently with another author who we've had in here at Women's Radio Station, Amanda Robson, where quite a few of the authors got together and people could just sit in the audience and chat away and ask questions about publishing and just generally how they put their books together. Go and check out some of these library events. I think it's quite good to follow authors, just If you're a book fan, just getting to go and meet them up front and ask some questions, brilliant. The— back to The Missing Activist, the knowledge and perspective of the different characters and elements involved in this highly political fictional, and I'm kind of using air quotes right now, which is, I appreciate, is brilliant for radio, but this fictional thriller was brilliant. Louise definitely knows her stuff. The introspective nature she portrayed of the lead characters, especially the radicalized female brides and the recruiters— and there were seemingly more than one recruiter. Who is the recruiter and the recruitee? Helping to get involved with the narrative The compassion in Louisa's tone when she was taking on such characters, it really got under my skin because she really took them on board and it was just incredible. The ebb and the flow of the plot at times was quite sporadic, um, yet so informative. I think it was one of those books you need to read again and again to realize how much more was happening. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one. I'm pretty certain there's a couple more books to come from Louise Burfett Dunn. One's going to be less so of a political thriller, but another one's going to be a follow-on from The Missing Activist. And there's a little bit of murder in there. There's bullying, there's ISIS, and there is, do you know what, quite a lot of knowledge about the political arena as well, and it most definitely was not swaying in favour of one party or another. It was just full of information and the way that things kind of transpire within these political parties. So, really great read, actually. Quite a nice kind of contrast to What's Left Unsaid, so I hugely recommend these. Both those books. The Missing Activist, you can go and follow it on Twitter, it's @missingactivist, and the author again was Louise Berthoud-Donz. Also, if you're an author releasing a book or a book fan who's reading something incredible that you want to shout out about, or just you like a good old chinwag about books, get in touch and let's get you on the show. All of my book reviews also go up on Hazel juliebutterfield.com, and you can follow me on Twitter @nuttybutty. Find out what I'm going on about, and maybe you can send me your book, we can review it, and then get you on the show and chat about it. I love, I love the, the idea of being able to just get to know these authors and how they come up with these stories. It's just, just incredible. We have so many more books that we're going to be discussing in today's show. We will be discussing a little bit of David Walliams' latest release. And I think actually he's got another one coming out as well. He's just churning those ones out. We're also going to be talking about Lindsay Porter's Whirlpools, Yoga, and the Balance of Life. And we are gonna be talking about the incredible Becoming from Michelle Obama, which is incredible. And I managed to read another one of Amanda Robson's books. Now, you may recall that we had her in the studio, uh, a month or so back, and it was great to chat to her. So we're gonna be looking at one of her books, and she's releasing another one due to be released in the first week of April. Let's try and get her back in again. She is just pumping out all these incredible Times Best sellers. But right now we're going to go to a very quick break. Stick with me and I'll be back with Get Booked very shortly. I'm Hazel Butterfield and this is Get Booked for Women's Radio Station, a show all about books, authors, publishing, you name it. If you like books, this is the place to be. Make sure you check out Women's Radio Station's website for all the other incredible shows that we've got here supporting everything that women have to offer. We've just been discussing What's Left Unsaid and The Missing Activist here on Get Booked. And next on our list for today's show is, oh, a little bit of a crush of mine, David Walliams. Ah! Ice Monster. Yeah, me and my children, we are huge David Walliams fans. You name it, as soon as a book comes out, We get it. My eldest reads it before the night is even over. My youngest, he likes to get involved with it a little bit more. He likes me to read it with him and do all the different voices. But my other one, he's like, "Give me it first. I'm just gonna bat this one out of the park. I wanna read it. I wanna make sure I've read it before everybody else." He puts it up on his Instagram. Yeah, we all love Instagram. Make sure that you follow the GetBooked Instagram page, which is @getbookedwrs, and tag me into your book-related posts. Now, so Ice Monster was a recent release from David Walliams. He really is turning these out now, and the kids and adults just keep on loving them. And there's even another one, hasn't Thing just been released? I need to get my hands on that one. When I leave the studio today, I'm gonna get that one as well. Yes, I'm not allowed to delay with those ones. My eldest most definitely will have a go at me. It's great, you know, actually, because there are worse things for your kids to have a go at you for. "Mommy, buy me a book." Yeah, sure. No PlayStation for you. Ice Monster. Yeah, it all starts out with a 10-year-old orphaned girl called Elsie. And a 10,000-year-old mammoth— I love the age difference, it's brilliant— uh, being brought to life by a mad scientist and making friends in 20th century London. What could possibly go wrong? Well, this is David Walliams, so absolutely everything goes wrong, with lots of bodily sounds and ridiculousness. Another ridiculous and yet bewildering instalment from my favourite bonkers and deliciously mad human being, David Walliams. Crazy characters, the usual cameo of the Queen. The Queen always makes an appearance. I love his depiction of the Queen. It's brilliant. Do you know what? I think he's actually met her a few times. That would be interesting if she's read his books and she's like, "Thanks for that, Mr. Walliams." But yes, crazy characters, The Queen and— a kind of version of the Queen, and enough flatulence jokes to keep the younger audiences happy. That's what it's all about, isn't it? Ice Monster is a mixture of history, science, it's tourism-inspired, humour, heroism, ecology, and monstrous fart. Both of my boys loved it and are constantly coming up with ideas of what could be his next book. So, Walliams, if you're listening, I know you're a fan, maybe get in touch. And if you do follow Walliams on— Walliams, so just Walliams for me— on Twitter, you'll see he's got a new puppy as well, which is quite cute. Dogs and books, he's basically my ideal guy. So Ice Monster by David Walliams, get involved. I've got quite a few friends that have got differing opinions on the David Walliams book, so please do get in touch. Maybe you want to tweet me with your opinions on books and reviews, and I will make sure I squeeze them in there and give you a mention on the next Get Booked show here at Women's Radio Station. Now, throughout my shows, I like to come up with a favourite book quote. I also put them up there on the Instagram page as well, and today's comes from @jdsallinger. I love this. It's, "I'll read my books, I'll drink my coffee, and I'll listen to music, and I'll bolt the door." Welcome to most of my weekends when the kids have either disappeared or I've thrown them on the PS4. Oh wait, no, no, no, I mean reading books. They're reading books. Where I would never put them on the PlayStation. Actually, to be fair, they do read a lot. On National Book Day, my eldest, he's actually at high school, and they were giving out the Book Day tokens, and bless his heart, as his mates who were not so much book fans were kind of throwing all the book tokens on the floor, he picked them all up and met me at Waterstones, and he managed to pick up about 7 or 8 of the books, and I was quite impressed with him, really. I mean, that's just— some of the girls in the studio are looking at me going, "Yeah, okay, brilliant." But no, it was brilliant. He got loads of them. He was so impressed. But, I mean, he is the huge book fan. He had read every single one of them by the end of that day. My eldest son is the one that kind of has the messy room, but it's messy because there's just books everywhere. And I'm like, "Oh, do you want to sell them on eBay?" It's like, "No, I want to read them again. I love them." And I'm like, "Your room's so messy, but it's messy with books. I feel like you're really messing with what I want to be as a parent." Maybe I'll just have a go in for the Lego instead and the dirty underwear everywhere. Anyway, I digress, I digress. This is a book show, not parenting. Remember Oh, deary me. I do actually need to get my eldest son in to do some book reviews because he reads, he reads even more than me. He's lucky. He doesn't have to go to work. He doesn't have to cook dinner. He doesn't have to clean up after himself. He gets to read so many more books. He could just fill the airwaves for hours. Can we do like a 3-hour show with my son? Is that okay? Yeah, brilliant. I'm getting the thumbs up. That's what we want to hear. Remember to get in touch at presenters@womensradiostation.com if you want to be featured on Get Booked or if you have a book recommendation for me. And you can catch up with my previous shows on Women's Radio Station's SoundCloud channel. Just search for Get Booked, and you can also find my book reviews and blogs on hazelburterfield.com. Now on to a real feel-good wellbeing book, Whirlpools, Yoga, and the Balance of Life by Lindsay Porter. Do you know what? I blame Lindsay for my recent urge, despite financial constraints, to go to Thailand, as she was regaling us with tales of past travels through Southeast Asia, and a deal came up on my iPad, and I was just like, "Ah! Book!" So yes, I've just come back from Thailand. Lindsay, I blame you. But you know what? This book came at just the right time for me. Tales of adventure, positivity, calm, and lessons learnt. Short stories inspiring and awesome for the travel lovers, or those that used to be when time was more permitting. Oh, the good old days! Sweet and succinct points at the end that just leave that warm and contented feeling, such as Lindsay's vibe. This book is a great reminder that we are also not set in stone. We can change our path and make mistakes, experience fear and come across the unknown. Everything we live through is a chance to learn and develop. And these are the kind of books you wanna read. She wasn't giving you tasks to do. She wasn't trying to, it wasn't taxing. It was just inspirational. However, do you know what? Sometimes, this is a great quote from her, sometimes there is no lesson, just enjoyment. Exactly. That is the point. And that is one of the great ethos of reading as well, you know, to just be in the moment, read, and just get on board with the words that are on the page. So yeah, I loved everything. It was a relatively— it was a book I could read maybe in 2 or 3 days, but because there were separate stories, you could kind of dip in and out and you could, you know, maybe just embrace it as and when you have time, which is, which is great, especially when time can be such a precious commodity in these days. I also did get the chance to chat to Lindsay on air last week and find out about her book Yoga Events and the work she's doing with the Scottish Council on Mental Health and her recent Inspirational Women's Award. She is an incredible lady. Please do go and find out more at www.lindsaymccormick.com. Www.yoganuu.com. That's yoga and you, you dot com. Find out more about her. She's got so much that she shares with people. Go and check out her Instagram as well. It's very inspirational, and sometimes just seeing her posts are the kind of— give me that kind of calming effect. It's the kind of people that I like to follow on Instagram. And, uh, yes, so that is it. So far we have had Whirlpool's Yoga and the Balance of Life. We've had David Walliams' Ice Monster, The Missing Activist from Louise Burfitt-Dons, and What's Left Unsaid by Deborah Stone. Now, I do like a good old book quote and a book joke on my Instagram page, but do tag me in your book jokes. I want you to get involved, get involved with Women's Radio Station, get involved with the Get Booked Show and you can get in touch with me, you can email me at hazel@hazelbutterfield.com. See how I'm making it incredibly easy for you? And do you know what? I have about 6 books to be getting on with after this show. And what I really love about commuting around London, it's never dead time when you've got a book. It is absolutely brilliant. Right. We are going to go and have another break and then when we come back, we're going to be pressing, Becoming, from Michelle Obama. Such a great book. Welcome back to the second half of today's Get Booked show for Women's Radio Station, where we chat about books, about what I've read, new releases, chat to authors, publishers, and book enthusiasts. I do actually want to get some people on the show who possibly help other people get published, or they've had interesting experiences getting their books out there. It would be interesting to have you in, and possibly if you've got some questions for some people, send them over to me and send them into the station, and we will make sure we will find out everything you want to know that's all about getting your book out there, books and how to get them into the shops and about book signings and where to find some of the best new authors out there. I'm very lucky in my job that I get to be approached by so many emerging writers and it's just incredible because there's so many writers out there and And once you're in with the publishers, it's great, but until then, you need to self-publish, you need to self-market, and it's great to have these people on our shows. We have got some incredible people booked in to come and chat to me here at Women's Radio Station, so make sure you listen at 5 o'clock daily here at Women's Radio Station. We have been chatting about so many different books. Books. I like to keep a variety going. I like my autobiographies, my funny books, my informative books, my thrillers, my wellbeing. I don't like my wellbeing books to be too preachy, but there's definitely a few out there at the moment that I'm just loving. I do want to get Marianne Power into the studio, so if there's anybody listening who knows her please get in touch, hazel@hazelbutterfield.com. I would love, she was one that basically read a self-help book a month for a year and basically did what the book had to offer, suggested. That's a great idea, great commitment. So it'd be brilliant to have her in. And also, last week's guest, Lindsay Porter, she's also introduced me to another lady who's got an incredible book coming out. So she's gonna be coming on the show soon. Soon too. Exciting, exciting. It's all happening here at Get Booked for Women's Radio Station. Now, the next book that I want to talk about has not only been a number one bestseller, I think it is always going to be on the stands in all the major bookshops. It is incredible. It is, of course, the unbelievably talented and personable Michelle Obama 'Becoming.' It was a gift for me at Christmas. It's a big old book and it's one of those ones that just looks fantastic on your coffee table as well. She is such an inspiration. Do you know when you come across a book where it feels like the author is just having a chat, just with you, over an ice glass of Merlot or something, or maybe a cup of green tea, you know, no judgment. They're telling you about their life without sounding like there are details added for effect, or that they've taken something away because they're too ashamed, or scared, or worried about what people think. She is just an incredible force. I absolutely loved reading this book, and it's one of those ones where I didn't want to keep— I didn't want to come back to it constantly. So, when I told you before that I felt the urge to go to Thailand because of Lindsay Porter's book. I took Michelle Obama with me and I just threw the kids in the pool and said, "Mommy's reading, go and have fun." And I sat there for hours just getting through this book. Absolutely loved it. Don't get me wrong, it's still a good book if you're reading it stuck in your living room while it's raining outside. In fact, that's some of the best things to do in Britain We've got to love books in the UK because it's raining all the time. What better? If it rains, read a book. Always find something positive about the British weather. If it's sunny, go outside. Guess what? Read a book, read a book. You see, you see the theme here? It's forming, isn't it? But I finally got the chance to get through this book, and I was just— it was one of those books where you have to sit there just for a bit afterwards and just think, "I need to register and fully appreciate everything that they did, what they're still doing, what she's trying to achieve, who she is as a human being as well as Michelle Obama." Her honesty, a word which is thrown about a little too often in regards to autobiographical novels, that her introspective nature regarding her goals, the effect Barack's ambition had on her, juggling parenting and a fierce and gracious attitude toward a greater good while striving for normalcy for Malia and Sasha, her children. The joy of her pictures as well gave me, once gaining an insight as to the stories behind them, Her generosity of spirit and realism, realism, she has that in bundles, shown in her everyday actions and not-so-everyday actions. Just meeting the Queen, Prince Philip, going off here, having every judgment. You can't even wear a dress without making sure that your team of 20 PR people have said, "No, it's not going to offend that person. That's not going to do that. No, you can't have that haircut because it might offend that person. Oh, and you can't wear things that way. Oh, and you're a woman, so you can't appear to be this way. But you— it's so hard to try and remain true to yourself and yet please everybody. And quite frankly, the truth is we know you can't please everybody. You can barely please anybody in this day and age. And the way she covered the transition from their 8-year stint in the White House to Trump taking over. She worded it beautifully. Yeah, what really struck me is her genuine guilt that most working mothers feel when faced with having to make compromises and not always making the right decisions, or the complexities of not knowing what's right and wrong due to differing opinions. And blatantly open scrutiny. This resonated with me and probably a few hundred million or so other working mums trying to keep their— let's make this radio-friendly— stuff together and keep like 83.7 plates spinning and We get so busy and there's so much going on and you kind of want to be involved, but you don't want to be involved. And you get given these opportunities and do you take them? And inevitably somewhere, somewhere else, some other area of your life is going to suffer. And it was a bit where she kind of realised that possibly they were doing too much, which meant that they couldn't cook the fresh meals, which ultimately affected the health of of, well, herself and her daughters, which is what started the foundation for wanting to have, to have the sensory garden and to grow vegetables in the White House and then start the whole initiative of getting fresh food into kids' diets. America is, and the UK as well actually, is notorious for this whole fast food culture. And you know what, I've been guilty of it lately as well. Some of the work that I do, I kind of, again, it's the 83.7 plates I'm trying to keep spinning as a single mum that sometimes you're just like, "Yeah, I want to cook for you, but I kind of need to do something quick because you need to do your homework. I want to help you do your homework. I've got to do this, but we've got to get there. I need to get you ready for this thing." and don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of cooking, but occasionally you're just passing the Golden Arches and you're like, "Oh, but it'll be quick, they won't complain, it'll just keep everybody happy," and it can be a little bit of a trap. And this, this book was just, it was just so real, and she has arguably played the most important female Black role to date in an age of social media's instantly subjective, cruel, and relentless nature. Jealousy and lies take hold. And you know what? They haven't got the 2.4 picture-perfect life. There's divorces, there's, you know, both parents aren't around, there's illness, there's everything. Idealism is thrown up in the air, the people that she uses as mentors and support. It wasn't just your, your typical kind of white middle-class family in their big houses. She was, she's just an incredible force, and I love the way that she found support, um, and in just incredibly wondrous and unique ways. Her understanding of the sad fact that the more you do, the more you achieve, the more intense jealousy and criticism you attract. And the trap of a self-fulfilling prophecy galvanised in so many forms by the judgmentally ill-educated, or those stubbornly archaic in their own perspective— well, perceptions, perspectives, beliefs. Her genuine nature was an absolute thrill to get on board with, um, an absolute must-read. It was quite interesting actually to see the reaction from people when I was in bars and coffee shops reading it, and they'd come up to me and see what part I was on. I love random conversations with people, and Becoming appears to be like one of those books that recommend a person. It's just absolutely brilliant. Um, I've still got a little bit more that I want to talk about, about Michelle Obama, but let's go across to another break. I'll be back in a couple of minutes. Stick with us. I'm Hazel Butterfield here at Women's Radio Station, keeping you informed about everything to do with the latest books that have been released and books to just keep you entertained while traveling around, commuting, ignoring the children, or if you just want to have a little bit of escape or find out about a certain topic. We like to give you quite a variety here on my shows for Get Booked. Now, we were just discussing in the previous section of the book Becoming by Michelle Obama, um, and And to be honest, I could have done a whole show just talking about how incredible the book was. It was just a delight to read. It kind of gave you a bit of an insight into the way politics are done as well, quite different to that of the UK system. It was— I kind of felt like I'd learned something, but also I felt empowered, which is pretty much what she's all about. She is the typical empowering female, which is what we want here at women's radio station. But if you haven't read the book yet, go and get it, and when you do, you'll hear her talking about her carpool karaoke session with James Corden. Just, is there anything that bloke can't do? He has got the dream job. But, um, what she did, she describes how, um, She practiced for ages. It's not a secret, it's in her book, and squillions of people have bought it and read it. And she practiced so hard, but they just kind of— couple karaoke, they make it look like someone's just, you know, popped in and they've just, "Oh look, a song's come on the radio, let's sing it together." And wow, it's perfect. And she's describing how she practiced for ages. But seriously, go and check it out. Out the Carpool Karaoke. Michelle Obama and James Corden, get a bit of Missy Elliott in there as well. She is a good singer, but I think a few of us have heard Barack Obama sing as well. They're a— I wonder if they're going to be coming out with a charity single. That'd be great, wouldn't it? Uh, there's also, if you go on to my website hazelbutterfield.com, um, one of my reviews of the book Becoming By Michelle Obama, there is actually another YouTube video on there as well when she's doing a book signing and Ellen DeGeneres is coming on and trying to wind her up, and it just shows her personality a bit more and her good old sense of humour. It's brilliant. Go and check it out. Now, now, um, we are on to my final book of today's show, and it is from an author that we recently had in the studio, Amanda Robson. We were talking about her book Guilt. Now, also while I was away in Thailand, which was forced upon me by reading the book by Lindsay Porter, uh, I read Obsession, which was actually the first book ever released by Amanda Robson. It was also a Times bestseller, and if there is ever more a fitting read for a poolside or beachside holiday, I've not come across it. It was, it was just perfect. And if you do like a little bit of Instagram porn, you can also, not only the, the show-specific Instagram, mine @nuttybutty10, there's some of the books that I've just put on there with like kind of my toes in the background and the waves crashing down, and my kids were just frolicking in the sea and I just read a book. And drank a cold drink. It's the perfect way. You see, not only am I telling you about all these incredible books to read, I'm giving you really good suggestions on how and where to read them, and you are welcome. I wonder if I can pass that by the taxman as offering up advice for a book show. It's not going to work, is it? No, no. Oh well, positive mental attitude until I get slapped by the taxman. Anyway, so this book Obsession by Amanda Robson, seemingly from the first few chapters you have a niggling feeling you know how this book is going to unfold, but love it regardless. But then you get thrown into a roller coaster of a ride even up until the last page. It's just the way she writes these books and you kind of think, you know, I mean, there's guilt, there's obsession, there's envy, you kind of get to grips with what the book's going to be about, but it's just the way that they unfold. Who's the protagonist? Who's obsessed with who? Who would you accept a glass of wine? Right, put it this way, if somebody, if you possibly had had an affair with somebody's partner, or maybe they'd cheated with your partner, would you be having a glass of wine with them? Would you trust receiving a glass of wine from them? Um, I'd be tempted to say no, but you know what? Sometimes life just gets complicated. And when do you class somebody, when they're having an obsession, as a disease? I mean, it is a disorder, it's a tricky one, and the way that Amanda covers all the different areas in this book is just incredible. Absolutely loved it. This book delves deeply into the debate of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you are treated a certain way for long enough, assumptions being made, Does it back you into a corner? Does the psychology of being told you are a certain way take over? When do we know that a hunch is turning into paranoia? Where is the line between infatuation and love? And, you know, when you go searching for something, it's quite often because something is missing. Somebody's not necessarily giving you something,, or, and where you, the places you find to kind of fulfill whatever it is you are missing. Amanda just covers these topics brilliantly in Obsession. I also loved it that, um, Obsession was based largely in my hometown, Amanda Robson being a South West Londoner herself. See if you can guess where. It's not necessarily an unknown place, it's quite highly populated, and I don't mean London, that's huge. I'm talking quite like a specific kind of town and village just on the corner of Southwest London. It was quite sweet because some of the way she was describing what was happening, it was like, "I've been in that sweet shop. Yes, I've been to that restaurant that used to be a kind of public toilet," which don't get me wrong, the restaurant's brilliant now. Although you can tell actually that when she wrote this book, was 2 or 3 years ago because it's since been taken over by a pizza place and they do fantastic pizzas, so if you do ever figure out where it is— I feel like I digress sometimes. But yeah, she— after reading Guilt as well, I can honestly say that her third book, which is coming out in early April, which is called Envy, I cannot wait to get on board with that. She is having a book launch in Waterstones in Southwest London very soon, which I will be going to. It's like a dream come true. I get to meet all these incredible authors and then they invite me to places full of authors writing books, talking about books, and then you get invited back to the after-party, which is a house party full of authors that all know each other. It's just, it's brilliant. It's like, it's like a drunk working in a brewery. That term's not okay. I'm not gonna get in trouble for that, am I? No, fine. Party in a bookshop and then back at the author's house. So I was very lucky that her publisher, who knows I love her books completely, was very kind in sending me a preview copy of Envy, which I've been working my way through. Again, one of the perks of being a book fan and having a book show at women's radio station. And I have been reading that one on the way here. I'm halfway through it already. I only started it a couple of days ago. And again, I'm reading it going, "Oh, you kind of think you know this is going to go." And I have been put in my place so many times, just even on the Piccadilly Line on the way in. And I cannot wait to get cracking. Do you know what, especially for those of you that— we quite often commute for up to an hour a day on the way to work, and it's just— reading just gets you off in a different world. And do you know what, there's something about sticking your head up and looking at people on trains, on buses, on the Tube, and they're constantly on their phones, and a little bit of a smile smile comes to my face when I see people actually reading a book, and a real book as well. Do not get me wrong, love Kindle, it's got, it's got a place, um, but, you know, it's nice to see people reading and getting on board and kind of having that little bit of escape. We are soon going to be launching a book show on men's radio station. It's going to be focusing around mental mental health and well-being for men. So if you know of any books or know of any authors that are men and they are writing books aimed towards helping men go through the mental health crisis, which is just unfortunately apparently getting quite, quite worse, I want to hear from you. Get in touch with me at Men's Radio Station and we will be launching that show pretty quickly. We want to get in as many male authors as well, We love our women's station, but we like to give the men a bit of a, a bit of a chance as well. So there you have it, enough books to keep you entertained and out of trouble. Sure, I read 2 or 3 books a week and it possibly doesn't work for me, which possibly might be why I'm quite busy. Maybe I need to read even more books, that's what I need to do. I'm Hazel Butterfield and you have been listening to Get Booked for Women's Radio Station.
