Hello and welcome to Future Classic Women Awards with me, Stefania Passamonte, on Woman's Radio Station, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists on the classic panorama. Today on Future Classical Women Awards, we will be talking to Georgie Matcham and Laura Kütz from the pop opera group Ida Girls, this year on the red carpet of the latest Classic Brits Awards. Welcome, Georgie and Laura. Thank you. Thank you for having us. So, Georgie and Laura, What is the Ida Girls? So it's actually Ida Girls. So yeah, I mean, it's quite complicated, isn't it? Because most people think it's I-D-A because they see I-D-A and think it stands for something. But no, it is just Ida. We all met on the London production of Princess Ida, which is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, and basically just formed the group from that. We all became very good friends, and Laura kind of rang us up after the show was finished and said, you know, do you want to sing together? So that's how the kind of birth of I.D. if you like started and we just kept meeting up every week and singing together and then the group kind of formed from that, didn't it? Just because we— Both dad of cups of tea and discussions about boys. Chats about life and love and things like that and we just loved hanging out so much and then we kind of realized that we had such a lot of chemistry as a group just because we were all kind of best friends pretty much immediately and that, well, we hope that that kind of transferred to the stage as well because I mean, yeah. So we seem to have a lot of chemistry, don't we, on stage? And yeah, just very lucky and kind of, yeah, yeah, just a very lucky series of events that happened. Yeah, fantastic. So I have a very big question. What does it mean, pop opera, today for you? The basic term would be a combination of both pop and opera music, but I guess ours is, it's kind of become more of an Ida sound because we arrange our own songs. We do our— all our own vocal arrangements. So we're kind of trying to redefine the, the definition of pop and opera, aren't we? Pop opera. Yeah, I mean, it's very much classical crossover, um, which is what we are. We're kind of a classical crossover group, but, um, we, we call ourselves a pop opera quartet, I guess, because we, we try and, um, we try and merge, um, opera and pop together, or rather the, um, the kind of audience that would like classical music and the audience that would like pop music. We're trying to get a balance. Yeah, definitely trying to make it transferable. So we do have a very unique sound in the way in which, um, Laura and Wendy, who's also in the group, arrange the songs and arrange the pop songs in a very classical way. Um, and then of course we do opera, opera arias as well, but we kind of just try and make them more fun. And then sometimes we mash up the two genres, so we do have mashups of things like Puccini and Wiz Khalifa, and always in full part harmony, always in full part harmony. Yeah, so it's, it's basically like, because there's, there's lots of classical crossover artists and I guess it's just naturally what we're passionate about, the kind of pop opera sound. So, and there doesn't seem to be that out there at the moment, so that's kind of what we do and just kind of what we've ended up doing naturally. So I guess we're trying to just move on the classical crossover genre and just, yeah, just kind of like make it quite current for our audiences. Yeah. So do you think Opera today should be, uh, could be more popular. Um, like the, the opera to court. What I mean, for example, when you go to Royal Opera House, there is a code of conduct, right? When you go to see the opera, when, when you go to, uh, um, the concerts, for example, of Katherine Jenkins or this type of Bocelli, it's, it's a totally different type of audience. So Yeah, I think that the kind of— in the opera world, what we're trying to do is we're trying to kind of get a younger generation interested in classical music and interested in opera and to make it more current. And that's— I think that's kind of one of the reasons why we do mashups. So we'll be singing a pop song, like a very current pop song, and then we'll kind of, you know, mash up like a very classical theme over the top of it. And our audiences, especially younger audiences, go, "Oh my gosh, that's amazing!" And we go, "Yes, that's classical music! You will love classical music!" classical music, it's epic. So we do try and— we do kind of, um, try and aim to a younger generation as well as, as well as kind of an older generation too. We kind of are trying to aim for both. Yeah. Well, you are both— all of you actually, the four of you, you're all pretty young, so yeah, it makes sense. I mean, to say to the, um, people of your age that it's not just a classical opera, it's not just for— oh no, no, absolutely not. And, and when when we've done shows before, and we do a lot internationally, and I mean, the comment that we always get is either, "Oh my goodness, I didn't know, I didn't think I liked opera, but I like opera now," you know, and/or we get, "Oh, I didn't think I liked pop," or, "I didn't think I liked that song, but oh, now I," you know, it's just doing music in a different way to kind of appeal to more people, I think, yeah. So do you have any artists that inspired you to go down this route? If you want. Laura's the one that you have all these— she has the coolest people that she follows. Like, she's like a Guns N' Roses girl. Like, she's our— yeah, she's the— she's our— who are your artists that inspire you? Oh goodness. But well, there's the Il Divo artists that inspire the pop opera realm of the music that we do. But then, I mean, there's also the Bruce Springsteens and the U2 and the older generation of of pop music that inspires the group as well. So like, yeah, music that might be interested by our mums and dads, maybe. Yeah. Yeah, and definitely in terms of opera singers as well, like we're, I mean, like Renée Fleming and Sumi Jo and just all, yeah, there's just some voices out there that are just so incredible and they kind of, those kind of voices definitely inspire us to keep doing classical music and keep putting it out there just because they're so epic, so. Yeah. All right, so talking about the COVID from, you know, the modern music, shall we just try to listen to something from your upcoming album, EP, from your upcoming EP? Yes, please do. Today we're talking to Georgie and Laura from the pop opera group AIDA Girls. Um, so, um, Georgie and Laura, um, what would you say was the most a challenging moment in your career, upcoming career, if you had any? That's a hard one. Have you found anything challenging, Laura? Oh, I think, I think as an overall, um, the, the only challenging kind of bit is about our career is how much we travel. And oh goodness, the internet, that's probably a big challenge. That's not a challenge. Oh my gosh. Um, I am, but I think probably getting over like jet lag potentially is being the biggest challenge. Do you reckon? Yes. Because it's not— nothing really with the group. Obviously, we do everything ourselves, we do everything in-house, so we write our own arrangements and we choose our own songs and we do our own kind of picking of the dresses and choreography and all those things. But yeah, I would say all of that kind of feels quite easy and quite natural. Yeah, all quite fun. But yeah, I would say it's just the travel. Like this year we're off to New York and then Australia, and we've— we just got back from Copenhagen yesterday, so you can imagine the jet lag. It's like just trying to get into the right time zones and stuff. So yeah, what we were once— we once had to perform after a flight to Barbados, didn't we? Oh yeah, yeah, that was up in the morning at like 2 or something in the morning, and then fly to Barbados, and then they're like, oh, by the way, you're on tonight. Oh, okay, sure. Yeah, so I reckon That's probably the most challenging thing. All right. So, um, but you know, in terms of traveling, so would you say that would have like makes you more friends? And how is it with your personal life, for example? How do you combine your personal life with this traveling, for example? Yeah, I mean, you would imagine, wouldn't you, as 4 girls traveling all the time, you would imagine there'd be fights. But weirdly— It's kind of making us stronger, isn't it? Yeah, and we find it quite fun, don't we? We're always like, we're always the ones laughing in like the queues to get on the plane and stuff. We just find everything hilarious and it's always like really lighthearted and we just have like, you know, live chats and have loads of fun. So, and that's been the same for about 2 years now. So yeah, you would have thought as 4 girls spending all that time together, we would argue, but we just don't at all. We just all get on so well. Um, yeah, I think we're really lucky actually, come to think of it. Yeah, that is wonderful. Absolutely. Yeah. Now I see you on stage as well. I mean, the chemistry that there is between you four, it's, it's not, it's not very common. So I think that might be the key of your success. Oh yeah, maybe, maybe. We do love each other. We do, we do, we do. Every time we think we're like, no, we're not. That's what we're like when someone else is doing a solo. We're all like watching with like love and they're like, oh God, it's my just listening in, just thinking, enjoying what they're singing, you know. Yeah. So, um, so you said that— you mentioned that you met in the production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida. Um, so how would you say is the relationship between opera to Kur and the musical theater, for example? Well, Gilbert and Sullivan is operetta, so it's, it's not slap bang in the middle, but it's kind of in the middle, isn't it? Because it's not quite opera, but it's, it's definitely not musical theater. Um, it's just opera, it's like light opera if you like. I mean, the difference with opera and musical theatre, I mean, the musical difference is just, is quite huge. The vocal qualities that you would use in both is massive, yeah. And I think musical theatre obviously is ever so slightly, with the things that are coming out at the moment, are more current, and opera is just an older form of music. Some operas anyway, not obviously the newest stuff, but yeah, so I think just that it's just the difference in the history of it. Like, you know, opera, um, is kind of a bit older, I guess, than musical theater. So you can hear that in the music. Well, I think there was already at the time some sort of musical theater that, you know, was having the easier area for the, the normal audience, and it just didn't pass the test of time. Yeah. Yes, because I guess opera was, opera was like kind of the popular form of music at the time. And yeah, I would say Mozart was the first, but even Rossini with the opera comique, they were really putting in, you know, the fun bits. And Carmen was kind of deemed as quite musical theater of its day, wasn't it? So if you had to sing opera, what would be your favorite character to sing? What would be yours? Mine would be Coco from Madame Butterfly. I think it'd be Violetta. Oh, from Traviata. You totally— yeah, you totally love her. Choices, choices. What would yours be? I reckon it'd be Oscar from Verdi. Oscar the boy. Yeah, pageboy. I think like a fun character because I'm quite short, so I think I can get away with it. Definitely put my hair up and the light. Yeah, like running notes. Do you think the, um, heroines or the heroes from the operas are still modern? I mean, the the subject that is talked about. For example, Madame Butterfly, she's killing herself for love. Oh yeah, but I mean, that's Miss Saigon, isn't it? So the stories are timeless because that's what Miss Saigon's based on. So 100%, the stories and the heroines are just timeless. What you do for love. And I think the stories stand the test of time, don't they? Definitely. And I think the female characters in opera are very, very strong, which is, I mean, female empowerment and everything like that today is on the rise. So I think it's almost like But yeah, it is timeless and it's going to be there forever. Oh my God, you look at Carmen. She's so sassy. Yeah, she's sassy, isn't she? She's the sassiest of them all. Yeah. All right. So shall we maybe listen to one of your most operatic arias from La Llorona? This one has a bit of a twist, so be prepared. A twist? Oh, I'm very curious to hear it. All right. Uh, for example, But first of all, what was the funniest or most embarrassing moment in your career? Oh, I've got one. Oh, can you say that one? Wait, which one? The one where you forgot your shoes? Oh, that was horrific. Basically, we had been filming. Well, yeah, we were doing film clips all day and Georgie being Georgie, on the way from Somerset to Wales to the next gig, had lost her shoes somewhere along the way. Oh, wow. So— And I only had sketches. She only had sketches. Yes, but luckily your dresses were quite long. I basically had to wear trainers and a massive ball gown, so my ball gown was like trailing and I was trying to stand on my tiptoes because the girls are so much taller than me. So much taller. So are you like 5'7", Laura? 5'8". Are you 5'8"? Okay, so I'm like 5'2", so you can imagine the difference, and then 5'8" in heels. And I had people coming up to me after the show and they asked me— They asked me whether I had like a growth problem. I was like, no, it's just they look much taller on stage. Stage because they were in heels and I wasn't. And oh God, and I was trying to hide the trainers the whole show. It was so embarrassing. Yeah, I've done quite similar things. I once had— I once bought an odd pair of shoes as well. They were like a right and a left pair. They were just different colors, but that's okay. Shame must go on. Yes, that's pretty embarrassing. That's very, very funny. All right. And you, Georgie? Laura. Laura. No, never, never been embarrassed in my whole life. No, not off the top of my head anyway. Can you think of anything? No, not really. I'm just perfect. Joking. I'm joking. Definitely moments. Oh yeah, definitely. I'll have a think. No, you know what, we've been talking before in the previous episodes about the zodiacal signs, so can I just throw a guess? For example, are you Aquarius or something similar? Oh no, I'm Taurus. Oh yeah, but it's quite close, isn't it? Yeah, yeah, yeah, very close. What's mine? What's mine? I would say, but then, you know, if I don't guess, that doesn't work. I have no idea. Now, what are you? And Taurus as well. Taurus? Yeah, actually, we're both not very Taurus. We're both quite airy fairy, would you say? The, the ascendant, maybe. I don't know if you know it. Maybe. You know, we've been talking about Clara Schumann, that is the music soundtrack of the show, and she was married to Robert, who is Libra, and she fall in love for Brahms, who was— eh, pardon, for Robert, who's Gemini, and she fall in love with Brahms, who's Gemini as well. And so she had this thing for Geminis. Oh my gosh, right! And last time, so I'm Libra, and we had Sarah and Laura Ayoub, and Laura is Libra like me, and she goes with Gemini, who's her sister. So, why not? So here we got two Taurus. Okay. Do you know the other two girls then? Oh, Wendy's— Wendy's the one before Taurus. Is that Aquarius? Yes. Or Aries? Is that Aquarius? I don't know. I think it's Aries. I think Wendy's Aries. Yeah, I'm not sure what Sarah is. No idea. Maybe, maybe— no, no, no idea. Sorry, go with that next time. We will find out for you. All right, all right, very good. So, um, Um, and do you have any strange hobby? Strange hobbies? Um, not strange. I'm a— I love running. Yeah, I'm a keen runner. Um, but that's not that strange, is it? So yeah, I run in my spare time quite a lot. I love dog spotting. Oh, I don't think that's strange either because this is wonderful, especially in London when there's like dogs everywhere. I just— I like to take photos and send them on to my boyfriend. She's dog mad. If she sees a she's like, and she has to go and like pat it and stuff. Yeah. Is that a hobby though? I don't know. Do you have otherwise, you know, a ritual before going on stage? Yeah, we do, but it's kind of weird. So we just had this thing, I'm gonna try and explain it, but honestly it's never gonna sound good. But we, so instead of like high-fiving or put your hands together, we kind of do it, we kind of just all put our bums together. Yeah, reverse way. So we like reverse high-five. I can't explain it any more than that, but That's what we seem to do before every show, and it brings us luck, and we can't not do it. And it just makes us go out and have a good time and have fun. Because we find it funny, and then we start laughing, and then we're on stage and we're like, yes. Wonderful. So what shall we listen to in this mood, in this joyful mood? Maybe Mystery of the Gift. Um, so we were talking about your career, about the funny moment. Do you have any piece of advice, you know, the treasure thing that would say to yourself or to an aspiring young singer? I think just the key is just, you know, give everything 100% and just work as hard as you can. And you do really have to keep going, I think. And you just have to be— it's kind of how you deal with, like, knockbacks and how you get back up and carry on going. And that's kind of real success, I think. Because it's hard, isn't it, to make a career as a freelance singer? And I think you've just got to have faith, have faith in your talent and keep going and ask questions as well. Like, don't be scared to ask people for advice and, yeah, that's what I would say. What would you say, Lana? And don't be afraid to be your own boss as well. I think definitely as a younger artist, I was very much reliant on other people getting me work and other people creating opportunities for me and then all of a sudden it was like, well, hang on, 'Well, I mean, I can just do that myself.' And then I met Georgie, and Georgie's a go-getter, so Georgie did it all for me. But also, surround yourself with people who are after the same goals and who want to build you up, like, you know, women supporting women, and just, yeah, surround yourself by positive people and keep going. As long as you're happy, just keep going. Absolutely. Do you have any great teachers you that, you know, set or model that made you to think about? Oh, a great teacher that kind of inspired us to go on to this kind of— I mean, God, I've had some incredible teachers in my time. I think every teacher I've had has been inspiring, really. Definitely when I was younger, when I was about 16, I had a teacher called Jane Highfield who really kind of, um, because I was, I was in Jersey at the time and she suggested I go to Cheetham School of Music and, and kind of opened my eyes to that. And so that's what I ended up doing, and I left the island and did that and studied soprano singing and piano. And, and I think that was a big turning point for me because I'm not sure if I'd stayed in Jersey how— yeah, because I don't, that I don't think the, um, opportunities to be a freelance singer out there, um, at the as they are over in the UK. And so yeah, that, that made a massive difference in my, in my life for sure. For you? I would have to be my very first singing teacher, Sandra Milliken, back in Brisbane. She's just— she was just so encouraging. And I mean, I would skip home after every lesson every Monday, and it was like I'd just be walking on air after. It was just the way that she made me feel so confident about myself and my abilities. And you could have been the best technique teacher or the best répétiteur in the whole world, but if you don't have that connection with your student and you don't encourage them like she did with me, I just don't think I would have been here right now. Yeah. Wonderful. And actually, I didn't ask you, do you— how is it, you travel a lot around the world. Do you have ever had a problem like being lost in translation? Over— um, oh, not really, I don't think. Do you, do you think we've ever— no, we've been pretty lucky, haven't we? Most people touch wood. Yeah, we've been really— yeah, no, we have been really lucky. Okay, very good. Yeah. So would you say, but would you say, for example, that the audience in Australia is different than the audience here in London, or— Oh, well, we're yet to find out. Yeah, so we've got, um, we're doing a festival in Brisbane, um, in, uh, the Noosa Festival. Um, so yes, so we're doing that in— Ah, that's your debut in Australia? Yes, yes, yes. So it's, it's from my, my home, uh, state. Um, but it will be the first time I will be performing with these girls. Yes, we'll let you know, we'll let you know how it goes. Okay, fantastic.
