Hello and welcome to future Classic Women Awards with me, Stefanie Passamonte. The program where we search for the most amazing new female artist on the classical panorama. Today on future Classic Women Awards, we will be talking to Marisa di Muro. Good morning, Marisa. Good morning. Good morning. Marisa is an opera singer. Soprano. Yes, yes, that's right. Where are you from, Marisa? You're Italian, I know that. Do you want to tell us more? I was born in Seneca, a very small village in the hills of southern Italy, I like to call it, but it's in Campania and Yes, very small community. So how did you end up in London? Well, it's quite a tragic situation because we had an earthquake in 1980 in the Irpinia 23rd of November, and my house was completely destroyed and I lost my mother there. So I had my sister in United Kingdom and I moved into United Kingdom to live with my sister. Wow, that was very tragic episode, isn't it? Yes. Were you there? Yes, I was present, yes, in the house with my mother and father and my cousin at the time. Yes, very, very tragic, but a very strong experience which I always keep with me all the time. And it's given me also lots of strength in my music and as a person as well. So how did you decide to become an opera singer? Actually decide? It started. Suppose on a Sunday we would always go to church back in Seneca at my village. And I had a really loud voice. So when I came to this country, I went to, I needed to express myself and rock music didn't quite suit me because perhaps my image and being as loud as I was. I went to the Kent Music School school and I started taking lessons. Okay. And I must admit, when the, the coach, the, the tutor first showed me what opera sounded like, I laughed at him. I said, you want me to do that? That is, it was really quite scary for me. But then I sort of adjusted myself and I felt it was something that belonged to me and that's how I started opera singing. Wow. So what do you think? What does it mean for you to be an opera singer today? Today is a lot, lot harder than it was years ago. I mean, the social media, you have to be doing a lot of social media. Yes. And social media was done differently. Perhaps like in Caruso days or Maria Calla's days, they would do movies at the time, I remember. Yes, yes, they did movies and they traveled a lot. But with social media, you are up against this. Everyone has to do it and everyone is doing it and there is Even more competition. And they're very good. Some people are amazing. Yes. Not necessarily very good singing or playing, but. That's right. So you have to master photo shoots, recording, becoming recording artists. You have to have so many other different skills. Yeah. And sometime you are required to, you know, fit in and look a certain shape. Maybe you need to lose weight and age plays. Yeah. You know, something on there. But it gets a lot, lot harder. You are required to have many more skills at the same time. I guess it gives more opportunities. I mean, there is people that otherwise wouldn't have a chance to be noticed and if they are good enough with the social media, somehow they might get opportunity that they wouldn't get otherwise. Exactly. That's exactly. So if they have the passion, they might get more of a chance than someone who has started for many years. Yeah. As usual, there is the two sides of it, isn't it? The good and the bad. And so who's your role model or inspiration? Who? You know, it has always been Maria Callas. Oh, yeah, always. And I'm fortunate enough to be studying with Jenny Hill, who is based in London. She's a vocal coach and singing teacher. And she. She trained with Elvira de Halco, who was Maria Calles teacher. Yeah. Wow. So for me, she was the best. It's very difficult for any soprano to beat what she did, unfortunately. But what about Maria Tebaldi? Yes, as well. Not for my personal taste. Not as much as Maria Callas, because. Because that is very top. However, I admire many, many other singers, sopranos also, who sing today. Absolutely, yes. Ana Natrepko, Angelo Giorgio. Hugely, hugely admire of them. But Maria Calles is always at the top for me. So the first song you want to listen today is Ave Maria by Schubert. Is that because it represents your journey, your start in music? It does. And it's always something that asked to sing. All right. It's sort of. It fits with me. I manage to communicate to people. This is what music is about, to be able to communicate with people. And if people tell me, oh, you brought tears to my eyes, and I said, well, I have done a good job. I'm sorry about that, but I have done a good job. I say. Absolutely. Shall we listen then to Ave Maria sang by Marisa Timuro sa. Sam. Holy. And this was Ave Maria sang by Marisa di Mo. We will be back after a short break. Welcome to women's radio Station. I'm Sarah Louise Ryan and welcome to Love Lessons live on Women's Radio Station. Today we're talking to an impressive Italian soprano, Marisa Di Muro. Marisa, you're not just a singer, you're also a composer. That's right, yes. I have explored in that. So how did you feel the need of composing? How do you say, the call for composing? Yes. Well, it didn't actually start with myself because it is quite daunting to call yourself a composer. When you interpret great works, pieces of music, you sort of think you can't compete against Rossini or Verdi or Bellini, those type of composers. But an agent that saw me at a performance, they suggested that, why don't you do some original music? And I thought, oh, my God, that's going to be quite daunting. But then I started writing some lyrics and I found out that it was actually very therapeutical for me to be doing that. And at the same time, I was applying the skills I had learned at the Music Conservatoire. So why not? I thought, I am a musician, why should I just be an interpreter of other people's work? So. So I contacted a recording studio and I collaborated with the producer. And the very first track that we did was Dancing Moon. That is the song that we're going to listen later today. So tell me about Dancing Moon, how that came. You know, I wanted today to combine electronic music with my voice. Oh, wow. And so it was a little bit, like, you could say an experiment, but it's an expression still from within. And so we created the track to my lyrics and we put together the music and the beats and everything. And what I wanted to create was something quite out of this world and to create something that. Something relevant to music. Dancing Moon says the words Come with me Dancing moon We're here just for one night Let me take you to another place Sparkling lights We are the dancing moon it's drawing people to music and let themselves abandon themselves through music. Can we reveal about the video? There is an exciting video coming out. That is what I'm really even more so excited about, because I have. The choreography is by the first ballet soloist from the Royal Opera House, Valentino Zucchetti. And we have in the video 2. Two ballet dancers from the Royal Opera House, Katarina Nikolski and Leo Dixon so themselves and me singing. And I'm wearing designer clothes by JAL Fashion, who has recently been a Cannes and Madeira Fashion going on to Dubai. So there are collaborations and also the home makeup artist team. So there are a variety of different collaborations. Something which if you are just singing opera, you don't so much explore these other areas. And music video is something I would love to explore, furthermore. That's so fantastic. Do you know when the video will come out? We are in the process of editing it, so it will be launched very shortly in the next few weeks, two or three weeks. Because obviously we have to select the best shots and put it out there. So how did you get in contact with Royal Opera House with the dancer, the Royal Opera Ballet? I actually, I was an actress there. Yes. An actress in one of the productions of Pagiacci with the Placido Domingo singing Antonio Papano conducting Angelo Gorgu and Dmitry Hovsky, who's no longer here with us. Yeah. And so there are. Yes. Fantastic. So I was acting on the stage there and it was like making history for me to be so lovely. And so you. You have to really pick the best. What you're doing. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. So to have ballet dancers from the Royal Opera House in my music video to my original tracks, what more would I want? Absolutely, absolutely. So, you know, I was recently at Royal Opera House watching Andrea Chenier. Yes. With Alanya. And the. The Opera House was just, you know, holding their breath. Yes. It's the power of live music, which what I try to. To say to people when I'm singing is that recordings is one thing, but live music, you. You. The vibrations just hit you directly. And then with an orchestra like Royal Opera House. And the best. They get the best of the best singers. Yes, yes. So it's important. Yeah. You can just close your eyes sometimes. The productions are amazing too, but you could just close your eyes and listen to it. Do you have any dream role? Yes, Tosca. Aha. Yes, definitely Tosca. I would say, whether I will perform it or I will do a music video, I will do it. Absolutely. I can say whatever powerful woman it's about. Yes. Dramatic. I can let myself out in the anger. Well, you know, I can't wait to listen to Dancing Moon. Let's listen to it. With. The dancing. The dancing. Sam. It. Oh, and this was Dancing Moon from Marisa di Moro, sung and composed by Marisa. I mean, how did you get into this type of rhythm? This is a very contemporary. Do you like dancing at this type of music? For example. I do. I mean, I wanted to create something different, something as daring as possible. And I wanted to create a track which I imagined myself being in a nightclub. All right. Yeah, it does sounds like. With lots of lights flashing onto you and hearing the track. And if you abandon yourself to music, you have a great time. And that's the power of music. So this is why I imagined in this track and the words are dancing moon, come with me to another place. Let me take to another place. Sparkling lights. Is it like let me take you from the nightclub to an opera house, for example? Yes. Again, it's a magic of music. Again, you were saying earlier about experiencing live performance and the power of it is like it pins you to a wall. And that's what music should do, should capture you completely. If it's done well, if it's done right, it has to bring out emotions in you, has to take you to another place. So do you listen to other style of music? Yes. I've even recorded covers of, for example, Leonard Cohen, Hallelujah, Ratchet's Brothers, the song from Ghost. Okay, yes. All right. Of course you're thinking of the title now, but yes, I, I like other music as well because if music communic, if you communicate, communicates to you, it doesn't matter what genre is. Yeah. And I don't like to be fixed for just one thing, however fixed in a box. That's right. I remain loyal to my bell counter training and whatever I sing, I sing with that style. Absolutely. All right then. We will be back after a short break. Welcome to the women's radio station supporting women's well being. Welcome back to future Classic Women Awards, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists on the classical panorama. Today our guest is Marisa di Muro, an Italian opera singer with an amazing talent for composing and for bringing classical music to a wider audience. We just heard this fantastic song singing Dancing to the Moon. That was really, really impressive. So what do you think about crossover then? That's a crossover song, isn't it? Well, this crossover, when they do, we will hear afterwards that we have a track to listen to. Whatever I do, as I say it, I retain my bel canto training and I think music has, you have to draw in different people. I'm a huge believer for diversity, reaching out to different audience and combining with different collaborations as much as possible. I mean, there are singers who just do certain repertoire in operas and some do just the German repertoire, some do just Italian. And we need a diversity in music to be able to explore as artists, to sing different types of music. And so that feels me comfortable. Yeah. So crossover is just a word, really. To means that you're. You're reaching out to different audience, you're bridging. That's right. And then you're bringing in different audience to class classical music. A lot of the times I have sung, even at fashion shows on the catwalk and I had people coming up, you know, I would have never wanted to go to listen opera, but you've drawn me to it. So there are different audiences out there who are not familiar with classical music. So it's a good use for it. Absolutely. So what would you say was the most exciting moment your career? Be singing at Saddles Wells Theatre as a solo soprano and with a dancer? No, that's just concert performance. We do a full orchestra. Oh, wow. That's right. Yeah. And acting, my acting role at the Royal Opera House with Plastic Domingo. La creme de la creme. Everyone was there. Absolutely. And the most challenging moment in your career. Challenging is. Well, life is challenging in itself. Dealing with a family, dealing with the house moves and dealing with time. You change as a person and your voice changes. You adapt to. To it. Yeah. And you sing what is right for you to be singing. Absolutely. That's something that not everybody knows. But the voice changes with age, with physicity as well with your body. Well, for example, for a pianist. A pianist is always a pianist. The piano doesn't change, isn't it? So it is quite a challenging instrument, the voice. It is, yes. Because not only the voice changes, but you change as a person, therefore you express things in a different way. If you're interpreting somebody who's particularly very, very young, it's a lot more difficult when you are a lot older to identify. You express it differently. You might put too much passion in it, whereas it doesn't need. So that's technicalities there. So what would you say are the pro and cons of your career in general, the job of an opera singer? I would say, you know, if you have to travel a lot, that is not good. If you have a family. And I tend to stay mainly in England. Yes. And recording. And again, I use social media to put things out there. Yeah, yeah, that's good. And. But the pro and the con, it keeps you. It keeps you. The voice keeps you fresh and it keeps you young, keeps you active. Yeah. And a lot of people say how opera singers, they don't look old, their face by singing, we generate a lot of oxygen to our complexion. Oh, I didn't know that. Yes. Okay, yes, that's a good point. So that's one of the points. Why not mentioning that. Okay, yes. And you are massaging because you're using all the facial muscles, so you don't need a facial breathing. Your posture, these are also very good. Ah, clever. Okay, I didn't know that. So would you say to an aspiring young student or younger self, if you could go back in time, I would say, having been through everything, sort of myself, you have to be really, really committed and passionate. Not do it because you want to become a star, but do it because that is your passion to want to do it. But most of all, you need to be able to communicate to people. If you can't communicate to people and you're just singing notes, I would say maybe, maybe not to do it. Well, let's. Let's. It's quite cruel to say that, but it's not the fact. I think it's not the fact of being able to communicate is to want to communicate. Yes. You need to. To want to be out there and to put yourself out in front. You're basically naked. You are with your feelings. And you show everything. Yeah. And you show everything. That's the only way to go. Go through someone that is watching you. Particularly if someone that's never seen opera. You're very, very exposed. And if you're not comfortable with that, it's, you know, it's not for you. You give everything from within you because you are the instrument. So it's huge, demanding, and a lifetime commitment. Now, the next song we're gonna listen to is Pala Piupiano from the Godfather. Pala pupiano means Spanish. Speak more quite softly. Do you remember which moment of the movie that come? Is it just maybe when they're dancing, when there's the wedding? Or perhaps not. I can't quite remember. Okay. But it's. It's again, something which I've chosen, which is quite close to me, which is the Italian. There's passion there. It's the passion, Sicilian passion, which I'm from the south of Italy, so I associate with that quite. Yeah. Let's listen then to the Godfather. Parlo Piopiano. Sa. Sa. For your sincerity. And this was Marisa di Moro with the main theme song from the Godfather, Bar Lapio piano. We will be back after a short break. Welcome to women's radio station. Welcome back to future Classic Women Awards on Women's Radio Station. Our guest today is Marissa Di Mora, an Italian opera singer based in the uk. In Kent we've been talking about all your beautiful compositions and your relationship between opera and crossing over and ballet. Now it's time for the odd questions. So do you have any strange hobby to free your mind or relax? I love photography. Oh, beautiful. Yes. On my walk. I love walking countryside and taking photographs. Absolutely love that. Fantastic. That's a special relax, isn't it? Yeah. And do you have any ritual or superstitions before going on stage? Not really, no. I try not to, no. That's clever. I would say that's clever. You don't have fear, you know, of colors. Like you shouldn't wear purple when you go on stage. No. In order to. If anything I would wear, you know, in Italy. Yeah, in Italy is a strong thing about purple colors as it is. I think they told me in France it's the green color. You shouldn't be wearing green. Well, I love green and yes. Yeah, pretty difficult. Any embarrassing moment or funny moment that you can recall of. Well, I on stage or going to sing at the concert and I was supposed to have the score with me. The music didn't have it. Oh, no way. So we had to. Within time we had to change the piece. Oh really? So the. The one of the baritones had to accompany me to well known aria which he knew how to accompany that music. Oh wow. From Mario Figarozert. So. Yes. Oh gosh, it happens. And what's your next project or recording or collaboration? Collaborations again, variety of everything. Just like you're hearing in my recordings. There's a little bit of everything. There will be collaboration with the rapper. Oh. Oh wow. I have the track ready and I'm putting together the lyrics and we're needing a rapper. So you're gonna. It's your own lyrics. You're writing the lyrics. My own lyrics? Yes, the. The music is ready, it's been recorded. I have the chorus line and I need a rapper to sing the. Yes, that's right, the lyrics. So there's that. Obviously I'll be doing recitals in London and again, if anybody to. To follow me through my Facebook page or through the agency, Talent Music Agency to be updated things I'm doing Dancing Moon, the video with choreography by Valentino Zucchetti and the ballet ballet dancers from the Royal Opera House, Katharina Nikolski and Leo Dixie. That will be coming out very short in the next month, so it has to be shared as much as possible. Absolutely. Please do. Absolutely. Are you going to perform that live somewhere with the dancer? Maybe. I don't know. Possibly. If there is the opportunity, yes. If they're on large stage, then yes. Or festivals. I have already performed it just by myself for fashion show on the catwalk. Wow. And how was that? Yeah, they loved it. That was another scary moment because I had never performed it live. And to be throwing at the audience my style of singing with something that they never heard before. I don't know if it gets any more daring than that. Absolutely. That's amazing. Yeah. And then obviously something else which will be coming up will be my book to be published and which explains all my journey. Is that a biography? Yes, a little bit like that. Yes, that's right. The title, so we can look for it. I have changed the title, to be honest with you, so I don't want to say the title in case I do change it again. All right. Okay. So. Because it's not published yet, so it's not a novel. It's. No, it's just Marisa di Muro and my journey as a singer and as a person in this life and hope to be of inspiration to other people. But the other thing which I am doing with this book, I will also record an original piece at Acapella and that will be attached to the book. So whoever buys the book can download free of charge. So they can also hear my voice. Just my voice, no accompaniment. I see something of mine that's. That's very impressive. We will be looking forward to that. Okay. Do you know. Do you have any time scale? Can you tell us when can we expect the book to be out? Well, it was supposed to have been finished last year, if I could tell you that. So now I'm saying it has to be this year. I'm aiming for this year because I would like to launch and my agency is securing some TV time to do that. So there are various things coming about, exciting and exploring other venues with music through music. And that is what I have evolved more as a artist. 360 degrees. Absolutely. Wonderful. Well, let's finish our interview with Rejoic from Endel Messiah with Marisa Di Muro. Sa. Savior. Peace. Unto the. Sa. How beautiful this was. Rejoice from Handel's Messiah with Marisa di Muro.
