Hello and welcome to future Classical Woman Awards with me, Stefania Passamonte on women's radio station. This is a new program where we searched for the most amazing new female artists on the classical panorama. Good morning everybody. I would like to talk to you about this show why we decided to shine a light on the upcoming new amazing leading ladies on classical music. We will be interviewing the most exciting new talent on the British panorama and international of classical music. And we're going to have the most different instruments you can think of have marimba player, we're going to have violinist, poly instrumentalist, pianist, trio groups. And finally the most coveted new woman radio station amazing mug to brighten up your days. This show was born after an interview about my next project with Elena Mattson. This is something about. It's a play, one woman play on Clara Schumann. Clara Schumann was one of the most amazing concert pianists of the 19th century. She was also a composer, but she was the wife of one of the most famous composers of the Romantic era, Robert Schumann. And people rumored that she was also the lover of another amazing composer, Johan Brahms. She was a working woman, she was a concert pianist and she had to provide for the whole family while the husband actually ended up mental asylum quite young. He died at 46. And by herself she had to, you know, work and maintain seven kids. And this is something that relates to working women today and in particular classical musicians. Because we have to tour, we have to go and leave the family. It's hard to make relationships sometimes because, you know, you're not, you need to dedicate 100% of your life on the, on the job. And that's what we're going to discover with the guest that we are inviting to the show. We want to show that actually classical musicians and classical music is a work like any other. We're all, you know, women trying to, you know, have a private life and also have a very inspiring talent that can bring Joy and inspiration to so many other women in the world, not only in classical music, but in any job you might be doing. So it's a great opportunity to bring women in classical music up to today and to see. To discover how actually being a classical musician is a job like any other, where you struggle with going to the recording studio or teaching or doing a rehearsal with the orchestra, with the trio, with, you know, going to radio for interviews is all part of, you know, an everyday life that we are going to discover together. So myself, I'm a concert pianist, I'm a recording artist. I actually own a record label, an indie classical record label. And I also founded a music academy. So I have professors that teaches for me. It's called London Piano Masters. And we organize international masterclasses where we get students coming from everywhere around the world. And what I get my teachers and myself when I teach my students always is to explain them that classical music is made, first of all of passion and secondary of a desire to share our passion with the audience, with the audience, with other students, with whoever is around us that is listening to us. The moment that we are playing the music as well, the music that we choose, when we are playing it, when we are performing, it has always a special meaning to us. Not just playing Bach or Brahms or Chopin or anything, just because it's beautiful music, but also because it means something to us. When we play, we are speaking in notes, and that something is a universal language that anybody can understand. When you're angry, when you're in love, when you're happy, when you're sad, there is some amazing ironical music by Beethoven that really make you laugh when you're playing it. And. And Clara Schumann, for example, the music that you heard at the beginning of the show. And that will be the soundtrack of our future Classical Woman awards. It's in particular a song that has been composed by Clara Ford Brahms. So you can hear the passion on it. It sort of determined the anguish about going out with Brahms. He had been asking for a date for a long time and she is about to. And she's thinking, yes, I should, because anyway, I'm still young, I'm still beautiful. She's widow already at the time when she composed this romance for Brahms. But then there is all the gossips, you know, the people saying Brahms is too young. So she already the precursor of the Toyota boy, if you want. Brahms was beautiful with blonde curly hair, can you imagine? And she was madly in love for him with his talent and everything. But at the same time, she was a mother, she had seven kids and she wanted to keep touring. And at the time it was hard, you know, to do two things. So you can really hear the modern woman in this music. And there is a surprise in the middle part after all this passion and anguish that is going up and down suddenly is relaxed. And the relaxation, you know, they exchanged letters and people were gossiping, they were together. And this is always denied that they were just friends, but somehow they were, you know, dedicating each other music. And she was the one always playing his music first. And he wrote, there is few notes that came out of him writing about how he couldn't wait to be with her, how darling she was to him. The middle part of this amazing romance that we chose as the soundtrack of our future classical woman awards is actually suddenly the beauty and relaxation after the mad love that was going between the two. And at the end of this section there is a last line that is actually taken from Schumann from the Carnival. So it's sort of thinking after basically, you know, saying, okay, I give up, I can be yours. Because I'm first of all a woman. Before being concert pianist, before being a composer, before being a mother, I'm actually a woman. There is actually in the end the human, her husband coming back to her mind. And so the. This amazing loving section is interrupted and we go back to the anguish and they finish. I think you can guess how it finished from listening the piece all the way till the end. You see, Clara was quite clever. She asked Brahms when she was at the end of her life to destroy all the letters that they've been exchanging. Because, you know, it was probably written inside, you know, things that we were not supposed to know about their love. And she died quite a good age, quite an advanced age. And he died six months later. So that's another, you know, proof that it was true love. But, you know, they destroyed all the letters so that no one would know that actually would have a proof that actually they have been, you know, lovers. But music doesn't lie. Sa. Sa. Hello and welcome back to future Classical Women Awards with me Stefania Passamonte on women's radio station program where we search for for the most amazing new female artist on the classical panorama. We were talking about Clara Schumann, about her music. You heard her amazing romance for Brahms. We will hear later a romance about her husband Robert Schumann. Robert Schumann was one of the most amazing composer of the romantic period together with Chopin and at least they were all the three born in 1810 and 1810 listed just one year later. And I love checking about their zodiacal sign. People don't believe in it but actually, you know, it's happened to me to meet people of, you know, different sign and then finding out that is quite remarkably similar in their character and in their experience. It all started with my very first theory lesson at the conservatory and my teacher had a big passion about the zodiac and the first question he asked to all the class was what's your zodiacal sign? So my sign is Libra. Everybody was species like Chopin and many other famous musicians and the teacher was like well Stefania, I'm sorry but there is no classical musicians who are Libra. Libra is not designed for classical music. And then he says well I'll go and inform myself, I'll check out and then come back to you. So he came back with me and the list was pretty good. So Liszt was Libra like me. So born in October and actually shared my birthday with Glenn Gould. That is one of the most famous classical pianists of the 21st century and 20th century. And Pavarotti and a passion of Libra is actually to make classical music popular. Pavarotti was one of the very first one to bring opera out to the big audience and to make it popular. And that what made the big success of all these new crossover that are part of the 21st century music and that we heard so much at the Classic Blitz Awards, for example. And Liszt as well was very famous for making the music. For making the music, the piano music in particular. Finally as strong as the opera. He was the very first one who managed to get a full opera house. The Scala in Milan for just one solo concert with the 12 transcendental studies. I did record the 12 transcendental studies. It was my second album as you know, show off really to say I can do it. At the time there were no women who would play those pieces because Liszt was an amazingly good looking man, very tall, with big hand. And he wrote the piano music for his hands, you know, to push it at the extreme. And so women were not considered at the time, at least not when I was studying, you know, strong enough, big enough. I don't have for sure the hand as big as Liszt. Actually friends made me notice that my hand is exactly the same as the one of Chopin. So. So there is the Calquez hand in Mallorca. That is where he composed the preludes when he was very sick before dying. And actually yeah, we do have the same crypto third finger going to the left for example. And the same exact size of the fingers. And that's quite interesting because actually Chopin is one of my favorite composers where I can feel more comfortable with that looks really written for my hand. When I was a student I've been studying with some of the greatest piano teacher in the world. I've been studying Royal Academy of Music. I've been studying in Paris at the Col Normale. I was even invited to Juilliard. But then in the end they didn't have the money for a full scholarship that they promised me. But it ended up better because I stayed in London. And what I learned for the first time was actually that I didn't have to run after the sound made by the very famous concert pianist. Men men concert pianist. So before really the 21st century, mainly the panorama was nominated by was dominated by male concert musicians. Concert artists and women were not supposed already at the time of Clara were not supposed to to tour and to make a career out of music performing because you had to leave the family home, you have to leave the kids home, you had to leave the husband for touring, you couldn't travel with everybody. And also the main composer were men writing for their hands or for their strength and everything. And either you were as strong as them or you were not as good. So they didn't care. They were, you know, thinking about how fast you can go, how strong you can play. It's a bit like, you know, doing the hundred meters against a Usain Bolt. Of course, he's tall, two meters, and he has a super long leg and he's a man. And there is no way a woman can be as fast and as strong as him. And something I embraced at Royal Academy of Music that, thanks to my teacher, Christopher Elton, I had to embrace what I was. So until then, I was trying to compete against men, I was trying to play as fast, as strong as them. And then I realized I had something else. I'm a woman, and so I have a different sensibility, I have a different view on the music, I have a different way of playing. My voice is different. And that's what we have to work on, that's what we have to push on. That's what we have to show everybody that is as important as, as beautiful as, if not even more sometimes. And so that's why I got inspired by doing this amazing new program on the women's radio station, Future of Classical Women Awards. This is something that's very dear to me and I hope it will be there to you as well. This is something that comes from my heart and to go to your heart has to come from the heart of our amazing female instrumentalist, amazing female artist. And it's not just because they are female, but because they're amazing artists. They're amazing artists, unique artists. And that's what we want to hear, that's what we're searching for. So talking about the transcendental studies by Liszt, we're going to listen now to this etude number 10. This is called Appassionata, and I think it represents quite well my way of thinking about music and my way of trying to present it to the audience. And this is actually a piece in the old collection that made me to be finally recognized internationally and gave me the opportunity to be part of the Recording Academy in America for the Grammys Awards. So every year my. My new recording compete in the best Classical Album and best Classical Soloist, and then later on to be in the committee for the Classic Blitz Awards. We are going to touch also some hot argument of the moment like the MeToo movement that just happened in America and it looks already going a bit away when it should be quite strong and alive because this is something that happens everywhere, not only music, but in any work environment. And so we're going to talk about gender equality both in the composers, in the performance and we are going to have a space for the questions from the audience.
