Hello and welcome to Talking Travel, your weekly women radio stations travel show for travel tips, inspiration, fascinating guests and answers to all your burning travel questions with myself, Kay. Now, in previous episodes, we've been all around the world. We've been to Buenos Aires, we've been to Athens, we've been to Rwanda. But this week we're staying much closer to home. In fact, we're staying in the capital and. And we're off to Brixton. Yes, Brixton. True. Let's face facts. If we're talking about which London boroughs to visit, we probably wouldn't put Lambeth at the top of the list. But listeners, you'd be wrong for while Kensington and Chelsea, they have a certain picturesque charm, East London isn't without its appeal, but when it's all said and done, they are. Well, London liked. A little bit vanilla, if you like. If you want to see the real London, the capital in all its magical multicultural glory, you need to look to Lambeth. And the acme of Lambeth is Brixton. Now, I'm a little biased because I moved to Brixton a couple of weeks ago and have fallen head over heels for the South London neighbourhood. I'm loving the diversity. David Bowie was born in Brixton. Robert former Prime Minister John Major grew up here and Singhala Ru still lives in the area where West Indian food stalls sit beside Shishi bars. And despite the fact that Foxton's that estate agent we all love to loathe, has opened a branch in Brixton. And there's a rumour there's a Waitrose on the way. The area's strong sense of community still remains intact, but don't just take my word for it, listen to what other locals have to say. Hi, my name is Malik Menad. But if you are planning on paying Brixton a visit, be warned, the South London neighbourhood isn't about sightseeing. You're not going to find blockbuster sites such as Buckingham palace and Big Ben here. And if you see the point of the National Trust, you should probably turn back now. Brixton rather is all about exploring, wandering the back street, stopping for a coffee, eating a long late lunch and staying out, drinking and dancing until 3, if not 4 5am yes, the residents of Brixton are a lively lot, so I'm going to give you a little primer on where to see and stay and go in Brixton. But before we do that, let's enjoy a song. As I mentioned, David Bowie was born in Brixton. So here's Bowie with the classic let's dance. Put on your red shoes and dance the blue. That was David Bowie with let's Dance. So back to our Brixton guide. We're going to divide this into four sections and first up is the Culture section. For all you culture vultures, you'll be happy to know that cultural and entertainment options abound in Brixton. It's simply a matter of choosing your pleasure among the many restaurants, live music venues and trendy bars. Make no mistake, boredom is most definitely not an option. If you're a film fan, I'd recommend the Ritzy Cinema. It's arguably one of the best cinemas south of the river. It has about five screens and it also boasts a bar and upstairs cafe, which always has something interesting going on, from exhibitions to live music. I popped in on Easter Sunday and there was a fabulous reggae concert in full steam. Beyond the Ritzy, the Windmill is also worth a look. It's a tiny venue, the capacity is a mere 150 people, and it's located in a back street off Brixton Hill, near Brixton's actual windmill, the only one in South London. And it was voted one of the best live music venues in the capital by Time out magazine, no less. But if jazz is more your bag, the Ephra is where it's at. The venue may look a little tired and tatty outside, but don't be disturbed. Step inside and you'll find lots of Brixton locals coming together to enjoy live jazz seven nights a week. Now, next tip is food. Brixton has always been a fantastic place for food, but particularly in the last four years. This is when empty market stalls were leased for free in Brixton Village to encourage new restaurateurs. The result? The original Caribbean cookware stalls. Brixton's always been the place to get your Caribbean plantain fix. They've been joined by bakeries, delightful delis, artisan coffee shops, Mexican joints, Thai spots. I could Recommend a few like Yumdee. It's a great Thai place. And Federation Coffee serves a fabulous flat white. But really half the fun is taking a chance on any place you like the look of tip number three top shops Brixton Market is a shopper's paradise. It's brimming with fun to browse boutiques. We like Brixie. It's the brainchild of Brixton local Emmy and it's where you'll find loads of funky furnishings. Alternatively, look to Leftover that's full of fabulous French vintage finds. And other standouts include Saloon, which specializes in catwalk style for a fraction of the prices. And if you're a fan of sweets. Who isn't? Check out Sweet Tooth, which sells, as the name suggests, a sumptuous array of sweet treats. If you're in need of a sugar hit in between browsing and then tip four, our final tip is for after dark. Now Brixton is home to tons and tons of bars, more bars than you can shake a stick at. But it's also got one of my favorites, a champagne bar. Take a bow. Champagne and fromage. This was opened by a husband and wife team to mixed reactions a few years ago. The critics claim that champagne and fromage isn't in keeping with Brixton's character. Bubble doesn't belong in Brixton. THEY BLEAT but fans counter that Champagne and Fromage is at least an independent outlet, so not another all bar one. And its opening has created, of course, a few much needed jobs. After a couple of drinks, my suggestion is to make a beeline for the Brixton Academy. This alternates between hosting global superstars and hedonistic club nights into the wee small hours. The Academy has a 6am license, but other options include the always buzzing Plan B, the electric Brixton. And as producer James in the Studio has pointed out, Brixton is home to so many reggae spots, so you can definitely get your reggae fix in SW9. So that's my guide to Brixton.
