Hello and welcome to future Classic Woman awards with me, Stefania Passamonte on women's radio station program where we search for the most amazing new female artist on the classic panorama. Today on future Classic Woman Awards, we will be talking to Catherine Rudge, one of the most promising mezzo soprano of the British young generation. Catherine is currently a BBC Radio 3 new generation artist. And the critic who heard her recently singing says that her voice is like a punished caramel, rich in color and harmonies. Hi there. Hi, Catherine. Well, Katherine, today is not in the woman radio station. She's in Liverpool, right? Yes, I'm up in Liverpool at the moment. I'm in the middle of a week of rehearsals for concerts up in the northwest. Fantastic. Where are you going to play tomorrow? I'm at Uppermill at the summer music festival there, which is near Manchester. And then I go over to Buxton to perform in a recital there for a lovely festival over in Buxton. Wonderful. So, Catherine, you made your debut. I read from your. Well, I know from your amazing career at the London Coliseum in the role of Cherubino and Mozart, the Marriage of Figaro. Right? Yeah. And then since then you've been, you know, singing Sesto in Giulio Cesare, Anno in La Clemenza di Tito, Cherubino in Leonozzi di Figaro, Carmen Rosina in the Barber of Sevilla. So I wanted to ask you, do you have a favorite role? I think Cherubino will always be really a special role because it was my first role I performed, making my debut and it was actually one of the roles I even prepared as a student. So it was a real dream come true to finish my studies at college and then be able to perform that on the London Coliseum and have that opportunity. So it will always be such a special role. But I think the female roles as well are. Rosina was just fantastic to sing the Rossini and calm and I mean, she's. She's such a wonderful character. So I really, I get immersed in whichever role I'm doing at the time, but they'll always be very special. Wow. So do you have any dream role that you didn't sing yet, for example? I think I'd love to perform more Rossini. Chenarentala is the role I'd like to. I've always loved the story since I was a little girl, so that would be lovely. And plus, it's a very funny operation, isn't it? Yes. The humor as well, and lots of fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I. I know that you've been you know, rising star of classical music 2012 from the time you've been featured there and you are nominated young artist for the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and recently you're actually been appointed in the ambassadorial role of Honorary Associate Artist of the Royal Northern College of Music. So what would you say about this particular, you know, role? Well, it's a really great honor to be affiliated with the college. That really was a massive part of my journey in becoming an opera singer and leading to a professional career. So anything I can do now to give back really to those students or to help spread the word about the wonderful work they do is a great honour. So it's something that's so important to me and I feel really thrilled to have that continuing relationship with the Royal Northern College of Music. Wonderful, wonderful. So I wanted to ask you about your upcoming album. I know you are releasing a new one in September with some. It's the Elgar Orchestral Songs, right? Yes, it is, with the BBC Concert Orchestra. So what can you tell me about this recording? Well, they wrote a beautiful collection of songs that I've always loved to compose are El Ghar and I really enjoyed singing his sea pictures and a couple of works with PI. I used to put those into recitals. And then it's been a great privilege to really hear from the Elgar Society and read the books of Michael Kennedy about Elgar. So somehow Elgar has been a composer that I've always really been inspired by. And so when I was asked by the BBC Concert Orchestra and SOM Records to record some of his lesser known songs, I was just thrilled, really. And so they're coming out in September and it's just wonderful even to perform some of the songs I was originally doing with piano, now with the full orchestration and to hear the instruments. And Elgar just writes so wonderfully for the whole ensemble. So I can't wait for them to come out. So which song would you like us to hear first? I'd love if Pleading was a song you could play. That's one of my favorites. And what's about. What is the song about? Well, it's a song really, that's got reflection in it and memories of somebody. I think at the heart of it really is is love. And they're basically wishing for to be with somebody again and that person makes them feel as though they were. They tend their night today. Does it have any special meaning to you? It does, really. I mean, whenever I'm singing, I often think of people in my life and I associated. So I always put a personal connection. I think that's so important with music when we're communicating things that you feel from your heart really. And so I often think of my dad because he I lost him to blood cancer and he. He was ill throughout my studies for singing and so so much a part of all of my whole family are really but he's somebody I think of when when I hear this song. That's beautiful. Today we are talking to Catherine Trudge, one of the most promising mezzo soprano of the young generation. Catherine is currently a BBC Radio 3 new generation artist. So Catherine and I noticed, I mean I know that you won a lot of awards that includes recently the David Robertson Arts and Culture Awards. What was that about? The Arts and Culture award was from Merseyside Woman of the Year which is back home in Liverpool. And I was really proud on behalf of our community here in Liverpool. We have a choir and a young singer and we're really passionate about making live music accessible for anybody really that wants to take part and enjoy, get involved with the concerts and things. And so they, they were really kind to, to acknowledge that and we're just thrilled to have received it. And it really is down to all of the community members here that make it really work. And it's one of my favorite sharing music with people and family and friends. So you know, that's a big passion of mine. That's a passion of mine too, really. It's a very great thing. I also noticed that among the prizes and awards that you got, you got the Kathleen Ferrier bursary and Kathleen Ferrier, she was just nominated as woman of the year. She got an awards for her career 100 years at the latest Classic Brits Awards. Do you look at any artist of the moment in particular, you know, as an inspiration for your career, something that you know, someone that you admire particularly? Yeah, I mean we're so lucky now that we can access so many artists. And Kathleen Ferrier from Young for me was a bit big inspiration. She was the first singer that I had the chance to listen to on a CD before I even knew what an English song was and that whole genre. And so she was a big inspiration. And actually the recital I'm doing tomorrow is a tribute to Kathleen Ferrier and we've got some of the members of the Kathleen Ferrier Society are going to be there and it's just a really thrilled to get some of her repertoire together and feel as though we're following in her footsteps and paying tribute to all of the wonderful work she so generously really, you know, gave to us through her dedication to Music and but of singers today there are so many. I love mezzo sopranos obviously because I can really relate to them and love hearing different repertoire. And Janet, Jane, Janet Bake was a big sort of person who I listened to and I had the wonderful opportunity to work with her just briefly really as part of my time with the young classical artist Trust. And it was just great to have the insight of somebody with such a wealth of experience and knowledge really of the music and the text and the composers. So I'm always enjoying whoever's around and about really and you know, performing in this genre of music. So if you had to give an advice to a young inspiring singer, student or yourself, you know, going, looking back at your career, what would that be? I would always say follow your dream because from young I knew I always wanted in some way shape or form to perform but I never quite knew how I would get there. And I think just by following your dreams and your passion really you manage to meet some of the most amazing people and friends and start creating together. And so as long as you always keep sight really of the reasons and why you started all of the hard work and the dedication that you have to put into it obviously to like any talent would need, it becomes really worthwhile because you get so much back from it and the audiences really are, you know, my biggest friends in a way. I love to meet audiences and hear from people who've heard a song for the first time or it's a great privilege to do what we, we do, which is as an artist to communicate and explore emotions and, and text and, and, and so I always think, you know, follow your heart and then you'll, you'll find within that so much more from it. Absolutely. No, I totally agree with you, totally agree with you. I have a question. I checked, you know, I was, I was looking at your CV and I see you've been singing and recording a lot with the BBC, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with BBC Concept orchestra. You recorded operas and you've made a lot of live broadcasts actually with BBC Radio 3. Would you prefer to sing life or recording? And if I think that I completely love both to be honest. And recording is something that has come later on in my career to where I first started was always. And I was performing little recitals from when I was about 16 so it wasn't until my late 20s I got the chance to start really recording things properly. And I love the live performances for the audiences and the chance to really be able to communicate face to face with people and explore characters and operas and things. But I think recordings are a really personal chance to explore a bit deeper and maybe reach people who haven't seen you live before. And, and I really, really have enjoyed the whole process of recording and just having the luxury of time to spend with conductors and orchestra players and musicians. It's just a great process. So I wouldn't be without either now. I don't think I've loved it all. Why do you like it so much? What is that about? The Sleepy Lagoon is. Is really just the most beautiful song and many people may know it from the the Radio for Desert island disc theme tune but it's. It's a wonderful piece of music and Eric Coates is perhaps best known for his compositions orchestras but this is a. His songs. He's done some amazing songs and, and this is definitely one of his best. Wonderful. Let's listen to it then. Today we are talking to Katherine Roach, one of the most promising mezzo of the young generation. Katherine was BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2017. Kathryn, during your residency with BBC Radio 3, I noticed that you recorded the Sound of Shakespeare live with the world premiere of Roxanavsky Panieufnik. Love Salt. What can you tell us about this recording? Oh, I had a fantastic experience really as a next generation artist and recording the new composition by Roxanna was a really wonderful opportunity to explore a Shakespeare text and she set it to music specifically for my voice and viola. And then we had the great honor of performing it live on the radio as a world premiere and we made a video for it. And so really the whole project had lots of of brand new experiences for me. It was really amazing to see how she worked as a composer and brought out the text and the whole thing was just great. So it's a wonderful souvenir really of the entire time as a new generation artist. Yeah. So what would you think about women composers? There is not that many at the moment. I mean there is more coming. Yes, I think Roxanne is doing an amazing job and it's fantastic whenever you find, you know, somebody who you can, you can work with who is a woman who's composing and hopefully we will in time sort of readdress that balance because many of the composers obviously who we often turn to are well known male. But I think, you know, as long as music is, is reaching people, whoever it comes from, it's Wonderful that, you know, we can give these new composers the platform. Really? Absolutely. Yeah. I totally agree with you. Okay, so time for, you know, some more detailed question or your. Your career, for example, what would you say was the most challenging moment in your career or the worst moment, if you have any. I think that there's challenges of your career. Probably the most challenging are when things are happening in your personal life because music is so emotive and we explore, you know, really hard subject matters. Sometimes I don't think there's a job job quite like it. When you're involved with the art, you know, you go into work and then you can be in an opera rehearsal and within, you know, half an hour, you'll be doing a scene with someone that might maybe really intimate or maybe a really funny scene, or you exploring a love story or really tragic stories. And if something is happening in your life as a human being while that's going on, like I mentioned earlier, you know, my dad was, was. Was sick for a long time. So you're trying to all the time address that balance within yourself so that you have enough energy and compassion for everyone else who's. Or they're all doing a job as well, and the resource really to be able to. To do what we do, which is give such a lot. You know, I always sing from my heart, really. So you have to make sure that when, when you. Or you have your downtime, you deal with all of those emotions and that roller coaster ride that is life itself, you know, before you embark on the journey of trying to portray someone else's roller coaster in an opera. So it's always, I think the biggest thing is that challenge is always just keeping the balance right. You said something very, very, very true, very deep about the opera and being a roller coaster of emotion as well. Through the opera. Would you say the messages in the opera are still up to date or. There are some operas that are more, you know, up to date than other. For example. Sorry, what did you say? There are more like, if there is any opera among the one that you've been singing that you like, that give a message that is still quite modern. For example. Yeah, yeah. Recently, I mean, we did Dun Giovanni. And, you know, you can clearly see the message in the opera is so relevant to modern day. We have the MeToo movement happening at the moment. And really, you know, watching that whole. In fact, the director in our opera had a sign, this was this year, he had a sign where somebody held up just the Me Too sign to sort of, you know, make it, bring it really more relevant for today. And I think immediately it resonates with audiences and just. It is amazing to think of how long ago they were written, but they're still so relevant today. Yeah, totally. I so agree with you. And what do you think about the crossover opera that is quite going on at the moment? What do I think of, Sorry, crossover, You know, the popularization of opera area, for example, what Bocelli is doing, Pavarotti was doing first, you know, of making opera to be more accessible for the younger generation. I think it's so important that we do anything we can to really keep music in its most authentic form, the wonderful tradition that it is, whilst also reaching out to wider audiences, audiences in any way that we can to bring them in towards this amazing art form. I didn't have a clue about opera when I was young. I knew I wanted to sing. I just didn't know how big my voice was going to be and I was going to be able to be a part of operas. I hadn't even, you know, dreamt that this whole world existed. So I really know that journey from a young girl to now being a part of it, and I really wouldn't be without it. And the amount of joy you can get from it, the lessons you can learn from it, the emotions you explore and just the whole craft of it. When you look at singers and you see the power of a voice, you can hear across the big orchestra, the wonderful set. And we're so lucky that we have these legends of opera to kind of look to and keep spreading that message really, as far and wide as we can. Okay, so now can I ask you some odd questions? For example, do you have any ritual or superstition before going on stage? Do I have any. I'm sorry, I can't hear. Do you have any ritual or superstition before going on? Yeah, I probably always. I mean, apart from the normal things of really staying hydrated and those kinds of things, which are just general maintenance things. The thing is, my ritual is always probably to say a prayer before I go on, because I've always associated singing really with my faith and. And I feel, you know, it is a gift and I just always say a prayer before I go on that you can do the best you can with that gift. And so it's always reassuring before I walk on to do that. That's very beautiful. And do you have any strange opposite to free your mind or relax? I think my strange hobby is probably drawing. I'm a really big doodler And I love when I'm home I have watercolors and ink drawings and so I paint a lot. But when I'm sort of on the road, I pack all those, my pens and pencils up and I'm often sketching so that really does relax me. And apart from that, I like spiritual sports and football is a big passion of mine. I have followed my home team, Liverpool since I was little, so I'll always be following them. Wherever I am. I'll be catching up on what the score is as a football game. Wonderful. I'm a big fan of football as well. And with the World cup going on. Yes, it's a big, a big, big day today. I know, I know.
