Hello and welcome to Future Classic Women Awards with me, Stefania Passamonte, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists on the classical panorama. Today I'm very excited to reveal the winner of the Opera section of Future Classic Women Awards. But before I tell you who she is, I would like to listen to a first piece of today's interview and let you guess who she might be. Non voglio morìr. Non voglio morìr. I don't wanna die. I don't wanna die. So this was Sola Perduta e Abbandonata from Puccini's opera Manon Lescaut. With Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the winner of Future Classic Women Awards, Katerina Mina! Stefania! Hello, Katerina! Hi! I'm so, so thrilled. I am so happy. I'm ecstatic. I'm over the moon and I'm just so thankful to be in this position. And this is amazing. I mean, you were competing with such fantastic artists, honestly. It's true. Where were you when you received the news? Actually, when I received the news, I was at a party, a really amazing party, an important party at Leslie MacLeod Miller's residence. He's a very important patron of the arts, and I was performing at this party. So it was great to receive this news. And you had to keep it secret because that's the thing. I know, how to keep it a secret. I mean, how did you go back on stage to say, I cannot tell you, but— Yeah, I didn't say actually anything. It just helped me with my performance. I was so excited and thrilled. So what does it mean to win? Of course, it's apart from all these feelings I have. It's very, very important for me to know that, you know, I am the winner of this first edition of the Future Women Classic Awards and of the women's radio station. It's a very important station in London. Pretty much everyone I speak to about the station, by the way, know. Ah, fantastic. Yes, it's very, very, very interesting. Thank you, listeners. Yes. And for me, and of course, because it represents something about women, you know, that's the other thing. And I'm a very big believer in women and their powers. So I'm very happy, extremely happy and thankful to you and everybody, of course, who voted. For me, played my interview, liked, shared. There was a lot of activity, and I'm very, very thankful to all my followers. That is amazing. So the winner was decided between the airplay that we had live when we were airing your interview and the SoundCloud and Instagram and the social media and everything. Yes. Um, what do you think about the importance of social media today in classical music? Yes, I think it's actually very powerful platforms, the social media, all social media, especially Instagram. For me, it works very well, Instagram. Facebook is coming up now, I understand, because of the merge, how Instagram— Facebook bought Instagram. So, you know, they're competing more, which is nice. For me, when I went to the States, and I spent a lot of time about 2 years ago and I realized how big Instagram is, I came back and I started seriously working on my account and it's giving me very, very good results. I've had amazing interviews globally in also magazines and publications that are very, very important and big. So do you think social media, you know, sometimes they are demonized in a way, they're actually a good part of reaching out more for classical music. Absolutely. To a wider audience, maybe. Yes, the social media is actually a good part for reaching out in general, especially then in classical music when we need more audiences coming in that are not only the older age category, you know, of audience. When we need younger people to reach and go closer to classical music, social media is the number one that will bring them together. We see all big stars, operatic stars. We also see all the opera houses around the world, how well they work on their social media. And I hear every day from also the artistic directors of these organizations, some of them that I'm linked in, in this country, for instance, how important it is and how well it works for them. The promotion they do and the marketing through the social media. Absolutely. Now, why did you choose Puccini as the first aria of today? Yes, you know, when they called me and passed on the news and said, we need 4 tracks from you immediately, I thought it would be nice to start with a track that I would love to play as a role. And Manon Lescaut, written by Puccini, is definitely one of the top 5 operas I want to play. Plus, I adore Puccini's music, and I thought it would be a very good representative to start the interview of your vocal abilities and passion. Absolutely. And so, Sola Perduta Abbandonata, it means alone, lost. Yes, let's go. This is the last act, her last aria. Just before she dies, really. She's on exile and she's been, you know, accused of being a prostitute. And this is really her last cry. She really wants to go from this life. And it's a very, very powerful aria. You can tell the power of the woman in it also. Absolutely. That comes totally with it. It's not easy for someone to say, I want to die. No. You have to have a strength. In order to, to be ready to go. And as well, I mean, life is part of— death is part of life, isn't it? It's part of the cycle. Fantastic. Well, we will be back after a short break. Welcome back to Future Classic Women Awards on Women's Radio Station, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists on the classical panorama. Today our very special guest is the winner of the Opera section of Future Classic Women Awards, soprano Katerina Mina. Katerina, we were talking about, you know, winning this competition. How important is it for an opera singer to compete? I suppose it's the first thing, whether we like it or not, that comes into our mind when we enter a profession in the performing arts, when you know that you're actually competing. All the time with other singers who are equally good as you and better other times. Sometimes you have to compete also with singers that are not so good, but for other reasons are going somewhere with their careers. And, you know, there's also this internal fight in these situations because, yes, you're also competing with the fact that it is sometimes an unfair business, you know, and the market is not so straightforward and the way to the top is not so straightforward. At the same time, as a performer, yes, we have to enter competitions, actual competitions as opera singers, and there's no actually other way to start off the career for a young singer other than entering competitions. Stressful, but it's also rewarding if you are doing well and you're going through to the next rounds. And so I remember when I started off exactly like this, I entered two international singing competitions and I was lucky to be in the winners. In this case, of course, this competition is different in the way that it is based also on the audience involvement. And but of course, it's a competition because we know how many hundreds of entries there were, right, for the awards. And I'm just thrilled that I am in this position to be the winner. Absolutely. And there was one thing you mentioned, the fact that sometimes people that they don't deserve as much on the technical side of it, they still still manage to go through with their career for other reasons. Maybe I've noticed with the social media and this visual part of the aspect of classical music that is really taking over, and in opera even more, that sometimes that's making a choice between the look of the singer is making— Absolutely. So the image, as you say, is becoming becoming the number one factor actually in all the performing arts. And but to be honest, to see how much this is taking over in the classical world and the opera world, it can be overwhelming because, you know, you get pictures nowadays on Instagram of opera singers who can be actually half naked, you know, and but these are the pictures that get the most likes. And the most attention. So we have to be a little careful, I think. There's always a fine line in everything we do. And yes, social media is taking over. Yes, everyone can promote themselves and become number one in their mind. You know, we have also— you have so many bloggers that are able to do this for themselves and promote themselves in such a way and become someone. And sometimes through their social media alone, these bloggers, they become someone without having the actual base. Feels, yeah, so judging so properly. Exactly. So I'm saying that it's, it's, it's a wonderful position to be in, the fact that we can all promote ourselves to the extent that we want on social media. On the other side, on the other hand, there has to be a fine line. We have to draw a line at some point. Fantastic. The, the next song you want to play today is Leonore Zaria from Beethoven's opera Fidelio. The word— the title is, um, 'You Monster, Where Will You Go?' And there is a beautiful line where he say, um, that through, um, ira and anger, um, surge like ocean waves in your hearts, but a rainbow on my path still shine, which brightly rest on somber clouds. Yes, I will explain, uh, all this. I chose this aria. I love it, first of all. It's in German. I also have an affinity in singing in German. And of course, Fidelio is Beethoven's only opera. So I thought, you know, it's nice to show something from a composer which is more instrumental, to show what he can do also on the vocal side. And yes, so Leonora, Leonore is is the heroine here, but she is disguised as a young man called Fidelio, and she's trying to discover whether her husband Florestan is being held in prison by Pizarro, and that's why the anger comes in towards Pizarro. And it is just such an amazing aria because it shows shows her ongoing hope as a woman in her constant love for Florestan. So you've got two words here, is hope and the constant love that a woman can hold and can sustain much more than any other being, I think. And also in the cabaleta that, that you will hear at the end, she is determined not to flinch from her destined task. So there we have another value of a woman, the persistence, the persevering with a task. Wonderful. Let's listen to it. What has you fallen ill, then, Grimmauld? Der Spiegel dort, der Zeitenbieger, und Treibe senfticht, Waldfeinblumen. Women's Radio Station is a fresh new broadcasting platform driven by love and passion. Welcome back to Future Classic Women Awards on Women's Radio Station, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists on the classical panorama. Today we're talking to Katerina Mina, the winner of the Opera section of Future Classic Women Awards. Katerina, in your winning interview, we talked about the challenges that you went through your career and personal life, in particular the fact that you are a cancer fighter and survivor and so an amazing winner. Yes, in all directions, really. And for the third section, you chose to play a song by Linda Lamont. So Linda Lamont is a composer more for contemporary music. Yes. And through— and we later invited Linda over as a special guest, and she told us for the first time her very challenging Personal story and very inspiring. I mean, these are challenges that they show your character and they allow you, if you survive, because in this case it's really a question of surviving, isn't it? Yeah, they make both cases. Yeah, they make you look at life in a different way. Absolutely. And music as well is a big part of it, isn't it? Yes. Well, music was what brought me and Linda together. And to be honest, when I met her a few years ago, I didn't know of her story. Um, and I think I told her of my story eventually with the cancer. But we met with Linda in, um, at Starmus, uh, which— Starmus is a very big international festival of astronomy. Ah, it is organized by Brian May. And other organizers. But I mean, it's a festival that brings science and music together. Ah, that's very interesting. And I was invited to perform there at the closing ceremony of the festival alongside Stephen Hawking when he gave his talk to an audience of close to 3,000 people in Tenerife. In the Calatrava, very famous venue, performing venue in Tenerife. It's one of the best 10 in the world, the Auditorio de Tenerife. So Alexei Leonov and Stephen Hawking were giving their speeches, and I was invited to perform, and I performed there music by Alexandros Chakalis, and it was electronic music. But classical contemporary electronic music, very, very interesting music. So, well, coincidence, Linda Lamont was in the audience and she listened to my voice and she was taken by my voice. And then we met in London and so we started collaborating. Linda wrote the first piece, which was the Rainbow of Light Anthem, which I performed, and it represented the International Year of Light. Organised by UNESCO. So then later on, Linda had the inspiration to write another song, especially for the universe again, which is the song you will be listening to. And it also came out as a single recently. And this song is actually based on the very famous classical piece called Romance for guitar. When you listen to it, you will immediately understand which song it is, which Linda took and rearranged, arranged in her own way, and using very, very beautiful words in relation to the universe and giving a beautiful message which you will hear. So when Linda wrote this song, she called me and she said, let's go into the Studio, I want us to record it. And what she did was she sent it directly to the organizers of the UNESCO International Day of Light, which we had exactly one year ago in May. So it was— she sent it to the committee, to the committee of this, of this organization. And we were very lucky because the committee— she sent it just like 2 days before the committee had their general meeting. So what happened was that they played the song in their general meeting and they were all taken by this song and the voice. And they unanimously said, Katerina Mina is going to be invited officially by UNESCO to come and open the inauguration of the first International Day of Light at This took place exactly one year ago on the 16th of May, actually, at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris. So this was the song that opened the celebrations. It was a one-day celebration. And then I also closed the celebrations with Rainbow of Light. So my collaboration with Linda goes back a few years. And it's nice to see actually how a collaboration between two women From different musical worlds as well. From different music backgrounds also, yes, because she's more into the classical folk music, Linda. How it came about to be such a beautiful collaboration between women, I again, I go back to the women. It's not because I'm biased and it's not because I'm a woman, but it's because I believe in in the power and the sustainability of the emotions in a woman. Absolutely. And that for me is very, very important in every path we take, to have a stable emotional situation, which you find more in women, I have to say. I think because we have more challenges. More challenges. We have Perhaps we're more patient. Yeah. You know, we have different values that we, we thread our lives on. Absolutely. Patience is one. Let's listen then to Look to the Universe by Linda Lamont. Thank you. I don't know how we got here, but we must keep searching for we are somewhere. Through, through the universe we are made of stars. Let your lights shine. All humans matter. Anything is possible in our diverse world. Even when living appears hard at times, You can find a way to overcome and achieve. Where there is life, there is hope. Welcome to Women's Radio Station. Our special guest today is the winner of the opera section of Future Classic Women Awards, soprano Katerina Mina. Katerina, now it's time for the odd questions that I couldn't ask you in our first Okay. Okay. We didn't have enough time. Yes. Time flies, like we said. So the first question is, do you have any strange hobby to free your mind or relax? I have a way of freeing my mind and relax. It's not strange for me, but it might be strange to other people who are not into spirituality. Yeah. But for me, it's the most amazing, actually. Way of relaxing is when I connect to my inner self, when I go into a meditative mode and I connect first to myself and then with a light, with the light. I connect, let's say, with the light. I connect with the universe because if I really say exactly who I connect with, it's It's another hour's interview and I'm happy to do it another time and we can call it— we can talk about spirituality because it is my second absolute passion and love of my life after— together, I would say, with the singing and because they go together, the singing and the spirituality. Absolutely. When as performers, the soul when you perform is very open, so it's open to a lot of things. We've got to be careful when we work with energy and with the spirituality to know how to build protection for our own auric field. It's very, very important because when you are in an open situation with your soul, it can also take and accumulate the bad energy from around. So it's very important to actually build protection, and that's the only way you can connect with the other dimension in the universe. So I have some techniques I use in my spare time, actually every day. I do this every day, and I have specific affirmations I do, and they keep me in a very, very good place, in a very relaxed place with myself, very well-focused. And also at the same time very positive. They keep me very positive. That's my strange hobby. A question: do you have any superstition before going on stage, like avoiding to wear a certain color or avoiding to— No, no, I don't have this because I think if you start being superstitious like this, it can be a little dangerous also, you know. If I see a black 'cat' before I go on stage. What does that mean? It's very possible I see a black cat, you know, on the way to the Opera House or the theatre. So I try not to do this, but at the same time, I always do a specific affirmation again, connecting with specific archangels. There, I said the word. With my archangels that are protecting me. And so before I go on stage, I know I have that protection and that blessing. And so, but it's not superstitious, but I always have with me, that's something else I will say, I have a specific crystal I wear on me, whether it's, most of the times now people can't see it. I have it somewhere inside my body, my clothes. Sorry, my body, I don't. But it is. You ate it. I ate it, yeah. Crystal that I have on me that gives me that extra protection, or it just makes me feel like that, you know. Okay, so do you have any funny moment or embarrassing moment that you can recall being on stage? Or— yes, yes, yes. Okay, I mean, there was one, one, one time when I was performing Donna Elvira in a big production in Kuwait Actually, no, it was in Bahrain, and it's so embarrassing to say this, but I missed my cue, you know? You know, because sometimes you have to, if it's not a proper opera house also, and it wasn't in this case, it was a production built, a purpose-built production, and you have to run from one place to the other to get to the other part of the stage. And I don't know really, I don't know what happened, and you don't have, you know, you're not in the opera house to have your call, someone giving you your call and your cue. And I was late going on stage for my cue. It was the most embarrassing situation you can be in. But okay, I mean, I still got very good reviews, raving reviews on my performance. And again, in the Middle East, it was another funny moment when I was performing Violetta from La Traviata. The previous roles are no longer singing this role. It's heavier now, roles for my voice. But anyway, and we were as a whole opera group, we were late arriving at, in Kuwait because of a phenomenon there was in the air. And so all the planes were delayed. So in any case, we arrived and we really, all these hours of traveling and you and we just had to go and do the dress rehearsal with no sleep and no rest, so it was really, really tough. So basically we didn't have time to use all the costumes, and so in the evening we started the show and we realized that part of my costume was a little bit too big for me on site. Oh no! And I sing the duet with the tenor and the tenor's eyes are not on looking in my eyes, they were looking further down simply because my top started going— oh no, lowering, lowering. And I was so much into the role that I didn't even realize that my top was lowering. Oh my God, so funny moments. Oh la la, absolutely. All right, well, the last song of today is Angel of Fire by Steven O'Dell with words by Katerina Mina. Yes, yes. I write poetry in the past 7 years, and my poetry is finally going to be published. I'm really, really happy for this. So Angel of Fire is also the title of my debut album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, who is playing for us here. And Hodel is the composer, the Swiss composer who took my words and set them into music. Fantastic! Friday afternoon in Manhattan. Madam, I feel you coming towards me. You enter into the big lobby that looks like a library. Oh, the study of life's purpose. Who walked through all those busy people? Who wake on the laptop silently. Yet they make noise, make so much noise. But I am sitting at home. Oh, stunning night for me. As we look into each other's eyes. In that moment, my life can change forever. In that moment, And this was Angel of Fire by Stephen Hodel with words by Katerina Mina and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
