Hello and welcome to Future Classic Women Awards with me, Stefania Passamonte, on Woman's Radio Station, the program where we search for the most amazing new female artists of the classical panorama. Today on Future Classic Women Awards, we'll be talking to Bei Bei Wang, a gender-defying percussionist, which is not only an acclaimed international virtuoso, but also a composer and music researcher with both Chinese and British musical educational background. Dunque, you start your biography saying that you are a gender-defying percussionist. Why do you use that? Actually, it's not from myself, it's a from the reviews of some newspapers. And I'm very blessed and lucky enough to have this kind of title as a Yang Hun-Jie violinist, because I really enjoy being a classical musician. Apart from that, I love to embrace as much as I can to reach new possibilities of doing music nowadays. Yeah, absolutely. So I, I read that your music spans from, from classical, contemporary, experimental, traditional, improvisation. There is even electronic jazz, pop, pop. So I mean, do you think nowadays it's still important to have all these definitions, this you know, genders, these things like these boxes that they really close the artist in a specific square. Yeah, I think for nowadays it shouldn't be a problem, it shouldn't have boundaries between art forms, as personally point of view. What I'm trying to do is try to break these boundaries to be able to embrace everything and mix everything together as one. Do you think this is something that is characteristic, for example, of your career of being a percussionist, for example, or you thought it would be important also for a violinist or a pianist or a cellist to try to break that? Yeah, that's right. I like your questions because being as a percussionist, we are able to reach as many instruments as we can. We not only playing standard marimba, timpani, snare drum, drum kit, but also we have to test, experiment a little bit around our daily life or even elements. So that's taking me to the field that I've never been and I thought that I was going to travel to. By playing music is a great journey. So I really enjoy it to be able to try different things. Yeah, so I did read that about this, you know, trying different instruments. So you are a very active world music researcher, right? So I read that you travel worldwide looking for and collecting ethnic music, traditional percussion, and dance. Can you tell us— there is one in particular that really captured my interest. It was the Anhui flower drum lanterns in China. Yeah, that's my research when I was in China during my master's study. I went back to my hometown, a very little, but it's a very little village in this side of my hometown I've never been to. And I spent 3 months living with the local farmers together and, you know, to live in the ancient time. Amazing. Playing and eating, talking, dancing with them. So they making music as a child. They just teach their generation, generation by generation. By talking. Oh, wow. And they don't have music score, they don't write music, and everything is by listening. So this is back to the original idea of how people listening and creating music. I saw that you're also collaborating with Korean composers and Japanese composers, uh, Japanese groups. So how different are those style of music? Yeah, music styles are quite different because it's from different cultural backgrounds, but generally, um, our heart— we are all human beings, it's all the same. And I feel really lucky I studied traditional Chinese music at a very early age, so I was able to have kind of idea how to grab what we have from our blood and to combine what we are creating now and to be able to do the future. So it's always like you're taking, you're looking back your past of your life and you enjoying what you have at the moment and you also think about what it could be in the future for the next generation. Yes, absolutely. I really like this idea. So Shall we maybe listen to some of the organic music by Tan Dun? He is an Oscar winner and Grammy winner, a composer and conductor, and he invited you to be featured in the concerto. There is the Water Concerto, the Paper Concerto, and the Heart Concerto. Can you tell us something about this? Oh, sure. I've been really lucky. It's a privilege for me to work with Maestro Tan Dun. For almost 10 years now. So I was auditioned to do his opera tea for 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. I was lucky enough to get a position to be able to play his opera as a percussionist on the stage. You know, you play with opera singer at the same, same time. Amazing. Yeah, it's just not in the orchestra. That brought me a lot of fresh idea. I learned water, paper, ceramic can be instrument, can be leading instrument in the music field. That's really inspired me a lot. Then after the first premiere, I was invited to play his Paper Concerto in Switzerland and following up with the Water Concerto and premiered the Earth Concerto in Australia. And also, I learned you from Modena in Italy. I just toured with Toscana Orchestra, yeah, from Florence, Bologna, Modena, Padova, Brescia. I did this organic music trilogy, which is Water Concerto, Paper Concerto, and Ceramic Concerto. Wonderful. So why don't we listen to the organic music by Tan Jun? Today we're talking to Bei Bei, a Chinese percussionist with a dashing international career. You say that you have both Chinese and British heritage. Can you tell us more about the British connection? Sure. After finishing my master's study in China, in Beijing, I got Scholarship to study at Royal Academy of Music in London, and that brought me to London and still stay now. I really enjoy my time studying, exploring new musicians, new music, and new art forms in London, and also traveling around the world. Oh yeah, I was the only Asian female musician actually in my percussion department, so the rest— I was surrounded by all British boys. Percussionists, yeah. It's kind of a treasure for me to learn the culture and also to understand their thinking. And I really appreciate my time there, being able to study with— I had 7 teachers teaching timpani, baroque timpani, modern timpani, and orchestra, Latin percussion, and jazz percussion. Vibraphone, marimba, solo, from all these amazing, amazing top musicians around the world. Yeah, and each of them is a different instrument, isn't it? Yeah, so I got a Mr. Monday, Mr. Tuesday. That's very funny. With different techniques and different repertoire, different heritage. Exactly, I was super busy. Amazing. Why do you think you were the only female percussionist? At the Royal Academy, for example, and in general, I mean, have you met many female percussionists, or is it still more of a male job? Yeah, I wasn't the only female percussionist in the Academy, but only a few since I entered the school. Only a girl from America, and the second year came in with another girl from Spain. Of course, there is a stereotype for percussion, for being a percussionist. This kind of thing belongs to men, it's more powerful. Women cannot be that strong. Strong to play, to be able to— It's not only with the percussion, I can tell you that. I discovered that as well with the piano. The piano is a percussionist instrument if you want. Yeah, the percussion word could be even worse for that, for the gender thing. Absolutely. So that's why I was very active since I was very little. I started violin and piano at 3 years old, but I always want to be active, to challenge something. So I started— I told my dad, I want to play drum kit. I want to— Ah, wonderful. What age? When did you thought that? When did you start? From the age of 6. Oh, wow, very early. Yeah, I seriously started because my violin didn't work out. Okay. Would you ever imagine to be nowadays, you know, in the major concert hall, touring and playing, you know, as a leading female percussionist of today? Yeah, I was very lucky, and I think I did the best choice for myself. Shall we listen to the percussion concerto with the China Youth Orchestra, The Sacred Fire by Tang Jianping? It was UK-premiered with BBC Symphony Orchestra in 2009. So this was The Sacred Fire by Tang Jianping, premiered by BBC Symphony Orchestra with Bei Bei percussionist. Our guest today is Bei Bei, and we just heard before the break the percussion concerto The Legend of the Coward and the Waver Girl by Anthony Paul Deritis. Bei Bei, would you tell us something about this title? It's so strange. Oh, it's a new concerto written for me by American composer Anthony Deritis. It's based on a Chinese legend, very ancient legend about Chinese Valentine's Day. So where this Valentine's Day comes from is based on the story that there is a Niu Lang who is like cowherd. One day led by his cow to the lake and he saw a few ladies taking bath there. And one of them is the fairy. From the heaven. Then they immediately fall in love at first sight, and they got married, had children. But it's also the reflections of the society at that time. The marriage between mortal and fairy is forbidden. Ah, I see. So after knowing they got married, the fairy's mother from the heaven, the empress sent soldiers to fetch her home. And of course, Niu Lang was fighting to be with her. But the very, very end, so the mother got angry and said, just drop a pin on the sky, which is the Milky Way. To separate the couple. Yes. But the very end, their love was touched by their parents. Then so they allowed them to have an annual reunion so that the appointed day, fairy would cross silver stream with black birds so that the day was because the ancient lunar calendar Chinese Valentine's Day is usually in August. Ah, okay. The 7th of July, 7/7. I see. But in lunar calendar. I see, I see. That's a beautiful story, I love that. Well, I know you're also a composer yourself, and I'd like to listen to some of your music. And in particular, I was thinking about The Killing Piano. It's the— it's a duo that you did with a friend of mine, actually. She's called Bel Chen, an amazing pianist. Can you tell us about this collaboration? Yeah, Bel Chen is my great friend and also beautiful collaborator, uh, been many years. And this inspiration was coming from a friend of my professor Stuart Welding from the University of Cheltenham. When I was doing concert with him, I saw he has a frame of the piano. So I call it dead piano on his desk, and I was asking what is that, and he said he is from the fine art background and said he's the installation for student to create some new ideas. I said, well, that's great idea, then I would love to took this inspiration to create some music. So I started use the hammers and mallets and brushes, even knife to do a little bit operation on the piano. And the music comes, it sounds like electronic music. Yeah, it's got me really excited. So, gosh, and after coming back from Trondheim, I started to write music for duo, for myself as a percussionist and for my piano pianist friend Bao Chun. So we kind of break the boundaries being as a pianist and a percussionist. We switch our position and we break the identity being whoever. Amazing. Can we listen to it then? Thank you. Yeah, please. Now I think it's time for the fun the fun questions or the odd questions. For example, do you have any strange hobby or, you know, to free your mind or relax? Oh, I do have some strange hobbies. I like hanging out in the hardware stores to get some instruments. And so also like IKEA, I recently got some pots flower pots and some, some piece of metals just for creating a new piece. That's amazing. Oh gosh, how is that going to be called? Yeah, I'm a little bit noisy, noisy neighbor. Sorry. And do you have any superstition or ritual before going on stage? Like, there is some performer that they never wear a certain color, or they have to do some special breathing technique before going on. Do you do anything special before you go on stage? I sometimes drink a little bit whiskey. Whiskey? All right. For relaxing. That's amazing. OK, wonderful. And do you have any fun experience, like performing or in the lessons, something that was really strange, never happened to you? Sorry? For example, we had a singer from the Ita Girls, she went on stage, she forgot her shoes. And so she had the long gown and she had to perform all the concert on the tippy toes. If something happened, always happened like that, making mistakes or forgotten music on the stage or forgot some very important music instruments. Oh my gosh, no way! How did you do then? I remember that happened many times for— of course, for I think every percussionist, you broke your mallets or sticks on the stage. Oh yeah. So by my experience, I always prepare extra, either on the back of my body or on the floor of the stage. All right, okay, that's very clever. Do you— I also saw that you've been teaching. You were invited by the Chinese Music Ensemble in the University of Birmingham to teach some percussion. What would you say to a young aspiring percussionist? I think I'm still young percussionist. So a student if you had to teach? I mean, I'm always a baby musician to be curious about the art world. I'm thinking I'm always the student of learning, of absorbing nutrition from amazing musicians around me. I would suggest that if you want to do music, want to do art, do not only do what you are doing right now and try to step out of the box and see theater and go to watch concerts, to see dance, to embrace the diversity in London. It's from the symbol of Chinese character for wedding especially. So usually during Chinese wedding, people put Chinese character happiness in double on the window or a bed.. It's for celebrating and to have a good wish for the couple. What a wonderful thing. Okay, so what's your next recording? So my next recording will be this project worked in Boston with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, premiered composer Anthony Polderitis. New percussion concerto dedicated to me. It's called The Legend of Cowherd and River Girl, will be released under Boston Modern Orchestra Sound in 2019. Wonderful. Yeah, it's the song that is the concerto that we heard before. It was really beautiful. Any other future collaboration? Recently I've been doing an amazing female project. I said it's for celebrating femininity. So we collaborated with 7 different artists from all over the world playing your traditional music and combine all these different music together to put in the project. And we are trying to bring it to London next year. Fantastic, I can't wait to listen to it. And next I will bring BBC Concert Orchestra to tour in China in August.
