I've certainly got possibly the most interesting person on the planet with me this afternoon. And this is Ting Fun Chick. Hello there. Hi, Avril. It's lovely to be on the show. You're very, very welcome. I'm so glad that you can join us. And today I hope that we're going to be talking about Chinese astrology, Feng shui. Have I said that right, Phu? Yeah, Feng shui is absolutely the right way to say it. Oh, gosh, that's so great because for years I was going feng shui. Feng shui, but feng shui, brilliant. And so I hope that you're going to be able to tell us a little bit more about what that is and a little bit more about you. So let's start at that, shall we? Who are you? Well, I'm a feng shui master and a Chinese astrologer. I'm also a mum and I love helping people with Chinese astrology and feng shui. Well, that sounds amazing. We're going to hear about that a little bit more in a minute. But first of all, can you tell us about how you got into this field? It was a hobby, Avril. It was something I've been interested in for quite a long time. I used to work in the corporate world and I studied feng shui and astrology in my spare time. That was in. Oh, that was a long time ago, in the 90s. And then I eventually found whom I consider to be the right teacher for me, and that's Master Joseph Yu of the Feng Shui Research Centre in Canada. So I went to Canada to study and what happened was call it the universe, call it synchronicity. But I was made redundant from my job and I decided to try something different. That was really a labour of love going over to Canada. Was that a big step at the time or did you go for a long time? It was for short courses, so it was quite. It's quite fun. I went with a friend and it's nice to be able to travel and to go and see different places. It certainly is. I can empathize with that. I love traveling with my work as well. And it's kind of like the universe helps organize that. So again, it does seem like it was everything happened at the right time for you. But I think listening to what you're saying now, it does show that there's a certain amount of dedication when it comes to getting these skills together. Yes, that's right. Feng shui, the sort of feng shui I practice, which is flying stars. Feng shui is really a lifelong journey. There are easy feng shui tips that everyone can apply. But I'd like to emphasize for the listeners that, you know, for a really deep knowledge of feng shui, it takes many years and I'm still learning. Oh, I say that about my craft as well. I kind of think that I'm going to run out of life before I know all the things that I want to know about. It keeps us out of mischief. Hey, phone. Yes. So before we go into the details about what you do, I just want to marvel at how we're sitting here together because we actually go back quite a long way, don't we? Yes, that's right. We first met many, many years ago. It was at Watkins, if I remember rightly, when they used to have that little Buddhist shop. Yes, the Esoteric Centre. That's right. And it was all crystals and Buddhas and you were doing your thing and I was doing my thing and we kind of picked up on each other's journey there, didn't we? Yes, that's right. And for those of you who don't know about Watkins, I've got to say it's this fabulous book bookstore on Cecil Court which is just off Shaftesbury Avenue, isn't it? That's right, yeah. It's been there well over a century. Yeah. And it publishes esoteric books, tarot decks and whatnot. But it was a great place to be an apprentice, I think, in those days. Yes, we've both come a long way since then. That's right. And then we kind of reconnected again at the College of Psychic Studies, didn't we? Yes, that's right. And I'm looking forward to doing or teaching feng shui in Chinese astrology in College in May 2018. Oh, that's really, really exciting. I'm pretty sure that's going to be a very popular course. So tell us a little bit more about this course then. What, what kind of a format is that going to take? Well, the. There's one day for Chinese astrology and one day for feng shui. So one is the 6th of May and one's the 20th of May, and these are just like one day introductory courses. So for the Chinese astrology, you'll go home with your own chart and have a basic understanding of the four pillars of destiny. For the Feng Shui class again. So you were saying, what can people hope to achieve from this course then? Well, for a one day introductory course to really get a good idea of what feng shui is about and to get a really good idea of what Chinese astrology is about. And on both days when you come to the course, you'll be able to go home with your own Chinese astrology chart and an idea of how your chart works and what's ahead for you. And then for the feng shui to be able to take home some easy to apply tips that you can put in place and help improve things. Ooh, it sounds deeply, deeply fascinating. So when you talk about improving things, what do you mean by that? Well, the way feng shui works is feng shui deals with the, if you like, the spirit of your home or the spirit of your office. And by arranging things in a certain way, we can have our environment, our home or office support us in getting what we want. That could be improved health, happiness, wealth, career, success, relationships. Sounds amazing. You were talking earlier something about like, if we sit in the Southwest, we could get success. So does that mean then I go into my house with a compass, I find out where the southwest is, then I just sit there and then I have success? I mean, can we unpack that? What does that mean? Well, that little tip is for the month of March, because the energies, the qi for feng shui actually changes every month. So this month, the yearly energies and the monthly energies, which are the same for everybody's house, those two energies that come together in the southwest, it's a combination that supports career progression. Now, that's a very general tip. And for your house, Afril, we would want to take a compass measurement for your particular house. We'd also need to know when your house was built, when it had renovations, in order to find the success corner for you in your house. But the Southwest, the dynamic energies, which change every year, and every month they're coming together in a pattern for this month, which means the Southwest is a good place to sit for success. And that's a safe tip to be used by everybody. So in feng shui, we can have general tips which everybody can use. But to really get to the power of feng shui, you want to have it personalized for you and your home. Oh, it sounds like something that everybody should do. It sounds like you can really kind of amalgamate all of this and come up with a real little power pack for yourself. Yes, that's right. Sounds amazing, but I want to rewind a little bit because you also an expert in Chinese astrology now. You made a comment earlier when we were chatting about the four Pillars. What are these four pillars? I am so intrigued. Well, that's such a fantastic question, Avril. Thank you. The four pillars are the four pillars of destiny and that's a full natal Chinese astrology chart. When most people think of Chinese astrology, you think of your year animal. So this year is the year of the dog. A lot of people also know their birth year sign. So the year animal is like the sun sign in astrology. So it's just a small part of your full chart. Whereas the four pillars is a full natal chart that takes into account your year animal. You also have a month animal, a day animal and an hour animal. So quite a menagerie. And with each animal there's also an element. So this year, dog year, it's an earth dog year. So in your month, year, day and hour, or should it be year, month, day and hour? If you do it in order, you have one, these, these are the four pillars. So the four pillars of destiny is the full natal Chinese astrology and it's a lot more detailed than your year sign. And it can help you with, it can help you with getting along with others and it can help you with career and understanding what to do, when and how to go about doing it. Now you see that I am completely intrigued because I know a little bit about Western astrology. So for example, I was very interested in hearing you talk about the earth dog because at the moment we've got Saturn in Capricorn, which is really earthy. And so I can see a kind of a correlation, albeit a vague one, but it's kind of building up there. But I've got to ask you, I'm a metal rat. Yeah. So what does a metal rat have in the dog ear? Well, in general, the metal rat could for metal rats in dog ear, that the earth of the dog is a power element for a rat sign. And the power element is about authority, it's about gaining recognition. So for me, Avril, what I see for you in general as a metal rat is a dog ear will bring you opportunities for you to be in a leadership role and to get more noticed and for more people to acknowledge your amazing skills. So I've got some information. Phone. Are you ready to do this? Yes. Let's have Natalie. Let's have Natalie's date of birth, please. It's the 28th of the 6th, 1989. So what I'm doing is I'm popping it into our app. The app is free to download for iPhones, Android smartphones and Windows Phones and computers. And it's called Chinese Destiny Stars astrology. So you can download this app for free and go into the four pillars calculator. So it's 1989, June 28th. June 28th. So you pop the date of birth in and you also pop in Your birth time, which is 0, 0.05. So five past midnight. Right. But we know that in June 1989, we had British summertime daylight savings. So there's also a little tick box. So if you're born when there's daylight savings or summertime, you tick that, because it then actually takes the time back to the time according to the sun. Oh, that's interesting, because in astrology, as you know, it's the moment of your first breath according to the universe. And the universe doesn't really mess around with clocks going forwards and back, it just takes it from that moment. So we need to adjust, get the accurate solar time. Oh, that is so interesting. So then we just tap the compute button and I have Natalie's chart here. May we talk about it? Do we have your permission now? Yes, we've got. We always could do the right thing. We ask people's permission before we do a reading. So Natalie's born in the year of the Earth Snake, the month of the Metal horse, the day of the Earth Horse and the hour of the Wood rat. So that's. So Natalie's four pillars are the year Pillar, Earth Snake, the month Pillar, Metal Horse, the day Pillar, Earth Horse, and the Hour Pillar, Wood Rat. And, Natalie, you are an Earth person because the element of the day gives you your type of. So Natalie, being born in summer with lots of fire element in your chart makes you quite a warm and charismatic person. You do need to bring the water element into your life, and communications is water, and working in radio is the water element. So you are doing the right thing in the right place. That's amazing. And being an Earth person, you're quite practical. So being a producer in radio is the right job for you to be in. The fire element in your chart is what we call your resource element. What am I? What does it mean? What does it mean? But we've just done our producer Natalie's Chinese chart and I think what I got from that was it's really empowering. It's like confirming that information that you have about yourself. So I could see it as something that would really spur you on to achieve and for greater goals and perhaps somewhere along the line to make peace with yourself. Yes, Afro, as you know, in the kind of more modern style of reading, it's about offering guidance to empower people rather than to offer any sort of predictions. And if in Chinese astrology readings or any other type of readings, we can help people by helping them be more self aware. And in astrology also the timing for doing different things at different times. It means that people are empowered by having a reading and can feel more positive about what they can do and when's the best time to do it. That sounds amazing and I think it plays a really good part in the holistic field. But I want to move it on a little bit now because I'm very interested in Feng shui, a little bit beyond my remit. So I'm interested to hear what you've got to say about it. But one of the things that's been in my mind is can you do Feng shui, say in A corporate environment, yes, definitely. Feng shui is all around us. Feng shui actually starts from the outside. So in town and country planning, urban planning, you could even apply feng shui to the road layouts. But certainly in a corporate environment, feng shui is incredibly powerful. And in the east, in Asia, all the big corporates, all the tycoons and all the big companies, they use feng shui to their advantage. And look at who's doing better in business at the moment. And who's that people. A lot of Asian companies are doing very well. Yeah, yeah, I see what you mean. So where did feng shui originate then? And how come, where did it start from? And how has it got so popular? Well, feng shui started in China and its origins go back thousands of years. So in the very beginning, the ancient Chinese made observations about nature. So what they observed was where to settle and how to build a settlement so that they would prosper, so that they would have more children, so that they'd, the tribe would. The tribe would grow and they'd also have better crops. So then those observations included looking around them at the mountains, the lakes and the rivers, but they also observed the heavens and the stars. And so for the ancients, they came up with ideas about how the universe from above was reflected on earth. And they made a lot of observations. And they also used the Yi Jing to come up with theories and ideas of how to arrange buildings in order to have better lives. Oh, that sounds like a good reason to have a system like that in place. I know this might sound a silly question, but does it work? Is there any empirical evidence that it actually does do what it says on the tin? Feng shui works because, and you'll like this, Avril, feng shui is working with the spiritual forces of the universe. And my view is when feng shui doesn't quite work, it isn't. The feng shui is not working. It's because we might need to fine tune it a little bit as practitioners. So feng shui works, and it also depends on where you are with your Chinese astrology. So if you're going through a good phase in your timing, then you'll get a lot more benefit from feng shui. And if you're going through a more challenging times, feng shui will certainly help you, but you'll get more success according to your own personal timing. So feng shui works, and the evidence, we could say, is based on the results that people get. So we can ask for, we can ask people who've had feng shui about the results they've got, and I've certainly got some testimonials on my website. So the results are very much about what people, the benefits people get from afterwards. But we can't measure it, if you like, exactly on a pie chart because we're all human beings and life isn't exactly like that. So you can't always quantify it in, shall we say, exact figures. But you can certainly see it in an improvement in people's lives. Oh, that's great. I think it's always good to hear how our kind of work really does better other people's lives because at the end of the day we are of service to other people. It's just that this happens to be our particular niche. What would you say would be your typical client? Well, I have clients who are residential clients and I have clients who are business people who have business premises. And I would say my typical client are people who want to get the best they can out of life. They're also people who are very open minded because Feng shui is about dealing with spiritual energies. So they're very open minded. They're the sort of people who are often onto new ideas because of their open mindedness and they're the sort of people who want to succeed in life and so will get the extra help. So having Feng Shui is like having a secret helper, having your home be a secret helper for you in your life. So in terms of age, my client base covers quite a wide range of age. So I would say what my clients have in common is a desire to be the best version of themselves, have to lead a good life and to be very open minded. Yeah, I can quite imagine that if I was giving my house a makeover, for example, that I would put Feng shui on the list of things to do to get it just right. So does Feng shui instruct on colours or where to position furniture and so on and so forth? Yes. If you're thinking of redecorating your home or doing a major renovation, that's a really good time to call in a Feng Shui consultant. When you have the right colors and the furniture in the right place, it allows the qi, the spiritual energies, to flow beautifully in your home. And when that happens, your connection with your home and your connection with the universe, your is like boosted and that means you have more energy to be able to accomplish your goals and things come more easily to you. I love this idea, you know, of the spirit of the home. I mean, I've lived in my place for 27 years now and it's most definitely got its own personality. And years and years and years ago, I used to do house clearances when people thought that there was stuff going on in their home. And what I found was that the house and the occupant matched each other. The history of the house, the Persona of the house, it absolutely went hand in hand with the occupant. And I suppose you might see that as you go into someone's home as a feng shui consultant. Yes. I love that you describe houses as having personality, because that's how we see houses in feng shui. So what we do in feng shui is that we bring out the best personality in the house. I love that. That is great. And quite often the people and the house that are, if you like, connected and when you bring out the best personality, the house, you kind of helping to bring out the best in the person and also in different parts of the house and making use of the different personality qualities. So that was really, really interesting. That was really fascinating. And it's a shame we've got to stop talking there because, you know, I just think that this whole idea of the personality house and feng shui is just so deeply, deeply intriguing.
