In this episode of Kitchen Sink Spirituality, host Avril Price welcomes her longtime friend Johannes Seal, a German-born spiritual practitioner who’s become something of a Renaissance man in the holistic world. From his early teenage years spent exploring tarot cards in Germany to his move to London in the mid-90s, Johannes shares how this ancient divination tool has been his constant companion through life’s transitions. What makes his journey particularly fascinating is how tarot helped him see that everything was actually fine when his intuition was telling him otherwise—a powerful lesson in trusting the cards’ wisdom even when it contradicts our surface-level concerns.
But Johannes is far more than just a tarot enthusiast. He’s studied under the renowned German tarot author Hajjo Banzhaf, explored runes, dabbled in astrology and Chinese astrology, and created his own oracle deck using sigils. The conversation touches on his evolving spiritual path, which comes in waves—sometimes front and center in his life, sometimes quietly simmering in the background. Avril also hints at Johannes’s growing reputation for his garden design work, which she describes as creating “gardens for the soul.” Together, they paint a picture of a deeply thoughtful spiritual practitioner who uses multiple divination systems and creative practices to help others—and himself—navigate the beautiful chaos of modern life.

And so you can get into your spiritual vibes, baby. So anyway, here today we have the very fabulous, the most wonderful, the most gorgeous Johannes Seal. Hi, Johannes. Hello. Thank you very much for coming in today. I've been very much looking forward to our conversation. Now I have to say before we continue that I do know you. In fact, I know you very well. Yes, for quite a while. For quite a while. Yes. We go back a long way. But our friendship is probably one of those that I'm very proud of because I would like to think that we've both done a lot of growing together. Oh yeah, yeah, definitely. We met at the College of Psychic Studies, didn't we? Yeah. We did many movies together. I took a class. I took a class with, with you. You did? And it started there. It started there and we became good friends. And over the years I've seen you develop your spiritual path in some really wonderful ways. In fact, you're a bit like an octopus because there's lots of things going on which we're going to talk about in our chat this afternoon. So the things I would like to cover are your tarot interests. Sure. And I also know that you made this fantastic deck of what I call sigils, because I don't know what else to call sigils. Yes, and we can, you know, talk about that a bit more in a moment, but one of the things that you're becoming quite famous for, I think is your garden. Yeah, well, gardens for the soul. Have I got that right? Is that what you call it? That's right, yes. And I can stand testament to the beauty of your work because you did mine. And actually the feedback I have of that is that it's. It's been called a masterpiece, but I won't divulge too much more about that at this stage. We're going to. We're going to talk about that in a moment. But first of all, Johannes, I'd really like you to tell our listeners who you are, where you're from and. And let's start with tarot. How did you get into the tarot. Tarot world, if you like. It's actually started when in my teens where I grew up in Germany, there's a game, a card game that uses cards very similar to tarot and they always interested me when I looked at them. And at the age of 15 I bought my first tarot deck. So. And it started from there. So I read books and I read the cards for myself and later on started reading cards for my friends. And it's been a long journey from that time on. Speaking about reading books, you studied with an author. Can you remind me of his name? Yeah, his name is Hajjo Banzath. Heyo Banzath. He's very famous in Germany. Yeah, it's very famous. Unfortunately he died a few years ago, but he's been amazing. He's written quite a lot of books. Why is he amazing? I think he's kind of started the tarot in Germany. He's one of the big names in tarot in Germany or in the German speaking countries because he wrote in. In German and his, his books were really practical. I find them very practical and easy to use. One of his books that I still use from time to time is his the words to pick things together. I can't get the neck. Your mind's gone a blank, darling. It's gonna blank. Yeah, that's the problem with changing from German to English. I sometimes don't find the words that I used in German, so. But Heil Banzhaf. I've got to say he's come up on my radar several times recently. And one of the things that's very interesting is that he changes the astrological correspondences because for our listeners tarot cards have an astrological correspondence. So for example, the chariot card is Cancer, death is Scorpio, Death is Scorpio and so on and so forth. But there are several authors who've played around with this and actually his astrological correspondences are a little bit different and have actually been food for thought for me personally in my own studies. Yeah. So I started with his books and from then on, you know, took it further and expanded and also then looked at other oracles like the runes or more like the dabbled in astrology, Chinese astrology. I just got very interested in occult sciences, so to speak. Yes. And did that add to your life as A young man. Yeah. It really helped me, in a way, to make sense of my life in a way. And it helped me to learn a lot about myself. For example, one of the things that happened with me when I read for myself, it was usually, you know, usually you pick up the cards when something's wrong in your life. So when I did that, most of the time, everything says, it's fine, everything's all right, everything's good. It's like, no, this can't be. This can't be. And I realized actually, it is. Everything is fine, and it is good. And it turns out right in the end. So it helped me to go through my life in a easier way. It helped me see things and also look at myself, my inner feelings and so on, or my problems that I had at the time. It really helped me. That's great to know. I mean, I've said it before. I'll say it again. Tarot is a fantastic tool to help you work out the chaos that you've been born into. Yeah. And you can kind of come out of that with a pretty good idea of who you are, what your talents and gifts are and what your purpose is. If you pay attention, of course. Yeah. Yeah. Fabulous. So you came to England. How old were you when you came here? Oh, I came to England. 95. So I was 20 moons ago. 24 or something. Yeah, mid-20s. Oh, baby. So did you kind of get into your occult path and esoteric studies immediately, or was it something that you picked up as you went along? It's actually my tarot path. This path, this spiritual path has been quite interesting because it's coming in waves, more or less. Sometimes it comes really to the forefront, and then it kind of goes away a little bit, and then it comes back again. So when I first moved to London, it actually came back up again because it really helped me at that, you know, being in a new place to go and discover what's going on with me and with other things around me. Fabulous. Thank you for that. And we are now going to go into a short break and we shall be right back. Talking more. Women's radio station will give a voice to your brand. You're listening to Avril Price with Kitchen Sink Spirituality, the voice of holistic London. And here we are with a very wonderful Johannes seal. And we're going on quite a fascinating trip down memory lane. So we're here in London with you now after coming from Germany and discovering tarot and one thing another. Let's move it on a little bit. So I remember we went for a day trip with a whole posse of us, we all went out and I remember that we were. I don't know, we were doing some kind of group thing together. It was in. At All Hallows Eve. Halloween. Oh yeah, that's right, it was. We were going to. We were doing a ceremony. Yeah, spooky, spooky. But it was. Our ceremony was more to celebrate because Halloween's about the departed spirit being closer to the earth vibration. And it's honoring your ancestors really, isn't it? It is, yeah. And the earth that they once trod. But anyway, I remember in this kind of group gathering that you started speaking in a very funny language. Yeah, I was a bit nonplussed to have to say. Yeah, I can't remember that. What was that on about? I've thought about it several times. Don't worry, I'm not going to ask for a demonstration. No, it's not true. If I could actually, what happened there was. It's very strange even for me, even for me. Because it was just. It was a place outside of London. So we made our way to this place and I kind of already on the way, I kind of got this feeling of being. It's almost like I've been close to another dimension or something. I could feel something is about to happen that day. And we did some exercises in a group and. And one of the exercises was I was supposed to go and we talk about in with the other person that we were teamed up about a past life. Just going and psychically connect and talk about the past life. And so I did all that. I tried to connect and the other person, the other guy who was sitting with me, he talked his stuff and then it was my turn. And I knew exactly if I would open my mouth, I just. I wouldn't speak English or any language that people would understand. It just. I just knew. And it took me a while. And you came over and said, what's going on? And it was. And then I just said, okay, let's just forget about it. And I just spoke out. I came across something very similar when I was doing a crystal course many moons ago and it was called Language of Light. And it's. It's basically as I understood it then. Yeah. Was that you're channeling light and you are expressing the frequencies of light in a language all of its own. And that's what I assumed was going on. Mind you though, Johannes, I have to say I was rather relieved because the guy that you were working with was an almighty conspiracy. Conspiracy theorist and he was driving me bonkers. So it was rather lovely to hear your interpretation of resonance with him this way because it just stopped all of that. That's good. Good. It's very interesting. It happened a couple of times before and after, but usually it happens when I'm on my own. Actually, it's quite interesting. I start doing that when I go to the College of Psychic Studies. Oh. It has that effect on people. That's sure. It's almost like I start mumbling to myself. Yes, I've done it. Interesting. But I even had people having conversations with me and I answered and I knew the answer was right, but it was just didn't people didn't understand it. I think the reason that I wanted to highlight that is we are talking about a spiritual journey here. And for listeners who are not familiar with spiritual development, it can take you all. It take you off in all kinds of wonderful ways that are completely harmless, by the way. Yeah. But it's all part and parcel of you discovering yourself and I think you've got the right to be as eccentric as you want to be. Yeah. And yes, I think spiritual development does bring out your eccentricities. Personally, I revel in it because in there, there's a whole bunch of creativity. Yeah. And I think it takes also some. Some time and some learning for yourself. Yes. To accept that. Yeah. Because. Yes. Because society these days, they just want to, you know, you have to be a certain way. And so. And so. And so. Yes. And when you. When you. Then you're not like that. You. You. You want to fit in, don't you? But you have to. Music to my ears. Exactly. Because one of the reasons that I love what I do is that I feel that taking a spiritual path and really owning it brings you back to your own authenticity, to your own sense of integrity. And. And you own your own personal demography. And it is absolutely about self acceptance. Yeah, it is. Particularly in a world where we're taught to hate ourselves. Yes. Particularly in the first world. You know, you stand at a bus stop and you listen carefully to those conversations and people really loathe themselves and they don't trust their intuition. And we live very much in a nanny state where everybody makes decisions for us. But spirituality can give you, you know, a vocabulary. Vocabulary which you can, you know, devise your own narrative out of pretty much as you have done. Yeah. Yeah. And I could find it quite interesting when I do tarot readings for people, that comes up a lot as well, that people just want to know that what they do is the right thing, even though it sounds crazy to other people. And I think that's part and parcel. What about what spirituality is? It's about finding yourself as well. Where do you fit in in the world? I think it's also about falling in love with yourself and your own depth and your own wisdom and light that you bring to the world. I think it's fabulous. I always feel so privileged. Yeah. So. So we're moving on a little bit now. Your little deck. Yes. Which is actually really powerful. I've had a couple of readings with you and I've always gone, oh, wow. How can we describe this deck? Oh, I. I think let's start where it comes from, actually, because that's quite interesting. And that brings us back to where when I came to London first. Okay. Because I had lots of time, so I did lots of art, was very creative. And creating a deck is. It is creation. You need creativity for that. So I did paintings and some just scribbles on paper. And in one of those paintings. I just so oh, there's a symbol and I kind of know exactly what that symbol means and I found more of those symbols and I have at the moment about 150, 200 of those symbols. They're like a. They look maybe like slightly like Chinese characters or Japanese characters or hieroglyphs or something. They strike me as being quite Japanese. Yeah. So I then started to put them together and ended up with the Oracle deck. So I'm really enjoying this conversation but we need now to go to a jingle break. So we'll be back in a moment. And I'm here with the very wonderful Johannes seal. And we're having some very fabulous conversations here. So we were talking about your deck and I want to. Because I want to move on in a moment. So what I'm getting from this conversation about your cards is the power of the unconscious. Because I kind of feel that what was coming forward was the unconscious. Because the unconscious wants to merge with the conscious world at all times. But the unconscious doesn't have a language. So we create that language in order for the unconscious to be understood. And I think that's very much what happened with your set of cards. Yeah, I think it's very. The process was very interesting because I just hooked up on something on that one symbol and then I saw other things and I put them together in a way and kind of almost finished it, but it wasn't really finished and I didn't really think about it very much. And then much later on when I did the cast with you, I took it out again and I really started to working with it and really. And started to work with the meanings of the symbols and how they fit together in that. It's almost like a matrix that they fit in and how they work and how to get information out to them. And that just blew me away because it was so interesting how that just being put together and all of a sudden it works. And I started doing readings for other people and for you, for example. And there is so, you know, spot on. It's a very creative process, I think the whole thing from designing them then to actually laying them down on a table to read. It's got this fantastic creative dynamic. And you've got to work or think creatively in order to get best out of them. Yeah. Because in a way, because they've. The cards and the symbols are really plain. It's just black line drawings writing on a white paper. They're literally squiggles. Squiggles. Yes. But then. But once you work with them, they just. You start using your unconscious, your intuition. Yes. And you and your creativity and your connection with spirit and everything and everything comes together and all of a sudden it just comes up. You've never pushed for this deck to be published, so. But you are available for readings with them. Should. Yeah. Should people. I also have a few that. That I could sell. But the thing is, it is such an interesting and convoluted way of working with them. It's quite simple. But then there's lots of facets about it. It's not that easy to put down in writing or not for me. I Don't know where to start. So, yeah, if people would be interested, they could have them. And some people do have them. You see, I'm wagging my finger in because I'm constantly on his case to get them published and to write the book. Because I believe that where there's a will was a way. Yeah. I mean, you know, I'm even prepared to record them, the meanings, as we go through a reading. And then you just. Yeah, do whatever. But anyway, because it's your gift to the world. Yeah, well, that, that's, that's. It's good. But I have also have some other things to do, like my gardening. Yes. So let's talk about that then. So I've got to say, this is your forte. In fact, if someone was to ask me how I would describe you, I would call you an urban shaman. Because, you know, you go into garden spaces, quote unquote, and you literally sprinkle fairy dust on them. And they look amazing after you've spent time on them. Yeah. Do you find that you have a natural empathy with plants? Yeah, yeah, I do. It's quite interesting. Everyone says I've got green thumbs. You know, I think you've got more than that, love. Green hands, maybe. It was always, you know, when I grew up, I grew up in the countryside and I was always out in nature. And from a very young age on, I pottered around in the garden, the vegetable garden, the flower garden of my mother. So it was always something that was dear to my heart. And I moved away from that for a while, but then I came back and when I. After wine, after. I worked first in a. In a health food shop for a while, but then I started doing my own gardening. I started my own gardening company. And that, you know, it was just the thing for me. And I just. Just love it. I love plants and. Well, that's really obvious. Yeah. And they. It's almost like they love me and they talk about. To me. Yeah. I mean, I've learned a lot from you, actually, about having a relationship with plants. Because it's. It's almost something that happens in the ether. Yeah. It. It's really quite remarkable. Yeah. What I want. So. So your business is called Gardens for the Soul? Yes. Why is it called that, then? It's. It's called that because I think gardens are there for the soul. They're there for a space for you to retreat. And I think one of the problems, especially in big cities like London, is that people kind of lose their connection with nature. And a garden is A very good place for that. For what? Just to connect with nature, reconnect. And also, you know, it's soothing just to sit in a garden and enjoy the green. Green is very, very. There have been studies that green is a very good color and humans need green to be healthy. So it's a very. I think it's a fundamental thing. Well, green is a heart center color. Yeah. I think it's part of that. Like, you know, a sunny day, everyone's in the park, we need green. We want to be outside in the green and in nature, and we try to. To get it everywhere. One of the things that I wanted to point out, which, what I've observed is that, you know, you call it gardens for the soul, but when you go into a garden, it's almost as if you've tapped into the spirit of the owner of that garden and you plan and devise what the garden should look like, the type of plants that would be best, and it would flourish with or without the due care of that person. As I can say from my own experience, it's been really quite astounding. It's magical, actually. Are you aware of that process that you tune into somebody and you go, right, okay, I think they need this, that and the other. I think at the beginning I wasn't that aware that I did that, but now I'm actually much more aware of it. And I now say, before I do any major work in the garden, like planting and so on, I actually want to work in the garden at least a day. Just being there in the garden, it can be just used as a tidy up and clearing and seeing what. What is there and how the garden feels. And I then just build up what the garden needs, so to speak, or the person who has the garden needs. And for me, something very organic. It works very organically the whole process. Because I also think that gardens aren't. Because some people say it's like garden rooms and stuff like that. I think it's garden is outside, it's nature, it's not a room. And before we go to the break, I just very much briefly want to say what's occurred to me as we've been chatting is that it's almost like you create a relationship between the garden and the owner. Yeah, it's almost like they mirror each other in some way and they get, you know, the owner gives the garden what it needs and the garden gives the owner what they need. And I just think that's mind blowing, actually. I think that's wonderful. Yes. Okay. Let's go to a break. Women's Radio Station will give a voice to your brand. Thank you. Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, affects 10 to 20% of the UK population at any one time. That's over 12 million people. IBS is a complex, life changing long term condition. Symptoms will vary from person to person and include abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation or both, bloating and swelling, excessive wind and the need to rush to the toilet. IBS can often lead to feelings of isolation and severely impact people's working and personal lives. Suffering alone with IBS can be devastating. Our charity, the IBS Network, helps people every day. We receive no NHS or government funding. By donating just £2 per month, you will be part of the IBS Network community of support. You'll be able to contact an IBS medical expert and you will help others like you to live well with IBS. To find out more, please visit theibsnetwork.org or call us on 011-427-23253. This is Women's Radio Station. You're listening to Avril Price with Kitchen Sink Spirituality, the voice of holistic London. And we have been talking to the lovely Johannes Seal and we've been talking Gardens for the soul. And I just really want to impress on you, my dear listeners, that is well worth checking out if you want to make your London space. Well, whether you live in London or anywhere for that matter, this guy is a genius with gardens and you will not be sorry for him to come and sprinkle his fairy dust all over your garden. We'll give you the details towards the end of the show of where you can find him. But there is just one last thing I want us to talk about and you're taking us all on a jolly holiday this year I have been roped in for an experience of a lifetime. I'm actually going on a retreat with Johannes to Spain. Come on, tell us all about this. Fill me in. Okay, well, it's a retreat in Spain. It's a healing retreat. I've been learning about and experience plant consciousness and plant medicine for a while and I now started organizing one first for my friends and now slightly winding it out a bit and I've had one last year and we have. I'm hoping to make it a yearly occurrence and you come with me this year. I've got to say I'm really looking forward to it. I was umming and ah. But you know, now that I've voted with my feet about it, I can see that it's going to be a fabulous opportunity for getting away from it all. Losing the computer and the phone. And just. And reconnecting. It seems to me that what we've been discussing about in our conversation is that your purpose is about reconnecting people to source. Yeah. Whatever that source is. Whether it's themselves, whether it's their sense of divine, whether it's nature. It seems to me that you are a bridge between people and whatever it is that they've lost a connection to. Yeah. And then you kind of facilitate a journey around that reconnection so that that person learns a lot about themselves and their own kind of like message of light if you like. Would you say that that would be true? Yeah, that's true. One of the reasons for this retreat and how it's going to pan out in a way is that for once it's away from civilizations. It's outside a little village in southern Spain. There is no mobile signal, there's no Internet. So it would be. It'd be back to nature. No, it's a. It's a fantastic space. I've been in those in that place now a few years running and the people who run the. The retreat center, they're. They're amazing. They've become friends of mine. Now it's vegetarian food as well. So it's vegetarian vegan food. So. So there's a big accent on health. On health. Well being. There will be massage. It's a friend of mine who's coming to do Lomi Lomi massage. Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage. Which is amazing. Why is it amazing? It's. It's just the way it is. It's like two hands and it's a full body massage and it just sounds great. It just sends you again. It connects you with yourself. Yes. And it comes from the Hawaiian tradition and again it's a shamanic massage. It's kind of from that tradition. I'm looking forward to the yurts and. Yeah, you'd be sleeping in yurts and the skies at night, the stars are just amazing. No light pollution or anything. So it's just getting back to that and you can really relax. And we're going to do some ceremonies there, some healing and having some plant medicine. I've got to say I am actually quite looking forward to that. And I love the synchronicity, the serendipity of life because you know, earlier on in the winter I was myself feeling a bit disconnected. You know, it's been a funny old past couple of years and I was feeling a bit fragmented and I wasn't sure about where my path was actually going to take me. I felt like I was, I was a bit like a duck, you know, gliding along on the top of the water but my legs paddling away underneath the water and I said, oh, what am I doing? What am I doing? And life seems so frenetic. So I feel that the time is absolutely right for me to be reconnected to who I am because I think I'm a very different person now to what I was four years ago, five years ago. And I think it would be nice to get back in touch with who I am. So. And then of course that feeds into all these other activities that I've got going on in my life. So I'm looking forward to it, Johannes, I have to say. And I'm looking forward to meeting other people, like minded people. Yeah, it's going to be a really nice bunch of people. And you're hoping to have this every year? I'm hoping to have that every year, yes. And like a regular thing. So it's plant ceremonies, it's hiking in the hills. Yeah. Swimming by the pool. Yeah. Looking at your itinerary, I think there seems to be a lot of like exchanging stories and experiences which I love that and that's, that's quite interesting thing is this. What I've found in previous retreats myself is the people that get together, they just bounce off each other and it's almost like they needed to be there together to help each other work their stuff through and so on. So it really works really well. And do you get to see a change in people after they've done these retreats? Yeah, I've seen people, they, you know, they come in at the beginning, down, you know, their face really drawn and at the end they smile and laugh and are happy. So it like for me, the first time I went to, on one of those retreats I was really stressed, amazingly stressed with work and you know, what am I doing? What's going on and the retreat just helped me to completely unwind. And actually one day I had the most peaceful day of my life and it really helped me to take that and bring it into my life now. So I can just think back on that time and still draw from it. Yes, do draw from it. Well, it would be lovely to offer that piece to our listeners. Where can they find you, Johannes? So they can find me on my website, which is gardensforthesoul.org or they can find Gardens of the Gardens for the Soul on Facebook. And so you're on Facebook. Do you have Twitter? I don't have Twitter now. No. I can see why. Okay, Johannes, thank you so much for coming in and being a fabulous guest. Pity that we've run out of time because there's so much that I would really love to talk about in greater detail. You must come back. Yeah, sure, sure. To get to the retreat. Yeah, we'd love. Thank you for bringing the mugwort tea into. Oh, yeah, yeah. I could feel myself getting quite chuckly. And I want to say thank you to the lovely James Blake, our producer who fiddles with his bits as we have our conversation. He fiddles with his bits rather well and brings you stonkingly good programmes. Thank you, James. Okay, everybody, thanks for tuning in and bye for now.
