Well, welcome to the Universal Soul Show. I'm Sarah Griffiths here with you for the next hour. Delighted to say my guest coming up for you is multi award nominated actor and singer Richard Shelton. I'm so looking forward to speaking with him. Many of you will have seen him as best actor in a leading role for his portrayal of Frank Sinatra in Rack Pack Confidential in London's West End. Rich is currently living in LA and has very kindly agreed to get up very early this morning to talk to us live on, on the air. He not only sings of course, but is very much involved in the world of television and film. So he's going to be joining me live, as I say, very shortly. Very early there in fact, I believe, Richard Shelton. Richard, great to have you here. Thanks for joining us this morning. It's great to be here. It's a little early but I've got the strongest coffee you can imagine sitting beside me. So all is well. That's marvelous, Richard. Well, especially considering we thought we were gonna have you here live. We were so eager to get you here. We wanted week early. So listen, we'll take you any way that you come down the line live is great for us, Richard. Just looking at your five things that feed your soul. So you know, we can't really start. I've put it at number one in actual fact. So music, jazz and classical, you know, as a multi award nominated actor and singer, Richard, you know, best actor in a leading role for Rat Pack Confidential. Where did your whole love of music start? When did you know you could sing for example? I mean I think really young, I mean you often hear that but it was just I think that singing and music is sort of say is that even as a young boy when I heard my parents, you know, my parents used to listen to a lot of jazz and big bands so I grew up listening, you know, to that sunny climbs of Wolverhampton all those years ago. So really, as long as I can remember, I just opened my mouth and sang. And whether it was, you know, lip singing along to the side of music or Oliver and, in fact, I got into terrible trouble when I went to a new school back in the 60s, and I told everyone in the school I was, in fact, Mark Lester, and I just starred in the. That's outrageous. I love that, Richard. It's interesting you say Wolverhampton, because I think your journey, literally geographically, from Wolverhampton to la, where you are now, you know, has been an extraordinary one. And I know your story, in actual fact, inspires so many people and encourages us to really follow our dreams. So you had this sort of serendipitous connection to Frank Sinatra all the way along, didn't you? I mean, didn't you see a picture of him as a child and you noted a similarity between you? That's exactly right. I was flicking through a magazine, one of my mother's magazines, and there was a picture of this man called Frank Sinatra as a boy. And I said to my mother, who is this man? He looks like me. And she sort of skeptically looked at this thing and said, my God, it does. Yeah. So even from a tiny age, I was always aware of him. And then I was really influenced by my dad when he bought the Frank Sinatra My Way cassette, if anybody can remember cassettes that you used to load in. Isn't it extraordinary to think how long ago that seems? Absolutely. But I was 14 when he bought that, and I used to sing along and I used to sing into a drumstick. My dad was an amateur drummer, he loved drumming. So I. Even at 14, I just got the resonance of the songs and the shape of the lyrics. And, you know, Sinatra was all about lyrics, lyrics, lyrics, first and foremost, because, you know, it's like, as an actor on the page, it ain't on the stage. You know, the lyrics have to come first and the melody second, because then the song means something. So even at 14, I was aware of, you know, what that music meant and how it resonated for me. And then, of course, many years later, got to play him, you know, play my hero in the West End, which was phenomenal. And I think, Richard, that's what's so extraordinary, to actually combine that combination of skills you have both as an actor and then as a singer, this phenomenal talent. And in actual fact, what we're really celebrating, one of the reasons we thought we were going to see you next week, we are going to be seeing you in the UK really soon, because you've in actual fact, written a play based on Frank Sinatra's life in a way, but it's called Sinatra Raw. Just tell us a little bit about this and you're going to be doing it at the Edinburgh Festival. That's right. So Raw is it really was inspired by two things. It was inspired by what I knew of Frank Sinatra as an actor, you know, from Rat Pack Confidential, which was about the dark side of that man's character. You know, we delved deep behind the blue eyes to sort of find out what that mercurial man was all about. And I've sort of zoomed forward in time to 1971 and I've. I've set it. It's sort of semi truthful. I performed in a place called Purple Room, Palm Springs recently and I had no idea until I got there and I actually had Frank Sinatra's tuxedo with me, which, which I own and which fits like a glove. I mean, it's all another coincidence, isn't it? That's always been there, underlining all this. Yeah. But the guy who ran it said, well, of course, you know, this is where Frank Sinatra sang on that stage from the wee small hours of the morning. No. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I, I've written this play that imagines him in 1971, immediately before he retires for the first time in his life. Right. And he drinks too much and he starts to reminisce and he starts in his own mind to talk about his broken heart, love affair with Ava Gardner. The allegations to do with the Mafia. Yeah, it goes deep inside his head and, you know, and he faced middle age, so it's, you know, we don't expect our heroes to face middle age. And I think that's what's so poignant, Richard. You do you, in a way expose the real kind of human and we talk on the Universal Soul show about sharing the experience of being human. And I think that's really what you seem to do when you get hold of Frank Sinatra as a character. We're going to listen to your first choice of music, which in actual fact is the name of the title of a fantastic album you've recently made called Lost and Found. So we're talking here about the actual. The, the title song to the album, Lost in Sound, music by Alex Frank and the lyrics by Spencer Day. So you recorded this in Capital Studios, is that right? In la? Yeah, that's right, yeah. We recorded it right where Sinatra made all his music. So it has lots of resonance song and it is a journey, I mean, life is. Honestly, my most fundamental belief is that life is a journey and you've got to keep. You know, journeys have twists and turns and ups and downs and sometimes you get lost and sometimes you get. I hadn't realized that's in actual fact the first time that music from this album has been played in the uk. When's it due to be released? It's coming out in September. We don't know the exact date yet, but yeah, that was its first, first ever broadcast. Well, I'm very honored, Richard. It was, it's absolutely beautiful how much when you're doing this play that you've written. So Sinatra Raw in Edinburgh. And by the way, for anybody wanting to book their tickets in advance, it's also a world premiere of Richard's new play where obviously he plays Sinatra. It's going to be at the Frankenstein Pub, which is George IV Bridge in the Old Town. So the Edinburgh Festival. And of course a lot of our listeners are listening globally. So if you fancy heading over to Edinburgh for the amazing festival that happens there every year, it's between August 3rd and the 27th and Richard show is going to be at 1:15 daily, the show running for about an hour. How much, Richard, are we going to hear you actually singing during that play? Well, that's a good question. Sorry, it's 5050 split. So in other words, it's about 23 minutes text. 23 minutes, 24 minutes music. So you've got to divide it right the way down the middle and you have to be very careful. It's a, it's a difficult balancing act between meaningful text and storytelling and songs that complement that. So in other words, then the narrative drives the story. So the songs aren't necessarily, you know, it's not about Come Fly With Me and Fly Me to the Moon. It's not Lucky Frank, this one. It's about a man who, you know, who answers accusations and had his heart open and talks about that. So you've got slightly oblique songs like I'm A Fool to Want you, It was a very good year one for My Baby. And then a great celebratory song is that's Life. Oh, we love that. And just goes, you know what, Think what you like, but that's life. Do you know, Richard, it is interesting, isn't it? Because obviously we've said you're a phenomenal singer, but you're also an amazing actor. And best known to American TV audiences as Arnaux in Jane the Virgin, I'll Ask no More and Mr. Benson in House of Lies. But also in the UK, notably two years in Emmerdale, where we actually met, did we not? We did. And, yes, we were married, were we not? We were indeed. If our listeners are wondering, yes, I was in actual fact married to Richards, so he's fondly known as my hubby wifey here in the uk, hubby over there in la. But, Richard, it's interesting, even with that character, you were often cast as these. I mean, I know you're. You're. I know you to be an extraordinarily lovely and generous man, but you're often cast as these characters with slightly dark undertones. Is that more interesting to play? Where do you think that comes from? They are always. Always. I mean, honestly, that's what I'm interested in. Always the psychopath or the murderer or the strange, weird, you know, who appears very charming. But actually, there's an undercurrent. And I don't know why I get cast in these roles so frequently, but it's my go to sort of characterization, if you like. But they are the ones that allow you, you know, they allow you to go places where naturally you couldn't go in everyday life or you wouldn't want to. I'm just working on a. There's a film that we're hopefully shooting in Bali, which is a thriller, horror, thriller. And I get to play, you know, what seems like a perfectly charming British policeman with Undercover Policeman. He turns out to be a real son of a bitch. Oh, my gosh. Do you know, Richard, it's interesting. You do pick incredible locations. So, you know, great to pick something that Shoots in Bali. One of the things that feed your soul. So we've covered kind of music, we've talked about jazz, we haven't really touched on the classical, but we talked about the influence, you know, of your parents in that. But another thing was travel. So, you know, when you are shooting things, do you love the fact that it does often take you to interesting locations? Well, I think I'm a bit of a gypsy. I think there's a real. There's a tension and a friction, I think, within my sort of soul or my character, because I'm actually. I'm a homespun kind of person. I love home and I love to potter and I love to do the simplest of things. Well, you're a cancer crab. It's tomorrow your birthday. Natural fat, Richard, isn't it? Is. It is, yes. So nothing gives me more joy than being at home and cooking. And, you know, that's where I get my real, you know, joy from. However, I have a terrible wanderlust and I have to, you know, it thrills me to pack a bag and get on a plane and go places and see fresh, to be constantly stimulated by change. So it's sort of a strange dichotomy. So, you know, my lifestyle, whilst it's quite disruptive, I love it, you know, it feeds me. I find it sort of rejuvenating. And that's really what it's all about, isn't it? You know, there's five things that feed our soul. It's what keep us going. And, you know, in the show, generally with a variety of guests that we have on and all the very lovely viewers listening at the moment that kindly send in the five things that feed their soul. That's, I think, what we realize. The things that make us similar as human beings, the things that make us different. I love, you know, how you segue also from actor to singer so beautifully, you know, very, very public in a way, in that particular area of your life. But we're just going to talk about another thing that feeds your soul, which is conversely, the solitude. So where does fit in, Richard? I don't know. I think I've always been, you know, the quiet moment. I get a lot of joy from being alone. And I think when you live your life sort of publicly, you know, you see, performing, as far as I'm concerned, is all about giving. Absolutely. It's 100%. And, you know, anything you get back is from that place. You know, you don't do it for reasons of ego. You don't do it because you want people to look at you or applause. It's nothing to do with that. It's about creating and letting it go. And I think that, you know that that in itself is a great thing to do, but the repercussion of that is you. You then need to be alone or I need to be alone. No, I agree that that sort of recovery isn't. It feels such a privilege to be able to give and share with people, but inevitably, therefore, it does require some kind of recovery. We're going to listen to your second choice of. Well, that's absolutely beautiful. It's not unusual. Richard Shelton is here with me. Richard, we talked a little bit before the break about the solitude that you use in order to sort of recover from all the performance energy. And one of the ways that you sort of find that solitude is walking. I mean, you mentioned the location of la. Where do you choose to walk? Well, I mean, LA is a strange place because you've got obviously this huge city which is traffic congested and urban and gritty, as everybody has seen on television or in movies. But there's a great big spine that runs through the middle of it which are the Hollywood Hills. And we don't really have much like it in Britain, but it's these hills, the way you can go hiking. And they're divided into these canyons. So if you can imagine, the hills are covered in pine trees and beautiful walls, desert, like sort of trails. And I mean, you really build up a sweat. You know, you get a. You have to get a lick on and you go up, up, up, and you get these panoramic views over the city and, oh, it's just beautiful. So, you know, when you're up there, you, you've literally got eagles flying overhead. Oh, how gorgeous. Do you sing up there, Richard? Do you, do you, do the Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Music or anything similar? Your equivalent? Strangely not. Oh, what a shame. I had such a gorgeous image of you doing that in my head. Funnily enough, laughter is also one of the five things that feed your soul. So what is your idea of humor, Richard? Well, I mean, I actually have a very dark sense of humor, to be honest with you. I, I like the Things that we're really not supposed. I suppose, in the same way as I'm an actor and I like the dark side of, you know, to portray dark, complicated characters. I really like dark humor. It's satire. And I mean, let's say, for example, the League of Gentlemen, there's a program I find that deeply funny. It's not everybody's cup of tea, but I like, you know, wry, witty observation, quick, quick sort of repartee. How do you find the difference being in LA and being in England, do you find a big difference between the American humor and the British humor? Well, much. You have to be careful in LA because much of it is humorless. You have to deep. You have to. You know, that I would say is something that I miss terribly about home is that, you know, you can't just have that repartee with, I don't know, somebody you meet in the daily course of your life. Let's say you bar a restaurant or, you know, sometimes we can have such funny, observational, you know, repartee. And in la, it's largely missing because they don't. They don't get, you know, what we're about. I do miss that about home. I miss it very much. Well, listen, we're glad we're going to be seeing you very soon, Richard. Natural fact, because. Just back to your show for a minute. So a show, a brand new show, a world premiere of the show that you've written for Edinburgh. So Sinatra raw, it's called. Anybody wanting to get tickets, I would advise you to get them in advance because I think it's been touted as the top four must see shows of 2018 by the Edinburgh Evening News. It's going to be on at the Frankenstein Pub, which is the George IV Bridge in the Old Town again. So really showcasing a different side to Frank Sinatra. You know, as we look through your journey, these kind of serendipitous connections that you've had all the way along, Richard, you know, to do with Frank Sinatra, there's been so many signs. Have you ever felt that you've almost been guided in some way on your journey? Yes, I have, and it makes me feel a bit crazy. And, you know, sometimes I think how there have been so many, many, many, many sort of guidelines and guide, you know, signs on the way, but I have felt a strange connection to that energy. I think that's a good way of putting it. So, yes, I have, but it's not something I take lightly or take for granted because I'm very respectful of him. And the legacy and you know, being able to perform this material. But I think it's more that, that, that connection, that listening to your soul, to the intangible. And that's what we kind of spend a little bit of time looking at on the show. You know, just, just, just, just following when, when you have, following your feelings, following, you know, what, what feels good. And you've always, as you said, had such a great feeling and respect towards him and, and I guess what he, as a performer and his work has allowed you to achieve as a performer. Completely. Absolutely. You know, and I mean people say sometimes oh, but he was this and he was that. Well, we're all these things, they're all, we're all colors of the rainbow. We're all, we all have light and shade and we all have, you know, our good characteristics and the other side and that's what makes us human beings. And I particularly like the way he maneuvers through his life. I find it very inspiring. And I think once we realize. I think you're so right, Richard. Once we realize life isn't really about getting it all perfect, it's about perhaps accumulating whatever skills or strategies in order to help us navigate the challenges that inevitably come to everybody, but with as much grace as possible. Would you ever have believed when you were sitting in Wolverhampton as a child that you would now be in LA about to release Lost and Found, this stunning album, about to star in Edinburgh in your brand new play? No simple answer. I think I dreamt. I think it was my dream. I have a saying in life, you know, if you never have a dream, you can never have a dream come true. I love that. And I think it's very important to dream for all of us. I'm not saying that you go mad dreaming about the most ridiculous things, but if you have a dream, there's something you want to try and achieve in life, do it. Because we only come, we come this way but once. Do you know, I hope Richard, people come and see your show because that is one thing, that and this is your Sinatra me show. The one thing about it, it is so uplifting, it is so encouraging, inspiring to all of us to follow our dreams. And we're going to talk a little bit later on in the show about, you know, thought creating our reality. So if we don't think it, if we don't dream it, there's no possibility it can necessarily happen. So listen, we thank you enormously for being here. We wish you enormous luck with the show. I love that because I think there in actual fact, just saying what we were talking about earlier, it's all about the vibration. It's about your thought creating reality. It's not so much about the actions. So I think really worth being vigilant. How much time we actually spend worrying. Of course, all of us, we talk about here on the Universal Soul show, sharing the experience of being human. All of us have challenges and issues, but if we understand that whole idea that our thoughts are do create our reality, we come to realize that in actual fact, worrying is simply using our imagination to create something we don't want.
