Dr. William Bloom, no less, a modern Western mystic, considered by many to be Britain's leading and most experienced mind, body, spirit teacher. Obviously we're called the Universal Soul show and I'm delighted to say that my guest today, there is no one more qualified than he to talk about soul, and that is, of course, Dr. William Bloom. William, lovely to have you here. Thank you very much for having me on your program. Well, when I had a little look through William, your career, I mean, it's hard to know really how to define you and name you because you've been so many things. So, you know, British author and educator, founder, director of the Spiritual Companions Trust, co founded alternatives program at St. James's Church. But one of the things that just excites me so much is the most recent work of yours where you've been pioneering the development of the first ofqual regulated qualification in spirituality. How has that come about? William, how did the first ofqual qualification in spirituality come about? Well, I tell you what, let's go back to, to when I'm 4 years old and I'm sitting in the garden outside the block of flat screen with some friends. I'm looking at the blue of the sky and just going, oh, I wonder if the blue of the sky is God's eye. And then going to church, school, church and people talking about stuff and me going, no, no. They don't quite understand that the building is not God. It's all out there. It's everything. So from early on, like many, many children, I had this sense that there was a wonder and a beauty and a kind of magic to life. And, you know, it's really interesting, William, because I think, you know, having a little boy myself, sensing that in them, but I'm not sure how much is there to actually support and help that transition into grown up life, would you say? Well, I think that you're kind of pinpointing what happened for me, which was there was having that experience, like a lot of children, of the magic of life. And then suddenly there was church or synagogue or temple and it was like all boxed in and there were usually men dressed in funny clothes being quite pompous about it all. And I'm going, no, this is not quite it. So in a sense, over the decades, what I was trying to do is develop, help develop a way in which people could access a kind of very natural spirituality without having to get caught up in dogma and faith and belief and worship. There are jewels, wonderful jewels in all the religious traditions. But there's also this horror of dogma in my way or the highway. And I think one of the things, William, you know, for example, in your most recent book, the Power of Modern Spirituality, it is this modernity, the slant that you bring to it, the access, it seems very permissive, your way with it. You allow people to be wherever they're at with it. Well, there's a yay and a nay there. The yay is, look, it's the 21st century, we live on a small planet and we can see what everybody's up to. So the idea that anybody, say in Tibet or South America or Canterbury can say, this is the only way of doing spirituality is stupid nowadays, right? We're not geographically isolated. We're all connected. So we can see that the old way of doing it doesn't work now in relation to, yes, anybody can do it in their own way, but there are still some givens. For example, one of the givens would be don't hurt people. Love, compassion. So there are some rules. Be conscious. There are some givens which are universal. But at the same time, people need to be liberated from the cells, the prisons of particular beliefs and to understand that they're empowered to walk their own paths. Let's look at your first one of five that feeds your soul, William. And that of course, is meditation. So I assume that's obviously incredibly important to you. How do you place that for people that perhaps have no experience of it at all or what the value of it is. Number one, meditation ain't for everybody. It works for me because originally I came to it because it was hugely self soothing. When I was highly strung and slightly wound up, it was hugely self soothing. And in the middle of just sitting quietly, I found all these other things going on in my consciousness to do with connecting with the beauty of life, witnessing myself. And I think that's a natural behavior for many, many people. They like to take quiet moments, they like to have small oases from the noise of life, and they just find themselves sitting quietly. And that then develops into a more consistent meditation pract. I don't like meditation being considered something special and elite. I think it's something that's quite a natural human behavior. But again, I love that. We'll talk about a little bit more in the course you've developed how accessible you make something like meditation rather than having to follow any particular form. We're going to listen to one of your first choices of music in a moment, which is by the Grateful Dead. You were very brave in terms of you let me choose which track for you. So I think they're all fantastic, but Friend of the Devil I love. What is it about their music that draws you to it? The Grateful Dead did this wonderful and extraordinary mixture of jazz, funk, country, rock, soul, and just went. And a lot of improvisation. And they just go off on one. And there were lots of weird descamps in it, which just absolutely transported my consciousness and the consciousness of lots and lots of people. Let's have a listen, William. William, before the break, we were talking about how meditation worked for you, but I love this kind of generosity you have in not really being prescriptive in terms of it has to be meditation, it has to be this way, it has to be that way. The second thing on your five things that feed your soul. For example, you've got watching TV with a family. So it seems whilst you have incredible knowledge and background and, you know, academic capacity and you've written huge numbers of books translated into 16 languages, the simple things in life, you, you also seem to massively appreciate watching TV with a family. Yeah, because, I mean, isn't that just for some of us anyway, isn't it just lovely just chilling out with people? You love watching something on the box and, you know, two or 300 years ago, might have been watching the fire. Years later, we've got this wonderful television thing with all kinds of fabulous programs on it. And I think that just hanging out with your family can be beautiful, can be a nightmare for other people. Of course, I love that, whichever way it goes for you. Moving on to your third element that features her working on useful projects. And I just want to really focus for a moment, I mean, to achieve an ofqual regulated qualification to, in something that's potentially as, you know, evocative and difficult in a way intangible to pin down as spirituality. That takes some doing. So how have you approached that and what are you trying to achieve with this, William, for people out there? Well, number one, there was a huge Amount of groundwork done beforehand. For example, at Duke University, where they do research into the health benefits of religion and spirituality, There are nearly 4,000 scholarly, peer reviewed papers looking at the evidence for the health benefits. So that we're not approaching it from a ooey, ooey, flaky or religious dogmatic perspective. We're actually coming at it from the ground up. We know there are health benefits and now we're looking at how do people actually achieve them through spirituality. One way that people do this through spirituality is they connect with the wonder and energy of life. And people do that. Singing in church, meditating with their children, walking in the park, singing, dancing, yoga, doing crafts, playing football, watching football. Very relevant at the moment. Watching football and doing well in football. Did you watch it last night, William, by the way? Oh, the craziness of the Colombian boys. Weren't they naughty? They were. I mean, it might not be last night by the time you hear this, but of course we're recording this the day after England managed to have the successful penalty shootout. Yes, there was a bit of naughtiness, but it is interesting when you say that about football, collective experience, when you feel that you're collected to something perhaps broader and deeper than the isolation of the individual. So if people were interested, say, looking more into this is it for them, obviously they could look on your website www.williambloom.com but what form is this going to take for people? I'd tell you what would be better for them if they go to your spiritualhealth.org yourspiritualhealth.org yourspiritualhealth dot org and there's absolutely free are some wonderful resources, including a kind of questionnaire that will lead people into unpacking for themselves what works best for them. And so this isn't excluding people on any grounds. It's access all areas, regardless of. I mean, what would you say, people that kind of say, hang on, where does spirituality sit next to religion? Is spirituality religion? Spirituality sits inside religion. For example, in Christianity, when people go to church, some of those people are having very, very deep experience of connection. You know, when they sing in choir, they have a deep experience. When they pray, they have a deep experience. And that personal experience is the spirituality inside religion. But spirituality is not just inside religion. It's also sitting next to a stream or sitting with your children or reading. You know, it doesn't just sit. And the problem has been historically that religion has tried to monopolize and say, no, this is the only safe space where you can do spirituality. Whereas in actual fact, just because you're alive, you're part of it. What I love that I hear coming out of this, William, is that there's an inherent tolerance in the approach you take. And in a world where intolerance appears to be everywhere, in almost every dimension, anything that brings greater understanding, greater compassion, greater tolerance of things that are maybe not perceived as the same as what we believe has to be a good thing. It's interesting you put as your fourth thing being in developmental groups as student or teacher. I'm proud to say witness firsthand. Having been part of this course, you are an extraordinary teacher in terms of when you are then the capacity of student. How do you approach that? How do you shift between the two placements? Number one, just a reality check. There are some students that really don't like me or my style, which is great because it's a free world and a free universe. I like being in groups. I like being with human beings that are reflective and good in a good humored way. Working on their shit and improving themselves. I like that. I like it in the same way that some people like working in a garden or working with animals. For me, there's creative juice in that. It doesn't matter whether I'm the student or on the facilitator teacher. I just love being with a group of people where there's consciousness about the fact that between birth and death, the big game is can we develop our hearts and our consciousness. And, you know, that's one of the things we talk about on the show, sharing the experience of being human. Well, something that we're going to listen to now is your next voice in music. We've been talking about the person centred spirituality, William, that you have really championed for so long now. This program that you have had validated by ofqual, it's just gone live, which people will find it your spiritualhealth.org just tell us. It's being received in quite an interesting and exciting manner by factors and sections that we maybe might have thought might have been a bit reticent to it. Tell me the kind of reaction it's getting. Okay, number one, it's your spiritualhealth.org and that's where the free resources are. People can get a taste of our approach. No commitment, just taste it. And there's a lot, there's a lot there. And then beneath that, if people want to go deeper, we've got the actual qualification. The interesting and crucial thing here is that people in health care and education and social services are looking at our approach and going aha, okay, so here's a way that we can practically help people improve their health, improve their mental well being. And people already feeling good will feel even better if they follow this approach without walking into the minefield of faith traditions and religious beliefs and all the conflicts and dogmas and prejudices that can be met there. And the benefits, William, we know to be tangible and experiential, don't we? Well, as I said earlier, there are these nigh on 4000 peer reviewed scholarly papers indicating that people who are into religion and spirituality live longer, are generally happier, have better survival rates, have less addiction problems, all that kind of stuff. There's a clear evidence base for this. That's not something we need to argue about. That's clearly evidenced. But what we're looking at here is how do we empower adults in the modern world to engage in spirituality in a way that benefits their health and also benefits the community. And because it's such a contemporary and general approach, it really fits in well for modern hr, social services, education, healthcare. So any of those people are welcome to go and take a look. And I suppose also we've just got to a point in our being and our existence where perhaps it is just needed. I mean, in your journey, sort of through life, William, have you. Have you felt this coming, as it were? Do you feel the time is now for this? More than ever before, I move between a spectrum of, oh, no, it's getting worse. Look at politics, look at the world, look at the vulgarity, look at the commercial stuff. And another part of me goes, wow, isn't it fantastic? 8 billion people on the planet, we actually haven't destroyed it. There is a high awareness of the problems, right? And humanity is going through this huge growth spurt with huge challenges. And in the middle of it, human beings are not stupid. They're waking up in a way that I think is quite beautiful. But it looks challenging, like growth spurts always do look challenging. That's so interesting, whatever form they come in. And it's, you know, part of, I love, you know, you being the authority on soul with this show called the Universal Soul show, because I think, you know, we fundamentally like to have an ultimate belief that the world is benevolent and it allows you to trust in something that gives you just a little bit of support. You know, we don't have to do this all on our own. And I suppose that's the biggest thing, or one of the biggest things that the whole thrust of spirituality does for me. It gives that kind of collective, that sense of community because we are intrinsically part of nature, are we not? So. Well, listen, historically, culture by culture, without exception, when women and men have decided to take time out to connect with the wonder and energy of life, the cosmos, the stars, nature without exception, they give it a thumbs up. Yeah, the experience is ecstatic, heavenly, divine. You know, it. That is the core experience of connecting with this, whatever this mystery is called. You know, it is. It is extraordinarily benevolent. That's not to deny that human beings can be pathologically horrible. Right there's not to deny that. But the thing is that if you connect with the love and compassion that we can find in universe, that actually makes us better able to deal with the suffering and to be of service. And that's really what it's about, isn't it? Making the shared time on earth, whatever it might be, together, as positive as it possibly can be. Well, we are going to just briefly talk about your fifth thing that features riding your motorbike. So what kind of motorbike is it, William? Well, I'm ashamed to say I've got a BMW, because first BMW I've had, I've normally been on Japanese bikes and it's 1200 RS, which is a kind of sports tourer. And I've been on bikes since I was 16. I used to bicycle to school in central London, so when I was 10 years old, you'd find me bicycling around Hammersmith Broadway and Hyde Park Corner. Wow. And now you've upscaled to the motorbike. Well, I'm trying to reassure listeners who are frightened of bikes or frightened for me that what's built into me is a kind of radar that's aware that everybody's out to kill me. And I find it very soothing to be out on a motorbike. It gets my endorphins rolling. It keeps me awake. And you have to be very grounded and centered to be safe on a bike. I think you certainly feel like a part of the world, that's no doubt about that. Your last choice in music, William, is definitely soothing as well.
