Hello and welcome to Talking Travel with myself, Kay, on women's radio station. This is your weekly show for travel tips, inspiration and fascinating guests. Right, well, on today's show, we're off to Madrid, the Spanish capital. Madrid has always been playing catch up with Barcelona, but right now it's enjoying its moment of glory because Barcelona, with its brilliant beaches, football team and world class art, architecture and design, it may have been once regarded as one of the most desirable places on the planet, but cool never stays in one place for long. Fast forward to 2018 and Madrid has upped its game. It's now bursting with atmospheric barrios, filled with friendly matrilineos who who need no invitation to tell you how great their city is. Womensradiostn hello, my name is David. I am a Spaniard and I am living in Madrid since more than 20 years ago. I would like to introduce my city with the idea that if you decide to visit Madrid in the future, you could enjoy a lot this very nice city of Spain. First that I want to tell you is that although I am living in Madrid since a long time ago, I was born in the south of Spain, in Andalusia. And this is something very curious because I want to tell you that the first fact that is nice of Madrid is that it's a melting point of all Spain. So the majority of the people of the Spanish people that they are living in Madrid, they weren't born in Madrid. So Madrid, it's a very open city that it's very proud, it's proud to have a diversity of people of Spain living there. Practically few people living in Madrid were born there. So this is the first thing that I think that is nice. I'm sure that being you from other countries, you are going to feel very comfortable in the city. The second thing that I want to tell you about Madrid is that we don't have any special place like maybe London with the Big Bang or maybe Paris with Eiffel Tower. No, in Madrid we have a lot of places that identify the city, but no one is more relevant than other. So, for example, we have the Puerta del Sol in the city center, maybe the most popular place in Madrid. We have Plaza Mayor or the area of the Royal palace or Puerta Alcala or a lot of places in Madrid that in some way has the meaning, like maybe the big bank in London or the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Other thing that I want to tell you is that Madrid, like a mix of all the people of Spain, we have a very, very nice gastronomy. And especially if we think about tapas, Madrid is a perfect place, very representative of the country. So practically any bar, any restaurant of the city, you are going to receive tapas. The best, the most popular place could be the neighborhood of Latina. Especially weekends in that place, you could find a lot of bars and restaurants where you could enjoy the best tapas of the city. More things about Madrid. Maybe you are thinking about shopping. We have a lot of shops to sell everything. If you are looking for luxurious shops, you have a special place in Madrid, the neighborhood of Salamanca. You have there the most luxurious shops of the country. Also, if you want to buy more like Zara, Mango, all these kind of Spanish companies, you can go to the area of Granbia in the city center, Granbilla, and all the streets around that area. More things about Madrid. Well, museums, of course, museums. We have three big museums, some of the most important of the world. The first is the Museo del Prado, a classical one. Second is the Thyssen Bornemisa, that is another classical one. And then if you like the modern art, you can go to the Museum of Reina Sophia. Practically these three museums are five minutes between them working. But of course, maybe the most popular museum or the most visited museum in Madrid is the Bernabeu. Sure, that you like football, you don't know that. But if you are Spanish and you visit other countries, when you say that you are Spanish, all the people automatically say Real Madrid or Barca. Okay, Madrid is the place to visit the real Madrid in. I have a lot of friends that they are not Spanish. And when they decide to come to visit Madrid, they ask me, oh, David, could you tell us a special place where only Spanish people go? Not very touristic. Not the very, very nice place for Spanish. Well, I have to tell you that that doesn't exist in Madrid. The nice places in Madrid are for all people. So sure that you are going to find foreigners and Spanish people. For example, Plaza de Santana, it's a very nice place for tapas and restaurants only. You are going to see there are foreigners and Spanish people mixed between them or Plaza Mayor. So don't think about any special place in Madrid, because all the city is open for all the people. So I just want to tell you that I would like that you could visit Madrid and enjoy one of the most beautiful cities of the country that is a very good example of what is Spain. But for me, Madrid isn't really about sightseeing per se, it's about exploring, taking lazy strolls through flamenco soundtracked cobbled streets, dawdling the day away in an elegant cafe and eating a long late lunch in a tapas bar. We're going to hear next from Olivia. Now, Olivia is a Swiss lady who moved to London and has now swapped London for Madrid. So over to Olivia, who's going to explain why she chose to relocate to Madrid and what she loves about the Spanish capital. Hi, I'm Olivia. I'm half Swiss and half British. I've been living in Madrid now for nine months. It has been on all levels a wonderful experience. There is no doubt about that. The reason why I left London is I had the possibility to work remotely for my London based company, giving me a great amount of flexibility and the possibility to improve on my intermediate level in Spanish. It's been great. I've been able to chat in Spanish every day. It's improved quite greatly and at the same time it's enabled me to learn a lot more about the Spanish culture, mingle with local people and I always had this curiosity to see how it is to actually live in the southern part of Europe. So this was always a dream of mine. So I've combined my dream and working for the same company. I've been very lucky. I've met wonderful people. I love them, the way Spanish take the time to live. They spend a lot of time outside, in the streets, on the plazas, enjoying a sangria, but just enjoying life, possibly more than I've seen in London, which is what always drew me to the southern parts of Europe. We've heard from Madrid expat Livia. So I think the real thing we should have learned from them is why waste your weekend slumped on the sofa watching yet another episode of Love Island? I know you love it, James. I'll produce it. Don't you love Love Island? Yes, but stop watching Love island, get on an affordable EasyJet flight and go and check out an interesting city like Madrid. Make no mistake, in my fantasy game of where would I like to live for three months? Madrid, with its head heady mix of culinary feasts, cultural offerings, buzzy nightlife, friendly locals, it would be on my list. But what about you? Where would be on your list, James? Madrid. Yeah, definitely. Could you live there for three months? Or is there a different destination that maybe we'll visit in a different program? Well, I'm a big fan of the Far East. I definitely will live at Far east, but if I had to pick somewhere in Europe, somewhere in Spain, and definitely Madrid would be on that list. Never been before and would love to go and check it out. I mean, you speak very highly of it, so there you go. We are all smitten by the Spanish capital. But while Madrid might be known for its friendly locals and the tapas and all the museums we've mentioned, it's also very much celebrated for what do we think? Is it football? Maybe it's football. It's real Madrid. They're a force to be reckoned with, I think, aren't they? There's a lot of controversy around them at the moment. Zidane sensationally quit Real Madrid. He was the manager and he quit just five days after leading them to their third consecutive Champions League title with a 31 win over Liverpool. Did you see that coming or were you like the rest of us? I didn't see that coming. I just want to say that's the first time anyone in history has ever done that. He's won three consecutive Champions League titles. And the fact that he just left like that, I thought was bizarre. Like, why would you do that? You know, perhaps he just achieved everything he felt. Yeah, I get that. I mean, in a way, who wants to be a football manager? I sometimes think. What do you mean? Everyone wants to be a football manager. Do you think? Yeah. There's like a multi million pound game that you can play. And we're going to profile now on talking travel, the star players to keep an eye on, they're Real Madrid players. They're also featuring in the current FIFA World Cup. So, number one, who do we think or anyone that you're particularly watching out for in the World Cup? What, like a Spanish Real Madrid player or just a Real Madrid player? Just a Real Madrid player. Who's featuring in the. The World Cup. Well, I think the obvious answer is number seven, Ronaldo. Yes. Yeah, the five time balloon Du. How do you say it? Balloon d'? Or. Balloon d'. Or. You're my pronunciation. Yeah. He may be 33, but he show no signs of slowing down. I think that game, the first game they played Spain, Portugal against Spain, it kind of proved you write Ronaldo off at your peril, you know, I can't believe he's that old, can you? I mean, he's like, no, what a physical specimen. I tell you what specimen. You know, he's in unbelievable shape for a guy of 33. You know, that's generally when you, as a football player, things start to decline. Decline. Yeah, generally any age your 30s, you start to. Yeah, it's like aging process catches up on you. You don't mean it. Well, I'm talking someone that's far too young to know this, but there we go. But. Yeah, I just. I just don't believe it. I just don't believe how amazing he is. He must, like, his exercise regime must be unbelievable. Well, Rio Ferdinand had some great insights on the BBC commentary and he said when he played with him at Madrid, used to go around to Ronaldo's house in Manchester and it was like a circus. He had a dietitian, like a whole team around him, therapists, the whole thing. And he said he was the first footballer who really paid the money and invested in himself to take him to the next. Next level. When. No, I mean, everyone's doing that these days, but back then, it wasn't the. The thing. Yeah, well, it pays off. Clearly. Clearly pays off very well. Who would. Who would you shine a spotlight on then, for Real Madrid? Who would be your number one? I mean, I know I still featured in that. Yeah, you still. You'd steal the obvious, but Sergio Ramos. Yeah, yeah. He's The Reals outspoken captain also featuring obviously very highly in the, in the Spanish team. He's one of Real Madrid's most experienced players. So I think he'll be trying to lift the World cup this, this summer as well. But let us know who you think are the top Real Madrid players to keep an eye out for in the World Cup. Who would you, who would you single out? See, I'm trying to think. I'm thinking Marcelo. World Cup. Marcelo's a good one. Yeah. Brazil. Do you think he's the best left back in the world? Possibly. No. Hell no. No. Hell no. Danny Rose, Tottenham Hospitals Bias. Well, Marcelo, as we mentioned, he's playing for Brazil in the World Cup. He's been at Real Madrid for over 11 years and during that time he's lifted 18 trophies while entertaining football fans around the globe with his brilliant skill. Pacey attacking and all round excellence. I'd say so He's a crucial part of Madrid's defence along with Ramos. And another player to mention is Rafael Varane, the other center back alongside Ramos, the Frenchman. More of a recent addition to the Real Madrid squad, but still a very, very good player and someone to look forward to. What about the German guy, Tony? Tony Cruz? Yeah. How would you rate him? I mean, after his performance on I think Friday, was it not very good? Because that was terrible. He played very, very bad against Mexico. Yeah, but he's very good for Real Madrid. He sort of gives that balance to the team, I think. Yeah, he plays his role at Real Madrid. It must just be such a tough team because there's so many amazing footballers to actually play and perform. You'd have to be at such a high level and that's the thing with Real Madrid. So many players to keep an eye out for.
