Hello and welcome to Talking Travel, your weekly show for travel tips and inspiration on women's radio station with myself, Kay. Now on today's program, we're making for Moscow. Why? Well, because with the World cup around the corner, all eyes will be on Russia's capital. And if you're headed for Moscow and you're not a football fan, you know, you can still make the most of Moscow because it's got world famous theaters, cutting edge art galleries and late night kitsch bars. So, tip number one, the Red Square. Sure, it's a bit of a tourist cliche, but the Red Square, familiar from Soviet era demonstrations of tank and soldier power, must be a starting point for any visit to Moscow. Make no mistake, if you visit Moscow and you don't see the Red Square, it's like traveling to Paris and missing out the Eiffel Tower. Tip number two, the Bolshai Theatre. It's a quintessential experience to see a ballet performance while in Russia. But be warned, tickets to see the Bolshai, that's the most famous ballet company based at the Bolshy Theatre. They'll probably set you back around 300 pound, if not more. I'm looking at our producer, James in the studio. Would you pay that, James? No. But you know what, James? It is worth it, listeners, for the plush interior, particularly the pink and golden walls outside the Grand Circle. But if you fail to get a seat or you don't want to pay that kind of money, I can't really blame you. You can still see inside the refurbished auditorium for a fraction of the price. Tip number three, you have to check out the Kremlin's Armory tower. That's essential viewing because the fortress of the Kremlin was the seat of power for centuries and it's the heart of Moscow. The basic ticket gives you access to the inner squares, but we recommend buying the extra ticket to the armoury. It's a Russian tower full of jewel, Faberge eggs, jewel encrusted crowns and Bibles and gowns worn by empresses and tsars. Now, tip number four, St. Basil's Cathedral. Now, this was originally constructed in the mid 16th century and it looms majestically near the Kremlin in Moscow. And it stood watch over countless historical and political events in Russia's history. The St. Basil's Cathedral is a crazy confusion of colors, patterns and shapes and it's the culmination of a style that is unique to Russian architecture. But if you are going to make a beeline for St. Basil's Cathedral, don't visit on Tuesday. It's open every day except for Tuesday. Tip number five, the Russian Orthodox Church. Now this is one of Russia's most iconic, not to mention eccentric sites. It's a UNESCO World Heritage listed site and it dates back to the 16th century. The Russian Orthodox Church was designed to resemble a bonfire so its electric domes act as flickering flames. And legend has it that Tsar Ivan the terrible, upon seeing St. Basil's for the very first time, demanded that the architect's eyes be cut out so he could never create such a something so beautiful again. So that's definitely a must see the Russian Orthodox Church in the middle of Moscow. Tip number six, Lenin's Mausoleum. Now you have to visit Lenin's mausoleum in Red Square to see the embalmed body of the former communist leader where he lies in state under fierce armed guards. But no messing about is permitted here. Visitors are expected to remain quiet and respectful when near the body or risk the wrath of a stern security and you'll find the mausoleum at the foot of the Kremlin wall. Now our final tip for Moscow. You've got to tour the metro system. Touring the metro system is a must do not only for the opportunity to survey Russian dress. Think full length furs during the Arctic winters, but for the decoration and design. In one of the stations you'll find life sized bronze statues of heroic working class figures while at another you'll find ceiling mosaics depicting Soviet scenes of aircraft and athletes. Today we're shining the spotlight on Moscow because all eyes are on Moscow as the FIFA World cup is being staged in the Russian capital and also other cities in Russia. Now, the festival of football that only happens every four years is set to kick off in a matter of days. That's right, the highly anticipated 2018 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that brings together the finest footballers on the planet is almost upon us. But if you're not a paid up member of the football tribe, fret not, because women's radio station has your back. And myself and our producer James, you're a big football fan, aren't you? Massive. So we're going to help the listeners get clued up really on the football tournament that everyone is talking about. You're in good hands. Excellent. So first up, when is the World cup? It is June 14th. Right. Excellent. Four points. The World cup kicks off on the 14th of June. That's when host nation Russia takes takes on Saudi Arabia and It runs until the 15th of July, which is the day of the final. Do you remember who the reigning champions are? It's Germany. It is. That's right. Germany are the reigning champions after winning in Brazil back in 2014. And didn't they win, like, 7 2, wasn't it? Or something like that? 82 against Brazil. Oh, that was really embarrassing. But I think in the final, they beat Argentina. Oh, yeah, I think. But I remember that. And the semis was Brazil. They embarrassed Brazil, the host nation, in the semis. So where is the World Cup? Well, as we've mentioned many times, it's being held in Russia, which is the largest country in the world. How many people do you think call Russia home, James? Is it a billion or is it a million? Give me a. Give me a rough. A million, but not a million. Like five million, maybe. How much is England? Oh, wow. Keep going, keep going. Russia. Wait for. This is home to approximately 144.3 million people. 144. Wow. Yeah. Largest country in the world. So a lot more than England. And the tournament is being staged there for the very first time. Now, why should you watch the World Cup? Well, it's the biggest, most compelling event in the sporting world. And if you don't follow the competition, you're letting the rest of the world go to the party without you. How many people do you think watched the 2014 World cup final? Oh, I know. This is billions. This isn't millions. This is billions of people watching it. Yeah, you're right. Yeah. Yeah. It's well over 1 billion people. So hugely popular. You'll get to see some of the greatest footballers in the world work their magic. And you can also watch some intriguing storylines Unfurl, for example. You know, Lionel Messi is an absolute ace for Barcelona. He's played for his national side, Argentina, many, many times since he was, like, 16, I think. And they haven't, in his lifetime won a World cup once. It's probably his last thing. Right. He needs. Exactly. So maybe this year he can stop his country's World cup rot. If not England, I'm rooting for Argentina. Okay, Absolutely. So which players will be in Russia? We just mentioned Lionel Messi. He'll be there. As will the Portuguese superst star, Cristiano Ronaldo, who also doesn't have a World Cup. No, you're right. He has the Euros. He has the Euros. He doesn't have a World Cup. So both of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. That's true. They'll be there and they're reaching the end of their careers, probably, aren't they? So they'll be looking. This is it for them. One of the two. This is it. No pressure, but no pressure. If you're listening, South American stars such as Suarez and Neymar, they'll be playing for Uruguay in Brazil. Who else are you looking forward to seeing, James? I mean, as a die hard Tottenham Hotspurs fan, I know who you're going to say. I'm going to have to give a shout out to my man. Harry Kane, captain of the England squad. Should he be captain? Is he a bit young? Has he captained the spurs side? He hasn't captained the spurs side. We've got Hugo Lloris for that. But who would you captain instead? What about the guy that got the man of the match at the friendly against Nigeria recently? The Chelsea guy? Cahill. Cahill, yeah. But he's not. Because he captains Chelsea. He captains Chelsea, but he's not that. He's not a consistent member of the England squad. Whereas Harry Kane is, you know, definitely not Dele Alli, though. No. Or the one Raheem Sterling. No, no. Too young, too brash and eccentric. You need someone a bit down to earth and sensible. Like Harry Kane. Okay, well, give him a fair crack of the whip. Well, we can reveal that Russia's 2018 mascot is Zabi Vacar. I'm not sure that's how you pronounce it, but it's a wolf whose name means the one who scores. And this mascot was chosen following a vote in Russia which saw 1 million people cast their vote. Popular wolf, then. Very popular wolf. Another question for you. You're probably thinking, is var being used? What do you think? Yes, it is. You're right. You're right, you're right. Absolutely. FIFA confirmed earlier this year that video assistant referees will be used during the World Cup. It's not possible that in 2018, everyone in their living room knows a few seconds after the play where the referee has a mistake and the referee doesn't explain the FIFA president. So, yes, var will be in use during the World Cup. Sensible. Yes, sensible. I think so. Another question that might be on your lips. What Bull will be used at the 2018 World Cup. Like what brand or what ball specifically? I guess brand. Brand and ball. There you go. Isn't it? I think it's an Adidas ball. You know your stuff. It's an Adidas ball. Or Adidas if I was American. But you're not, you're a Brit. Adidaspool, but I don't know the actual specifics. Well, half a mark there, James, is the Adidas Telstar and it's designed to be a modern interpretation of the iconic 1970 Telstar Ball. And actually it's the only ball that has six panels in an innovative design, whereas the original tail star apparently had 32 panels fastened together. Doesn't mean too much to me, but if you're into your stats, there you go. The big question now, how can you watch the World Cup? Well, ideally you'd be on a plane right now out to Moscow. And you can be actually, because if you haven't scored, tickets look to the last minute sales phase. It runs until the 15th of July and these tickets will be implemented on a first come, first serve basis. Big price range for the tickets, though. What do you think we're looking at? 100 to 400 for, like where you want to sit in the stadiums. Yeah. Well, that's not too bad actually. You're right. They start around 79 pounds for a second group match and they go up to about 829 pound for the final. 800. So we were talking off air earlier about Eric Clapton tickets costing £200. Earlier in the show we'd see the ballet for 300. Yes. So for all this, you know, experiences, cost I think is the key here. But if you're a Russian resident, you can obtain cheaper tickets. Prices start at just 17 pounds. So big, big discrepancy there. How do I become a Russia resident? Bit late now. Now. And lastly, if you can't make it to Moscow, what can you do? You can go to the pub and watch it there. Is that what you'll be doing? That is what I'm doing. That's what we're doing. You're absolutely right. UK can watch the World cup matches on both the BBC and itv. The first game, which is. Do we remember what England first game for? Yeah. Oh, no, the first game for the World Cup. Oh, it's Russia versus Saudi Arabia. You can pronounce that better than I can. That's why I got you to answer that. That will be aired on ITV while BBC's coverage begins the next day. So I think all that remains to be said is let the countdown begin. So I think it's appropriate to have a final song. We're going to play one of the absolute football classics.
