It's an absolute pleasure to have you listening wherever you are in the world and we know you are literally global out there. We're here broadcasting on women's radio station now, the Universal Soul Show. This particular show we're going to explore anything to do with the experience of being human. So we're not just going to talk about the tangible, tricky bits where we hope, you know, we're going to share some of life's problems and grapplings, but we also want to talk about some of the more sort of extra dimensional bit. So the two questions that I've already put out there, and you've been brilliant coming back through already giving me lots of answers, are what does your soul or spirituality mean to you? What connects you, what makes you feel great? And it's amazing the diversity of answers you're giving. So do keep them coming. So in the show I'm going to have a guest each time. Now, without further ado, I'm delighted to say that today as my very first guest on the show, we've got the multi award winning blues Diva award, also known as the ambassador for the risque blues, we've got the wonderful Dana Gillespie. Hi there, Sarah. Hi, Dana. An absolute pleasure to have you here. Now I have to say you've been involved in recording, I think over 65 albums, you've made films, you've been on stage. I mean, you've had a prolific career and it's interesting. I said had a prolific career but to be honest, I think it should have been having a prolific career. I mean, you just haven't stopped. What do you put that down to? Well, do you know, I put it down to the music. It's the music that keeps me alive, the music that makes me breathe and just going out there and spreading joy. Hopefully. I do it because I actually feel that one should uplift one, you know, wherever you go in the world, you should uplift people. And I do it musically. I do it through talking as well. Talking to people and being nice and smiling and cheerful. And we felt that in the station today. Dana, actually you've really set the tone for the first show. It's interesting actually, music is what you picked as the very first thing on your list of five things that feed your soul. Is it right that you actually started as a folk singer? How did all that begin? Well, actually I started writing things on the piano when I was 11 and knew straight away that I didn't want to be playing music that other people had written. In other words, notes. I'm not very good at reading notes. And by the time I was 15, I'd also started to learn. I was a drummer as well. I played drums and guitar. So I went out as a folk singer because I couldn't afford a band and folk was in in the early 60s. And so I just. But I always knew I wanted to do more than that. So I did, along the route, dreadful sort of hammer films and things, dressed in chamois leather. I mean, that's what I love, how expansive your career's been. I believe in the late 60s and 70s, your acting career almost sort of took over. Is it right that you played the first Mary Magdalene in the original production of Jesus Christ Superstar? That's right, I did. And I knew. Well, I mean, I did it for a year, actually. I left because I had to have my knee operated. I used to snow ski champion and I was British water ski champion for four years in my teens. British water ski champion. I mean, how did you manage to fit that in then? I just. I was always very independent and did loads of things, but I did do the first year of Superstar, but at the same time, I just. Myself and David Bowie, who I've known since I was 14 and he was about 17 and he was called David Jones. Then we just got a fantastic manager who then said, you know, right, everyone must leave for America. Bowie left a bit before me with him and his wife and child. And then I finished off my album, which was the third album I'd ever done with Bowie's actually on it, and I'm on his Ziggy Stardust album. And we all shipped off to America. So I left England for two years. That was after Superstar, but I had to have a knee operation first. Now I've got a new knee, which is fantastic. It's one of bring on old age. You just go, sod it, I'm gonna have a new knee. I love it. Bionic. Dana, do you know, the first time I met Danna, I've got to share with you, I love how you said to me, to help you remember, the pronunciation of it, it's danner, as in Spanish. Yes. Well, I don't understand why people can say dana. It's not spelt right. Americans don't know how to spell, obviously. And dana, there's no R there. So it's dan with a at the end. So Dana, as in Spanner. Just take us back to that time, you know, working with David Bowie. Bowie. Bowie, sorry, David Bowie, yes. Dan is obviously top on pronunciation here today. So fantastic. You were backing singer on his album, then he on yours. What was that era like? What was the whole period like to be part of? Well, it was fantastic because of course I grew up in the early 60s in the music business. And I've got to say David was amazing. He really helped me. He showed me the first ever chords on my Spanish guitar with my nylon strings, which is what every kid starts on before you can afford an electric guitar and everything. And he guided me on what? To how to listen to bass lines and things. I mean, when he'd had his first single out, he took me into the little booth and listened. The scene was fabulous in London and it meant that I could go to the Marquee Club and listen to all the great musicians who are now huge stars. You got your Jimmy Page, who actually did produce my some tracks on my first LP for Decca, that was 1965. But there was Clapton and the who and all these guys. I just kind of grew up around them. They were just musicians and guys having a very good time. And I don't think anybody really thought about going to America because somehow in those days America was so far away that you never thought this is your goal. I think people in those days went into the music business because they loved music, not because they're out to make money. And that might be a difference to how polluted our world has become now. It's so true in terms of the whole music scene. It must have been so, so different then. Well, talking about music, you've made a choice of three pieces for us. So let's have a look at the first piece you've picked for us today. What's it called? Love the Love. Love the Love. Well, this is quite Indian Y based and it's actually from an Indian melody. And it's to remind us all that we're on this planet. But we're screwing up this planet. Especially throwing plastic away. I've been campaigning against this for years. Nobody listen. I know Anti Plastic is very in at the moment, but we should respect everything. Every part of the earth that we walk upon. And the whole earth is breathing and seething love. So we should love this love. And that's why it's called love. Gorgeous. We love that Dana. My guest today is the wonderful songwriter, singer, actress, Dana Gillespie. Dana, we just heard before the break, love the love, Love the love. Because I just kind of feel it's important that people forget about love and you step out onto the street in London and people are shouting, they're aggressive, the cars are honking at you, you know, because it's quite a tough world out there and we have to be reminded of love. I think that's so true. And one of the reasons that the Universal Soul Company or the Universal Soul show is there, which you picked up on, is the universality of being human and how we share the experience and hopefully extend more compassion because of that. Well, I feel I actually I'm very pleased that you've called your show this because, you know, I travel a lot around the world when I'm in India, a Lot that's got another. That's very important part of my life. But the more I travel, the more I actually see that we are all the same. Did. Did Shylock in Shakespeare not say, if you cut us, do we not bl. We are all the same, and we all have the same soul. And if people could see that we're all the same, then they wouldn't fight each other. Because if you fought somebody else, then it's like fighting your brother. And if we take our life down to the very simple thing of quantum physics, we are all just matter and energy. So we are. You and I are the same. We're all the same. We're all one. And I try and get this message in my songs. I think it's beautiful. And as you say. So that is one of your second things that feed your soul, the songwriting. More than that also. I know you've written an incredible number of books, Dana. Well, no, it's. Well, it's. Songs really is my. Is my thing. I've always loved writing songs. And I respond much better when there's music there. Years ago, I auditioned for Sir Peter hall at the National Theatre for the Tempest. And I was absolutely hopeless because he put the Tempest in front of me, said, read this. I was alone on the stage. I was awful. And I said to him, that wasn't very good. And he said, no, it wasn't very good. And he gave the book back to me. He said, now sing the same bit. And I sang it, and I was totally brilliant. And I got the part because I sang it. How wonderful. So music responds. I respond to music. So, no books I haven't written. I have written one book of quotations called Mirrors of Love, which is quite Sufi. Books. That must be the book you gave to me. That's right. With a lot of artwork by Joerg Huber, an Austrian. But I have just written my memoirs. Now I've got to go out. And the awful bit of trying to find a publisher because, you know, I've done so many things in my life. It's gonna be a great big fat tome. And who most people can't even read these days. Well, I know an awful lot of people have shown interest in it. I mean, the kind of stories you have, the kind of period that you've covered, the people that you've worked with. Presenters@womensradiostation.com but the trouble is, most people today Tend to want all the scandal and sleaze and of course, I've got loads of, of what I call horizontal stories, but they're not uppermost in my mind. They happen to be in my history, which has been quite colorful and peppered. But, you know, when you get older, you move on to other things. There's no point in being. Nothing is more embarrassing than being stuck in the same rut and chase the same things or the same live the same way that you did 30 or 40 years ago. And I suppose it's that curiosity that keeps life fresh, that keeps you, I mean, and, and literally you travel all over the world. I mean, we happen to be neighbors down there, don't we? And I've never seen somebody with so many kind of jet set leavings early in the morning, taxis arriving off to another country. Yeah, well, I, you know, it's the life of a musician. I didn't realize how global it was going to be for me in the last few years. But, you know, that brings me slightly onto, you know, on the list of five things that touch my soul, one of them is Sai Baba. And for those that don't know if they're listening in, he's not physically on the planet anymore, but he was my spiritual teacher, my master, you could say. And I think in life a lot of people need help. And I mean, I was actually born Church of England, but I kind of, I suppose I fell by the wayside and I wasn't really looking for anything. But I do know that the moment about 40 years ago, I read a book on Sai Baba, I knew that this was a form that I could learn from him. So I kept going to India. And so now I go to a lot of countries and talk and sing. Maybe not about him, but about things that I've learned because of him. That is universal love for the planet and for everyone. And putting into music. That doesn't mean to say that I'm sitting around being all holy, holy. I mean, I'm a blues singer. I'm out in places where the audience might be as high as kites and stoned and. Or drunk, mostly drunk these days because they can't smoke inside a club. But I mean, my job on this planet is to bring light and uplift people in dark places in whatever form it may take. So it was Sai Baba that opened the door to myself. That's wonderful. And I think, Dana, in a way that's perhaps what all of us are seeking to find our purpose of how we do bring this very unique Light as human beings to the world in whatever form. It's interesting just to touch on spirituality for a moment because my interest in spirituality has always been not the sort of flight to the mystic where you have to spend the rest of your life levitating or trying to and meditating, but actually how you integrate it into real practical life. When somebody is, you know, showing road rage at you, or you're having a fight, or you can't get the front of the queue or you're feeling very stressed, how would you say something like Sai Baba and you know, the Indian teachings. How would you say you practically integrate that? Well, for me, I always loved India, so that made it easy. Especially in the 60s. People like myself and Jimmy Page, we'd always go and see any Indian musician who would be playing in London, which was quite rare. It was quite rare to even get a stick of incense in the early 60s. So I mean I was very happy to go once or twice a year for many years onto the ashram of Sai Baba. Now this is not for everybody, you know, it's no drinking, no smoking, no meat eating. For how long, Danna? Well, I used to go for a couple of weeks. Did you see the concern in my face? Well, I was asked to go and perform for his 70th birthday, which must be about over 20 years ago now with my. I was told he wanted my blues band. And I said to my musicians, do you want to come to an ashram where a. You won't get paid, you can't drink, smoke or eat meat. And quite rightly there was was not a great stampede of people coming with me. I did find a blues, but. But then I got to sing in front of nearly a million people. You have never seen such a huge sea of humanity. So I would go there, but I realized that in fact I'm not the type that's just going to sit cross legged and being holy and pray. I prefer to be out there hands on. And I think one should put his message of love or whoever your. Your goal is that you follow, be it Jesus, Krishna, whatever, Allah, you bring it and put it into daily life. Absolutely. And the less divide there is between who any of these entities are because I've started seeing them all pretty much as one. I don't mind what you want to call it, hence the universal soul. As long as it makes you feel good. You can flip out your front door a slightly better person, a bit more generous and compassionate towards others. It's doing a great job. Dana, we're going to Go onto your second choice of music today. So. So we're looking at Move your body close to Me. How did that come about? Well, I wrote that having. I was singing years ago in Dubai and I heard an old Arab guy who was slumped. I mean, this is not when Dubai was trendy. I mean, this must be over 40 years ago. And he was just playing an old cassette, and I screeched to a halt. He was in the sands, desert sands. And I said, I love that song. Can I have it? And can I buy it from you? And I only heard it once, maybe twice. He played it one more time. I bought it. It was an old copy of a copy of a copy. And typically Indian music cassettes fell to pieces within two seconds. So I wrote what. Because it broke the moment I got it home. I wrote the song, I suppose about 1980, and it went to number one across Europe in 1983. I couldn't get anybody in England interested to release it, but it has proved itself. It's been a hit and women seem to like this a lot. I have to say I heard it sung firsthand at the 606 sometime back in Chelsea. Absolutely gorgeous. Move youe Body Close To Me by Dana Gillespie. Will give in. Dana, we were just saying the the song we heard there back before the break. Move your body close to me. If anybody doesn't know how to meditate and they just want to, almost by putting that on you feel like you're meditating. Well, yes, but actually I think meditation doesn't have to be, as I said, sitting cross legged on the floor, one should be thinking of lofty thoughts all day long. Even if you're in a supermarket or chopping vegetables or something. That for me is meditating is actually kind of life. Very few people are able to actually sit and go off in total silence. I mean, and even if you're sitting in silence, your mind might be buzzing with things going through it. So I like to I've made about 10 albums in Sanskrit which might be slightly more meditational for people because then they won't understand the wor I understand what I'm singing about but they don't have to. Indians will understand a lot. But it's, it's important to just make people feel good. I think you're absolutely right. That's definitely what it does. And obviously these five things that feed our soul are the things that really make us feel good. Now I have to bring you your fifth choice is what I really share with you. We love it. It's chocolate. So my problem is one bag a day. Yeah, one bag a day. Thank you, Dana. That's it. Where did the love of chocolate, has it always been there? It's always been there. Even as a child. I mean, you know, of course, when I was, you know, the 50s, chocolate was pretty basic. My all time favorite is violet creams, a really old fashioned confectionery. I'm told the Queen Mother, it was her favorite too. And strangely enough, Julian, Clary's partner, is also violet creams. And when you meet somebody that has this passion for violet creams, you are bonded for life. I have to say, I said in the chocolate shop, in the Belgian chocolate shop this morning, excuse me, do you have any violet creams? They looked at me like, absolutely English. It's English through and through. Well, I just know that, you know, when I was a kid and I'd come home from school, my mother was a physiotherapist and she'd be out and my father was a radiologist and he'd be out and I do my homework in about three minutes. And then I'd be listening to music. But I'd be comforted. They would. Or my mother would leave me a piece of chocolate. So it's always been comfort food for me. But I once gave it up for five years thinking I'd just do it for, you know, one year or something. And I went to five years thinking I'm cured, I don't need it anymore. I had one piece. I'm like an alcoholic. Within a month I was back having some every day. It's back in your life, Dana. We're pleased. It is. Listen, you're incredibly busy. You're off around the world all the time if people want to hear you. So we're talking, you know, the second week of May onwards. Any opportunities to hear you. Oh, well, I'm June.
