Delighted to have you here, Maysoon. Thanks so much for coming in today. Thank you, Sarah. I'm very happy to be here. Fantastic. Now, really excited to talk to you about your new film that you're going to be directing later this year, another day in Baghdad. But first of all, just a little bit of background about you. So you're born in Iraq, you now live in the uk, but I know that you spent your childhood in many different countries. Do you feel that through really affected your kind of sense of the world, your sense of work? Absolutely, it has, yes. I've always found myself as a child, I found myself in situations where I was trying to make sense of a new place I was in and living in one place, always having the sense of another place or other places. And so it made me feel from a time that I was very young, I think that the world was a very large place and that there was also a connection. Things were different, but there was a connection between things, was a similarity. And you know, that's interesting because in your first of the five things that feed your soul, I noticed that you chose rivers and bridges. And I wanted to ask you, were they literally rivers and bridges that you Remember, from places. Or was it more metaphorically the connectivity of them between people and places? Both. It's both. I mean, I lived in Washington, D.C. that's got a river and many bridges. I lived in Baghdad. Very important river in bridges. And I live in London now. And river is in the middle of cities. I've always. I'm an urban person. I've always lived in relatively large cities. And the river is always a place of kind of solace and freedom and openness in the middle of the city. I love the hubbub, the human hubbub of a city. And I also love the space around the river, which is. Offers a. Obviously, also, there's quite a lot of hubbub around a river in a major city. And bridges have always been very important to me. I used to. When I lived in New York, when we lived in New York, we lived near the east river in Manhattan. And I could see the Triborough Bridge, which is a suspension bridge across the river. And I had a favorite place behind the sofa in the living room where I could look out at this bridge. And it's. I don't know. I don't know. It's very hard for me to tell you why I love bridges so much, but I do, partly when I'm trying to decide. When I was trying to decide who I am and where I belong and all this sort of thing, I finally thought, well, I'm a person who lives on a bridge, and a bridge is a place to be, because from a bridge you can see both sides of the river. And maybe you can tell these people about those people on the other side of the river and these people about those people on the other side of the river. And so that's kind of. That's. That's really what it is about bridges. And I love water in the middle of a city. I think that's beautiful, Maysoon. And also it's interesting how I think that really translates into this new project, the film you're about to direct, because Another Day in Baghdad we're really talking about. I felt, when I read the script, anyway, I felt you were giving us the opportunity to see a perspective on events from a different place. So, again, bridging between two places, just tell us a little bit about the project. It's a fiction feature film. It's an ensemble film of intersecting stories that kind of unfold over a period of seven days. The period that the film is set in is the last week of 2006. And during that time, there was intense sectarian violence and there were curfews every night in Baghdad. And it was in this sort of situation that people had to try to make their lives. And I was interested not in the destruction and the blood on the streets and all the rest of it, of which there was a lot at that point, but about how people actually were transforming this situation in their lives and being able to carry on not just surviving, but actually finding a way of creatively resisting this damage. And, you know, that takes us really to your second five things that feed your soul. You talked about the juxtapositions in life and of course, this can be applied, I'm sure, to many different areas, but in particular because we've just mentioned the film, the complexity of everyday life for real people, whatever that means continuing in Iraq, set against the backdrop of this extraordinary warfare. So that's something we're going to talk about a little bit more. It takes us to your first choice of music as well, which is Iraqi music. So one of the most famous musicians in the Middle East, I believe in the 20th century, Munia Bashir. So we're going to hear actually a piece called Art of the Oud, so a specialist instrument to Iraq. We just introduced this film that you're going to be shooting later this year. We've just had a really hugely successful fundraising event at the Royal Court Theatre. Really interesting to watch. People's desire to really get behind this film, to really make the difference of literally making it able to be made and happen. I mean, you're pretty much funded. There's just a short amount left. I've never been to Iraq, but it transports you somewhere really very specific in terms of your engagement with Iraq over the years and the kind of relevance you feel it has at this moment in time. The story you're trying to tell for people here in the West. Well, my engagement with Iraq, actually, it really was galvanized by the first Gulf War, when I, like all the other Iraqis in London at the time, watched television 24 hours a day and could see smart bombs falling on seemingly nobody in Iraq, because there was a kind of erasure that was going on that you never saw one ordinary Iraqi person on screen. Almost depersonalized, completely depersonalized. It was like a video game. The whole thing was like a video game. And it was really shocking and it was really traumatizing, actually, for me and many other Iraqis, because for us, the people there existed were unable to speak in English for some time, I believe, through this. Well, yes, I didn't completely lose my grasp on English, but I started to forget really ordinary words like window and table and salt, things like that. And at one point I forgot somebody asked me my name and I couldn't remember. Was just really a traumatizing business. And then, so as A result of that, what I did is I made a film about documentary film which was shown on Channel 4 about Iraqi women in exile, sort of reconstructing the history of the modern state through their experiences. So it included lots of people from different religions and different political outlooks and ages and so forth and coming from different parts of the country. And I kind of reconstituted what had been shattered in real life. Somehow it felt to me. So that's when I began to think, yeah, well, this is a kind of resistance to damage in terms of now that erasure has stayed with me. And you know, now when you see any footage of Iraq, it's usually about, you know, ISIS or terrorists, quote unquote, or victims in the aftermath of an explosion. There's, you know, smoke and fire and blood on the streets and there's a woman crying and hitting her head. You don't know anything about them. It's completely abstract. You're either a terrorist or you're a victim. End of story. What I love about this script that you've put together, this award winning script, I might say won an award at a festival in Dubai. I know it was awarded to you by Cate Blanchette. I believe the script really draws us into the intimacies of day to day life, which we can relate to. It doesn't really matter. And you know, just the show called the Universal Soul show, it almost doesn't matter whether you're in London, whether you're in England, whether you're in Hungary, whether you're in China. Just the humanity. So just tell us a little bit about the story and why you hope or why you think it's important that this film is made. It's precisely what you're saying. We're talking about people's daily lives, not just. It's not actually what goes on on the streets in terms of the blood or the killing or whatever that's important. It's actually what people do with that. And it's so it's a film made out of individual stories which, as I say, unfold over this period. And they're intersecting stories and each, each story has its own trajectory. At the same time, it's a story about a collective experience. And it's because the outside circumstances are so strong, they impact on everybody's life. So in a sense they hold everybody together. But meanwhile, everybody has their individual issues and it's very. And that is what people can relate to. I think people, somebody sitting in, you know, Shepherd's Bush here, for example, can look at that can think. Oh yes, I can. You know, I've done that. You know, I've had this row with my child. I've done this, I've done that. And we find it difficult enough when there isn't warfare going on out in the streets. So I think perhaps it's timely, it's important that this film is made also. You know, you've always been a great champion of the voice of women, which obviously is very in line with the women's radio station at a time when perhaps decisions about warfare and military action are possibly. I mean, I'm couching this in lots of possiblys and maybes, but predominantly made by men. Perhaps the divine feminine, the female dynamic coming through. You've co written this with an Iraqi writer, I believe. Yes, with an Iraqi writer who's actually a sort of novelist and short story writer and journalist. And she lives in Baghdad and has never left. How is life there now in Baghdad? It's quieter. There's checkpoints still everywhere. Everything is broken in a sense, except for the spirit of young people there who are sort of fed up with the situation and looking for change and trying to make things happen. There is an energy there, a creative energy that's going on. And I know you've supported, you've been a great support. You set up a film school that does actually support young people in learning about film. Yes. With a colleague who is also an Iraqi director living in London, we set up a free of charge film training center. Calling it a film school is a bit, you know, grand, but that's what we had those aspirations. You can be grand about those kind of aspirations. May seem. We'll let you have that. Well, we had those kind of aspirations, but actually we were going to bring people in and all this sort of. Anyway, the security situation didn't allow it, but it was. The students produced about 20 short documentary films over the period of the school that the school was open. They showed at festivals and some were. Are awarded prizes. I think more like 14 were awarded prizes. You know, we've got that sense from you of wanting change, of being very part of demanding change through the kind of work and the film work and this particular film that you're making. Why would you just say briefly, anyone listening around the world, why would you hope they might feel, however big or small, they could help be part of making this film? Start shooting in the autumn. I think this is the big untold story actually of we hear about wars, we hear about the violence, we hear about, we don't hear about how people's lives actually unfold in that situation, how their daily lives, how they preserve a sense of daily life and continuity and so forth. And I think this is really important because it becomes a game, the war game becomes a game all around the world. And actually we've never been in my memory in such a, such a precarious time with such violence. And I think it's, you know, in the Middle east we're subject to really extraordinary militarized male violence like ISIS and so forth. So a woman's voice actually and women's take on things, the sustaining of life in the face of destruction. And you know, you say the war game and I think that's such a powerful two words or phrase because this isn't really about where the war is. This isn't really about who it's between. This isn't really about what the issues are or who it's affecting. It's affecting people, humanity the world over. That's what the Universal Soul show tries to talk about, who we are collectively as a people experiencing these particular days on earth together. So if anybody feels moved or they would like the opportunity to, to literally be part of funding the last little bit of this film, you'd really appreciate it. I guess I would enormously appreciate it. And I think that's. Sorry, I saw when you say appreciate it. And it is emotional, you know, it really is. I love actually your third piece of music, which we will come to shortly after we've talked about one of your last five things that feed your soul. When we get there is actually Gracias a la vida, Gratitude for the life. And the words in it are incredible. When we get there. I know something that is mentioned in there. This is by Verletta Para. She says the two elements that make up my song and your song as well, which is the same song, and everyone's song, which is my very song. So it's the fact we are all sharing this. The very last thing on your list, we had beautiful things that are made by people I've managed to just sort of put in there because we've talked about things, film. But I know you've also talked about it being architectural spaces, woven textiles, pottery, paintings, you know, anything around the world collectively created. But trees you talked about as being there, especially old ones. Tell us where trees fit in, Mehsun. Well, it's. I. I don't know. Why do I love trees? I don't know. I love palm trees. I mean, they're. They're between the houses. Because you're in the south of France. Round a pool? No, because I'm in Baghdad. Because they're very ancient palm trees, but between the houses. But I love all kinds of trees, actually. Why do I love them? I don't know. Because they're remarkable beings. And recently I've been going to Kew Gardens more often after a really long absence from it. And being in the presence of a tree that's 500 years old is a remarkable experience. It really puts you in the world. You're so right. There's a grace about them and there's a holding of what they've witnessed. Do you know, I remember once I was lucky enough to go to Jerusalem and stand in the garden of Gethsemane, so this urban garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives, and just witness these trees, these silent beings that held a kind of cellular knowing about what had gone on before. Exactly. I think, you know, all the people make fun about hugging a tree. It ain't a bad thing to do. Well, you know, Maysoon, we're going to finish with your last choice of song, which, as we said, is from Violeta Para Gracias a la Vida. So gratitude for The Life. It's an extraordinary song. Thanks to Life, which has given me so much. It gave me two stars which when I opened them perfectly distinguish black from white. When did you first find this song? I sort of been around for a while and I hadn't heard it when you asked me to sort of choose a piece of music. I hadn't actually listened to it in quite a while. And I first heard it not by Viola Taparab who wrote it, and I think there's an incredible version of it, but by Joan Baez a long time ago. Beautiful.
