Welcome to the Universal Soul Show. I'm Sarah Griffiths here with you for the next hour. Coming up, my guest artist, William Pounds. We're going to be finding out the five things that feeds his soul and listening to his favorite pieces of music too. But I'm delighted to say my guest for this week's show is topographical and perspective Artist. Easy for me to say. William Pounds. William, it's wonderful to have you here and it's lovely to be here and thank you for inviting me. Thank you. Absolute pleasure. William, do you know, I think so many people, when we hear the word artist, are you somebody that as a child knew you were good at art? You knew you were good at really? How did it start for you as a child? I've got some sketches from when I was 2 that my dad kept and they're not bad for a two year old. And it's interesting, I still am obsessed with the same things I was as a little boy. Do you know, that is interesting because I think for children, very early on I remember it was always something that people either said, oh, here, he's good at art, or she's not good at art. And you attach very quickly and very early to either being good at it or not. You educated me very quickly when I knew you were coming on the show because I had to look up topographical. So relating to the arrangement or accurate representation of the physical features of an area. I mean, is that what it really means? What did you think it means? What do you think you were doing? Generally, when you'd say a topographical image, you think about it as being an aerial view, right? So the point of view would be what used to be called a bird's eye or a hot air balloon view. But of course, today with drones and helicopters and Google Earth, our perspective of the whole world has changed. But in the 17th century, doing a view from an aeroplane before airplanes was really extraordinary. Yeah, of course. And I think actually what blew me away when I first saw your work was I don't think I'd ever seen before. It was like being in an aeroplane. I would look at an image that, that you showed me of, for example, one of the grand homes and gardens that you'd done. And I couldn't believe I had it on my phone. And as I zoomed in, there was simply more and more and more detail. I mean, how do you do that as an artist? Do you start close in and then add more on? I mean, as a child, again, I was always looking for the detail. In the Roman Fort, there's often a man spending a penny behind a tree. And, you know, those were the fun things. And so in my paintings, I put them in. And if we talk about the work that I'm doing now, I've just done a big painting where I've got the lady who's commissioned the house in her little boat on the river and somebody else has just left a few tennis balls on the tennis court and those are the things. And then for the family and the children, it's like find. Was it Find Willie? Oh, yes, I know that. Well, you had to find a character in a thousand characters. That's right. Which you could spend hours going into my paintings. And I've always been strangely obsessed with miniatures. Doll's houses, model villages. I have a slight perspective, like Gulliver's Travel of the World. How extraordinary. I mean, they really are magical. I would really urge people, if you want to go and have a look at what we're discussing for yourself. William's website, www.williampounds.com It's a real feast for the eyes now, the first thing that feeds your soul. Great architecture. I mean, you trained as an architectural historian before studying at School of Art. Had you ever imagined being an architect or was it always going to be a painter? Do you know, when I was in school, the careers officer said I should do architecture, but seven more years after A levels. Seven years when you're 17 is a long time. So I thought I'll go to university for three. And in the end I went on to art school and did five. So I should have done architecture. But actually I'm not that. That sort of mind. I just have a skill. I think I've worked out that my Skill is about 3D. I can think 3D. And you assume that other people think the same as you. But of course people look at me blankly and don't understand because I Do it just naturally. Do you know, I think that's such a good point. Sometimes we almost so take for granted our natural default skill set. And it's sometimes when we put that in relation to other human beings and we often talk about sharing the experience of being human, it's only then that you can compare and contrast almost what you're living. So, talking about great architecture, you currently have an exhibition that's been on over the summer. So the de Rothschilds, they opened their old dairy, did they not, and turned it into, I love this, an art gallery, the Palais de Vaches. Yeah. Such a wonderful space. Great name. Hey, and where is it? Will, the place is. I mean, I would recommend you go there with a picnic and just go for the location. It's where the Beaulieu river bends right around what was a Neolithic site to go up to Beaulieu and Buckler's hard. So it's very beautiful. It's in the middle of nature and it's just been inhabited for thousands of years. And you see across the salt marshes and the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Beautiful. Which in actual fact is one of the things that also feeds your soul, being close to nature, rivers and trees. So William's paintings are hanging there for the rest of the summer, but obviously you can see them online as well. So really worth checking that out. Well, William Pounds, artist is here with me. William, I love. Before the break we heard Chet Baker. Let's Get Lost. Where did that choice come from? Such a sexy song, isn't it? I mean, I wanted to choose something that we could all feel sexy to. And I love you. Use that one. Appreciate our age. My age. Oh, thanks for saying your age. Our age. We'll all share it. Look, this is the Universal Soul Show. We'll share in it. You used the word slinky in it too. I love slinky. It's nostalgic and yet somehow it's right up to date. And I have to confess, I'm not a great musician follower. And I learned about Chet Baker seeing that film, you know, Mr. Ripley? Oh yeah. And that turned me on to Chet Baker. So I was kind of ignorant of him and I ran out and bought the CDs and I've become a fan ever since. Do you play any instruments? Actually, no. I learned the clarinet and the minute I got a brace on my teeth, it was great excuse to give up. Isn't it interesting how Artistry shows up in so many different ways. We were talking about, you know, how very instinctively as a young child, if parents are out there or children thinking about art, you know, and you think, gosh, how do I get them involved? Buy them Lego painting, drawing bits. My mum and dad were very, very generous. Quite well off. They were lucky. We had an account in the local art shop. Oh, how interesting. And an account in the local bookshop. And they felt that was feeding us as children. And some said we were very spoiled. But, you know, that was an amazing thing to have, certainly in a day and age when so many people are, you know, there's so much technology and on the iPads and so forth. It's true. My little boy loves Lego. And also, yeah, all the tools for art, I think the paintbrushes, the pencils, they're so tactile, aren't they, in a way? The colors. I mean, it's so stunning. Why I particularly said Lego is because it's three dimensional. And I think there's a great. There's a great sense of training the mind to be three dimensional rather than one dimensional. And then, of course, we go five dimensional. That's when we go on to beyond. That's where we're going. Well, let's move on to interesting. We were talking about the things that feed your soul. So obviously you've done these incredible, huge, vast paintings of houses and also gardens. Gardening is something very close to your heart. Where's your favorite garden? And what is about gardening such a difficult question? Because you can have a amazing garden in a desert. You can have an amazing pretentious garden with statues and fountains. In Italy, you could go to a natural garden which is, you know, I think that's one of those questions you can't answer, William. You know, it's interesting, though, because you have done these paintings that have shown in publications like Country Life and House and Garden Gardens Illustrated. Kew Gardens. Haven't you painted? Well, that was an exciting. Was that the whole of Kew Gardens? Yes, and it was a real surprise. Seriously. They rang me up and it was their millennium issue and they needed a large centerfold. And, you know, a lot of people can't read plans the minute it's 3D. So if a tree is a green circle, you don't recognize it. But if it's a mini, mini cedar tree, everyone knows it's a mini, mini cedar tree. So people can find their way. So commercially, I did a lot of guidebook sort of illustrations and I worked for a long time for A famous garden designer doing all of his presentation drawings. But I fell casualty to the computer. Most drawings are done by CAD now and I feel very like the agricultural workers who were put out of jobs by combine harvesters and, you know, I was put out of job by technology. Luckily I can paint in oil, so I'm now painting portraits of houses. It's interesting. I talked to John Stoddart, was one of my guests not long ago and he was talking about, you know, having been a photographer very much working with film and then digital coming along and how to of displaced. Do you not feel that there will be a kind of, you know, resurgence of value in the artist that's working naturally? Because, you know, that's something I'm going to talk about at the end of the show. It's. It's the inherent magic that comes through the spirit or the soul of a human being that is it possible for a CAD machine to emulate. So if someone says, please come and paint my house, what, what do you say? Give us a helicopter, go up in or give me some photographs. Can I spend the day with you, please? And march around with the camera. Yes. And sketch. And then now I will look at Google Earth because it's available, it is 2018 and then I will decide on. It's a bit like a photograph of a person. You have to have your favourite angle and of course with a house you can really only show two sides of it. Yes. And I haven't had a client yet who's commissioned me to do two paintings so they get all four sides of their house. But in the 17th century there are pairs of paintings like that. Oh, really? So that you'd see it from all angles. I fundamentally believe. And you know, I like technology, so I think there is a place for it and working with it, in some ways I think it's teaching us to be human again, to value our uniqueness. But as you say, you still work with technology or Google Earth to help you achieve. I use it, yes. But I noticed this week it's been talked about a lot that robots are going to replace the workforce and I'm kind of feeling secure in that. My skill is already something that's individual to me and I'll never design a robot that can do what I can do. So in a funny way I might become more and more of a asset. Being the optimist, I like to believe that in actual fact we perhaps will remember or refind our humanity through our unique spirit or soul ingredient that hopefully I can't Imagine they're ever going to be able to endow, whether it be your Alexas or your Ceres or your AI instruments with. But just let's look for a second. Ruins was something else that you mentioned. Archaeology. Yes. Which ties in with three dimensional stuff and it ties in with history and so much that I'm passionate about. There's another thing you should do. If you can take your child to Pompeii. Oh, I love that idea. It's got volcanoes, it's got destruction, it's got lost civilizations, it's got 2000 year old loaves of bread still in the ovens. The artists dropped their paint and they found their paintbrushes still after the volcano. So yes, I was taken there when I was eight. I've been back there half a dozen times. William Pounds, artist here with me. William, it's absolute pleasure having you here today. We're on to your last thing that feeds your soul. But I know there are many, many more things, of course, but your love of Australia, now where did that come from? Well, I ran away slightly madly after 9 11. I don't know if you remember the vibe in London. Everyone took their kids to the country or wherever if they could and there was this feeling that something was going to happen here and I was a bit paranoid and I was fed up with England anyway. And within a month I'd rented out my house and I was in Sydney. Gosh, had you been There before? No, no. I'd been up north on a diving holiday and I had always said I'd save up the cities of Australia for the future and then the opportunity arise. It was the moment, you know, sometimes the moment was just. Do you take, for example, when you travel, do you automatically take things in order to paint whilst you're away? Not at all, no. I went kind of not knowing what I was doing. I almost had an idea that I might even emigrate. Right. I sort of just was fearful of the world. That makes me sound a bit mad. But it was a remarkable thing to do and I ended up going for seven winters. I went at the end of our summer and came back after Easter. So sort of sometimes it was six months, sometimes it was four months. Gosh. And what did you find there? What kept drawing you back there? Byron Bay was the place that I landed up, which was a hippie hippie, but not quite a chic hippie. Get a really good Italian coffee on the beach. Absolutely. And it's a surfing community. Unfortunately, it was still hippie with interesting people, and now it's become a wealthier and wealthier place and the hippies have fled to the hills to great degree. You know, they built a motorway to Brisbane. Right. Did you paint while you were there? I did. What did you paint? I did. Well, I did a huge painting. Everybody in Byron walks to the lighthouse, which is on Cape Byron. Cape Byron is the most easterly point of Australia, so geographically really important. I have actually been there. Have you? Yeah. Ironically, I think I ate fish and chips at Byron Bay. Would that make sense? Yes, yes, something like that. I rented a flat from a divorced lady who's a bit older than me, who still surfs every morning, which was nice for her and nice for me. Did you surf while you were there? Well, I'm a good body surfer. I'm not very good at standing on a surfboard. But you're very good with the painting in the ocean every day. I painted that, the lighthouse and that particular coastline. What about Aboriginal art for you? Where does that sit? Aboriginal art? Well, I was introduced to the Aboriginal sacred stones called cherungas. Cherungas are given to the adolescent males when they go on their walkabout and they're their sacred object for the rest of their life and they're incised with spirals. And when the adolescent men go every year on their walkabout, they presumably take a hallucinogenic drink and then they hallucinate into their stones. They get stoned, if you like, literally. And communicate with the ancestors and they believe that it's the spirits of the ancestors that take care of you. So these are very powerful religious objects and very personal to individuals. And sadly, because so many were just lost because their owners died, white men didn't treat the Aboriginals well. They turn up and they really are magical objects. And what did you do with these paintings? I painted a series. I painted a series of them and then no one would touch them in Australia because most of the galleries are owned by white people and they're terrified of touching anything of the Aboriginal culture. So there's a sort of ownership of their culture. Tim, I remember you didn't know there was a chap called Patrick Corberley Sturton, and he had an Aboriginal art gallery on the same street that Legends used to be on. This is showing our past now, and I remember regularly going in there and enjoying the artwork. Could we see these paintings of yours anywhere now? There's one down at Exbury, but I've moved on from them, really. But they are extraordinary things. Very quickly, William, because we're coming towards the end of our time. It's gone so quickly. In terms of what you are currently painting, I mean, you accept commissions from people on all scales? I do. Funnily enough, the one I just completed this week I can talk about with more freedom, because it's not a commercial enterprise, because I was bought in a charity auction. So I offered my services and the Duchess of Norfolk bought me. Oh, wonderful. So it's always been. It's been a line that I've been bought by a daughter. Well, I mean, do I have to wear an apron and do the washing up with nothing? No, it's a painting of her house and I've just finished it and it's really, really lovely. And where can we sit? Can we see that on your website or is that just a private thing? You'll have to ask permission, William. Finally, we're going to end with your last choice of music. You know, when there's so much talk about the development of AI and all the Personas like Siri on iPhones and Alexa on Google, I find it's encouraging me to kind of remember what makes us unique as human beings and why those entities can never truly emulate us, what's really special. And I believe it's because as human beings, we do have this magical and intangible element to us called our spirit or our souls, which simply cannot be artificially replicated. So I think the challenge is to remember this and to find whatever our way is to connect with it so we don't just reduce ourselves to simply being a collection of skin and bones that only ages and then dies. And I think when we remember this unique element of ourselves, our soul or our spirit, we know that we're more than this and that that's simply an illusion that kind of preys on our mind a lot of the time. So I hope in the same way technology and social media reminds us of the value of direct and real communication. AI and Personas will maybe help us to find or remember our spirituality. And there's a little phrase I love that expresses this, this, and it's tell a caterpillar, it's really a butterfly and it'll never believe you. So there you go.
